Post by: Swimr2DaResQ on February 25, 2012, 11:29:40 PM
Hey guys,
My buddy is selling his '02 CR 250. He will sell it to me for pretty cheap. I just wanted some info on that model year before I bite.
Anything helps!
Thanks,
Chad

If it's still in stock form it's got the Mikuni carb that is a bit more finicky to temp and elevation changes so some guys will swap it out for a Keihin. The 3rd gen aluminum frame is pretty killer.

Frame and handling-wise, the 2002 and up are great.
Motor-wise, the 2001 CR250 has the best engine.

My kx250 just blew another crank bearing under 40 hrs on a complete top and bottom rebuild, The cylinder has to be stripped and replated. I was debating on fixing my kx or getting something else. The CR seems like a steal and it just got a new top end. It's in alot better overall shape than my '01 KX. I think I'll swap the Keihin carb from my KX to The CR. What else can be done to improve the Motor?
Thanks

I had a 2002 CR250, Best handling bike I have ever ridden. Wish I would not have sold it.
I did the PWK swap and it helped a little with the bottom end, made jetting alot easier.

the cr125 crankcases had too much volume. not the 250's i say get it. it has a few issues with the motor but its a much better quality bike than your kawi and they handle really well

Well, it's sitting in my garage now! looks pretty good, needs a couple minor things(chain, sprockets and some TLC!!). All in all its in great shape!
It has the V-Force 3 reed valve with a FMF Fatty Pipe and a turbine core 2 silencer. Brand new top end, with heat cycles completed. Suspension is decent, needs some tweaking , but the springs are right on for my weight. It needs a face lift, but that will have to wait! I'll post pics soon!
Thanks 8)

Here are a few pics of the bike! It's a work in progress, definitely not as clean and awesome as MxSkillz CR!

This is what it looked like when I picked it up.

This is where it's at currently, I have a lot more planned, just waiting on a few bucks to throw at it!

I had found an issue with the base gasket. So I replaced the gasket and added a little extra gasket sealant!

I found the base gasket was not replaced after the new top end was done, cylinder was not even torqued to spec, and the mating surfaces between the cases and cylinder had residue and parts of old gaskets on them. It would make a kind squeaking/ plunging sound when you kicked it over, it was sucking air through the space between the cylinder and case into the crank case! I took it all apart and the surfaces mate good, but with so much extra crap between the surfaces and not being torqued to spec, it's no wonder why it wasn't sealing properly! One of the previous owners must have jammed a crow bar or similar tool between the cylinder and case to pry it off, What a jackA##! It really freaked me out at first, but it's all good now.

Good choice going back to the red plastic, I don't know why so many Honda owners go with all black, must be a Metal Mulisha wanna-be thing...

Started tuning the carb today, got a ways to go to get it spot on! This Mikuni carb is kind of a pain as well. Gonna swap it out with a keihin carb from JD. The previous owners had the jetting all jacked up. She'll be running smooth as butter by the weekend! 8)

I would love to try a 2002 and 2001 back to back. I know people say the 2001 has the best engine and the 2002 is not as good. But it may be just personal opinion. I don't care about the peakiest powerband, and from the sounds of it, the 2002 has as much power, just with a fatter spread.

Ran into another issue today, the carb has been giving me hell trying to get it dialed in, or so I thought! The bike idles great, and will run on the stand all day long and revs to the moon. It's getting plenty of fuel and air, it's still not dialed in to where it should be but it's good enough to start plug chops. Rode it around the yard for a bit and never really cracked it open(yard is not big enough for that), so after she is all warmed up and seems to be breathing fire again I head out on the street to open it up and wind through the gears. First is somewhat smooth and the power winds up quick, shift into second and crack it open again, it winds up strong until about halfway through the powerband and starts to die off like its not getting fuel, I let off the gas and pull in the clutch, it idles really high then starts to jump up in rpm's, let the clutch out a little and brings the idle back down, crack the throttle open and it sputters and dies. The carb is emaculate at this point every thing but the slide and body are new, and set to fmf jetting specs for an 02. I can sometimes run it through the gears up to 4th without opening the throttle all way. A buddy of mine that had a little pitbike with a fourstroke motor in it had a similar problem. His bike would die under load in the same manner that this cr250 is doing, put his bike on the stand and it runs great, idles and revs to it's limiter no problem. He went through every option, even replacing his carb. He heard a few guys on forums talk about possible electrical issues, so he chased the electrical system starting at the plug all the way back to the stator/alternator. He replaced everything through that system and found the problem was the alternator/stator. When the bike was not under load it performed as expected, under load and on the go the stator could not provide a strong enough spark to combust the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder. So, I am wondering if anyone has ever had issues with this sort of problem on their 2strokes and am I way off in assuming this to be a problem or possibly on the right track!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
thanks,
Chad

unplug kill switch and take it for a ride.
Fastest cheapest check for random dying. It has happened to me. Chased things for weeks and got scared to do jumps on it. new switch and all good.

One of my mates used to have a 2005 cr250 that ran good on the stand and ran good on tick over but would almost die if you revved it and he found it to be the powervalve as the previous owner had took it out an put it back in upside down. After he fixed it he had to sell it because it had too much power for him.  :o
