I was thinking this morning now that I am injured and cannot ride I should try and stay fit.
I thought an exercycle might be the way to go to build up my leg muscles.
Then I remembered my last ride and what 1 guy was doing for exercise.
What do you guys think ? Should I get 1 of these.

Any form of biking, if you only want to focus on your legs try a road bike or fixed gear.
-
Oh that machine does build leg muscle but unfortunately it teaches you poor habits :(
-
I have three MTBs and a Paramount road bike as well. They are OK but not even close to as much fun as a good BMX cruiser! There is nothing as good for practicing good MX habits as riding a BMX bike. I love thrashing a good soft berm with my Quadangle. It is as much fun as a thrashing berms on a motorcycle.
-
Biking's fun but best way to build muscle and strength is lifting weights. Back squats to be exact, for your legs.
-
Okay, I have never been to a gym in my life yet I can leg press 1000lbs+. All from biking. ;D On my fixed gear I run 52t 16t gear ratio, and my friend was running 52t 13t before he spun the cog on the hub.
-
LOL had to use this. Funny
-
I swear by my mountain bike.A 5k ride per night time permitting made me able to stand almost indefinitely.Maybe not outright strength but it seems to suit the riding muscles. My loop is both up and down hills of various size.A stationary bike would help but it's sooooooo boring.

I think some of you have missed the point of my post. ;)
It was a piss take.
Look at the vid again. Kick Kick Kick Kick.

How do you know you can leg press that much if you've never been to a gym, and i can guarantee you that if you put the same time and effort into weight training as you do to riding your bike you'd be even stronger.
I'm not knocking cycling at all it's great excercise but if your goal is to build leg muscles then there's no faster way to do it than correct weight training

haha no worries, I got it

My friend had a small work out station(wouldn't call it a gym) in his garage, and all I did was simply checked how much I could press. Sorry tmkiwi for semi-hijacking your thread.

A small workout station and you managed to get 1000lb on there?
Most home gyms top out at about 300lbs!
1000lb on a proper 45 degree leg press going to full extension is no easy feat, certainly something people would want to see from a guy who never trains.
-
you know what, fine with me. ;D

Lol,I didn't watch it at all until a couple days later. My daughter was downloading from itunes on her ipod which, with our wireless router, then makes our main computer too slow for videos.Having seen it now,I realized NZ-ers must be a kinder, gentler race as compared to the guys around here.To stall on a hill here makes you fair game and you are automatically kicked over by the first person on the way by-not that I'd ever do such a thing myself ::) :D
-
LOL @ the guy crapping himself.

WORLD RECORD Ryan Kennelly benches 1070 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfYuz80hRRU#)

Legit. The most I have ever benched was 200lbs at age 16, and I know for a fact I can do more but whats the point when your building the wrong type of muscle(Look how big the guy is!). My point of stating that "Biking is better for leg muscle", is because it is a low impact exorcise, and you won't destroy you knees in the process. Hell, I'd rather be that guy in the video kicking the shit out of 4 stroke than do squats, leg presses, etc.. I'll try to get you a foot press video, depending if I can use the college gym, and if I have time.

Never trains? I bike 12-20 miles everyday, on a fixed gear, which means non-stop pedaling, and no brakes which means I stop by back pedaling. Why don't you try riding one for a day and come back and tell me its easy :o My thighs are wider than my head...LOL

A perfect hour glass eh ;)

X2. Bicycling is great for the muscles you use while riding.Bench pressing would be good if the bike landed on top of you and you had to throw it off with your legs-otherwise,short duration, high strength isn't what you're after.
-
ford I don't think you fully understand weight training if you think it is all for high strength & short duration. I used to lift heavy, really heavy. It's how I blew my back out both times (the second time I was shrugging over 700lbs). Now I just lift with light dumbbells. Light weight, high rep work outs. It promotes lean muscle gain, builds endurance, and helps burn fat.
-
I jumped on the bike (bicycle) last night... holy crap am I out of shape I wan't down the road a mile before I was making fun of myself for being so far out of shape... theres nothing like a good workout on a bicycle... I need to start riding it every night. With my job, I have limited time to ride my KTM, so I need to be in decent enough shape to take advantage when time permits... I'll be on the bicycle trying to get some much need strength back in my legs, arse, etc.
By the way good video

I know i'm late on this thread, but the best way to build your leg muscles is to ride standing. I know that alot of us can't ride as much as we'd like, but when you do, STAND UP.
When I train, I ride two or three days a week, riding as close to 60 miles as I can, and stand as much as physically possible. The first week is pure Hell, cramps, seemingly endless deep muscle soreness, but after a couple of weeks the cramps will subside(some) and the soreness won't be so bad.
I will also ride my mountain bike a couple of miles in the morning. My knees are too shot out to jog.
Bicycling is great for cardio and stamina, but riding standing conditions the muscles you use riding.
-
I think that the hack is the best way to build up your legs. Just try to ride one with a 200lbs. monkey. It is like doing 400lbs. leg presses for three hours. I weigh 200lbs. and my monkey does as well. We ride about 15 miles at a time a couple times a week. Our regular ride is about 30 miles on our BMX bikes. We ride 15 miles and then hit the jumps all day, then we ride 15 miles back home. We spend most of the time standing. It is nearly impossible to ride a BMX bike while sitting. You can't climb any hills, hit any jumps or thrash any berms while you are sitting. We really only sit while we are chasing the road bikers. Our average speed on the pavement is about 18 mph on bikes with only 55 gear inches. It's all about spinning!
