Title: New guy here
Post by: mxjordan369 on March 03, 2011, 05:16:27 PM
First I would like to say that this is an amazing website/forum :) I finally decided to join after looking for a few weeks. I am new to the two stroke community but not new to motocross, I am just now coming off a 2 year break i took to recover over some injuries and for college. Now I am in my last year in college and I decided to buy another mx bike and before i quit i rode a 08 kawasaki kx250f, but I didnt want another 4 stroke again main reason being the maintenance cost, so I bought a 06 kx250 and I LOVE IT!! i should have made the switch a long time ago :) I have included a picture of my bike with a few things i have added.

Welcome to the site, I must commend you on your bike choice :D, I own an 07 and based my decision to buy it on my buddies 06.
The only difference between the two are the size of the squish band (head dome volume) kawasaki gave the 07 head just a little more volume to try to tame the beast
here are a couple of recommendations for your bike to smooth out that violent mid range hit and improve power over the whole range
install the optional, lower compression base gasket
Vforce 3 reed block
9 or 11 oz flywheel weight
and depending on where you are, lean out the pilot jet one size from stock
one tooth bigger rear sprocket
those four things alone will give your motor an electric smooth power curve

I have also added a FMF gnarly pipe and Turbine core2 silencer, but I ride woods
The Fatty in conjunction with the powerccore2 is a great pipe for moto

I love having a turbinecoreII on my 125 for racing. Provides more low end grunt (or should I say, it gives the bike a little lower end grunt.. because it stock it has virtually none)

So the turbinecore 2 is actually good for mx? If that's the case I have a brand new one I can put on :)

Welcome

Congrats on picking up your KX, reminds me of my cousins kx100 when I was a kid, all I remember is loudness and green as I'm sure your bike is! 8)

Sounds like in the US you guys are really sick of the four stroke costs, don't blame you.

well it is green and loud  ;D haha and yes four stroke costs are outrageous and these bikes are so much more fun to ride :)

KX250 has great potential.

Dude, if you already have a TC2, PUT IT ON!!!!  8) I was assuming you didn;t have anything yet and gonna just moto. My bad. The TC2 works great with the stock pipe, I noticed my bike pulled longer on top, but didn't notice anything down low, it's also quieter then the stocker and won't burn down any forests.

yeah it came with the bike brand new, and after i get my suspension back im gonna put it on there and try it out. i figured my suspension was the first thing on my to do list

Most definitely, I had some success with the clickers, but still couldn't get it to settle into turns, or get rid of the top stroke harshness, got it revalved and it is sooooo much better, it's like a different bike altogether. I held off on the stiffer fork springs to see how the valving was compared to stock, the action now is super, but I need the extra resistance for my weight and oversized tank, I ordered the .49kg fork springs last night.

Thank you for all of your help. For my weight the front springs are good I'm just getting them revalved and also getting a new spring for the rear and getting the shock revalved. I was wanting to order a pro circuit linkage but they don't know when the company will even make some more for the two strokes.

I set my race sag at 95mm it lowers the seat height and lays back the rake with you on board, fixing the stinkbug problem, I told my suspension guy this before I had him revalve it to compensate the valving for the 10 mm of displaced stoke action. Call your guy now!! Hopefully he hasn't put your shock back together.
Another tip on the fork height is to lower the forktubes flush with the top clamp, just the caps should be sticking out. And get those quick air bleeders, these forks build air pressure like crazy.

I haven't taken my suspension to the guy yet Its just off of my bike. And thanks I will be sure to tell him that. In sure he will know what I'm talking about because he has  a 07 kx250

yep, When I told my guy where I set the sag and why, he was blown away, not only that I knew I could adjust the rake by adjusting the preload on the spring, but that I knew that it affected the valving as well.  my shock is so f'n good now I'd swear it was an A kit KYB. Come on fork springs!!!

When you slid the forks down in the clamps did it affect handling alot?
Title: Re: New guy here
Post by: MyckMcClung on March 06, 2011, 06:02:19 AM
Yes,  that was the first thing I did to my bike, adjustment wise, the actual first thing was greasing the swingarm linkage, every greasable bearing and pivot, anti siezing all the fasterners, and replacing the horrible Bridgestones w/ dunlop 756. I rode my buddies 06, before I bought mine, and he had his set up stock with like a 1/2 inch sticking out, it twitched terribly at speed, and would not take a sweeper for anything.
Dropping the forks made a big difference in stability, and cornering, but it wasn't enough for me, the extra 10mm of sag (95mm) was the ticket.(recommended sag is 105mm) I experimented w/ 5mm, 7mm, & 12mm as well. 12mm made the turning to slow for tight eastern trails I ride, 5 & 7mm was still a little twitchy wide open.
I also use alot of rebound dampening, 5 out from seated with the valving  have now, it allows the the bike to settle into turns, complements the sag setting, by laying the rake back, and the whole pogo stick feeling it had stock it gone completely.
Are you having it valved for MX or offroad?

I also have a 2006 kx250.  The only problem is im not very educated on suspension so i really do not know how to set the bike up to help the high back end. Ive set my race sag but im not sure if im really doing it right.  Also i dont have enough money to get my the suspenion revalved or anything like that.  Any tips on setting the race sag would be great.

http://www.factoryconnection.com/index2.htm (http://www.factoryconnection.com/index2.htm)

here's a quick guide on setting you sag, and how fork height affects handling.
I must apologize for a mistake I made previously about my race sag setting,
it is not 95mm it is 115mm
I had it backwards. When I set it up new I set it at 105mm by recommendation of a magaizine article, but I added 10mm of sag, in other words I took preload off the spring to lower the seat hieght, I was thinking the number came from the axel up, but it it from the fully extended position down to where it sits with you on it, duh, ::)
the number comes from the distance from the length from the axel to the junction where your side panel and rear fender meet with the bike on the stand
then you measure the same points with you on it in full gear, take that number and subtract it from the first number
this will give you your setting if the number you get is lower than 115, you have too much preload on the spring, break the lock nut free and turn the other one counter clockwise to take some preload off until you get to 115mm
if the number is higher add preload till you get to 115mm

The procurcuit link is 3mm longer than the stock link.

If you can get him to make it, I want one too.

Thanks for the tips. Do you have to do anything to the clickers before you set the race sag.

Thanks for that link I will make sure to tell him that and see if he can get one made :)

no clicker settings necessary
Let me know how much he wants to make it, maybe we could throw in to make several and sell them to other KX owners on the forum for cost + shipping, there are a bunch on here.

Sweet ride I'm on a 2007 kx250...i love that thing, I tamed her down a bit with a PC Plat2 pipe and a 13 ounce counter weight(spreads out the power a bit) .. :P

I love these bikes :) and i plan to eventually put a works pipe on there, even though it will require a lot of maintenance i don't mind doing it for that works look

you can clear powder coat the works pipe and no one will ever know
