Title: Hello all, new here!
Post by: Sideways17 on February 16, 2011, 05:44:39 PM
Hello ladies and gents,
i found this forum today and have been reading the posts here. Seems like my kind of people! I have a 2003 RM250. I recently thought about selling it and moving on to a 4t but I cant seem to buy a bike that I cant do a topend on. The RM is, however, getting a little old and it has its problems (I asked in the tech section today on what someone thought might be the issue) so Im still thinking about getting a new bike. Ive heard the 2005-2008 RM's are better than the 03 version I have and Ive also read alot of good things about the YZ. Im not sure...

Im currently healing from surgery I had 2 weeks ago. Last June I highsided and crushed my left collarbone. 6 months went by, it never healed so the Dr. went in a plated it with 9 screws total! Ive been spending my off time researching bike, reading everything I can about suspension setup and trying to figure out what bike to buy next!

Glad I found this site!

Here is my RM:

Thanks! I've been doing some reading, the 2006 RM250 sounds like its the best RM that was released. Is the 06 the same bike as the 07 and 08?

I think the 06/07/08 are all the same.
Sure someone here can confirm.

Off the top of my head I think Suzuki made some slight porting changes to soften the hard low end hit in the 07-08 models.  Not sure on that though.

Welcome to the forum, nice RM!  :)

Welcome, sorry about the crash. I don't know why you would want anything else other than an RM250. They have the best suspension, cornering, and IMO look better than the YZ (although the front fender could go down a little farther in the front - nitpicky though). Depending on your weight, you might think about a KTM 150.

Welcome to the site sideways, that's a nice bike, Honestly the newer models aren't a whole lot better than what you have now, just minor changes here and there. If it were me I'd hang onto it, keep up the maitinance, and add some mods here and there like suspension valving, and springs for your weight, ceramic bearings in the lowerend and trans, triple trees, billet junk, folding levers, etc. The RMs of that family from, I think 01 and up, are all great bikes, some of the stock components were kinda chinsey, but that was due to Suzuki realizing that most of those parts would be replaced w/ cool aftermarket stuff anyway. I'll go look at your other thread and see if I can help you out.
See ya round

Wow! Thanks man! I really do like my bike. I have the suspension valved and sprung for my weight already. I got that done last winter and it really was a great investment. My bike has vforce reeds and the pro circuit pipe and R304 silencer combo. I think I may just do that man, keep it. I have to be honest with myself, I really won't be able to ride a lot.

I need to find some comfortable bars. I've never had good luck picking bars. My Team suzuki/mike alessi bars were close but they had too much sweep...and they were destroyed in my crash. I'm gonna try the Windham bars this summer. I also want some really nice levers and perches. Thanks for the help!

Howdy Sides! Welcome here.
Nice RM250. I would say from 2004 onwards, all RM250's are good.
Some small changes to the brake(hose), porting, and some different needles, and graphics,
they're the same. If you put RM-Z plastics on, it looks like a 2010 RM250.
But if you concider another Japanese 250, i'd say the YZ250 is pretty bulletproof from 2007
onwards. Specially with the SSS suspension. But it's all up to you.
If you take the bugs out of your RM, and mod it a bit, it's all very close in terms of pure fun!

RMZ plastics will fit on my 03 or are you saying the 04 and up? I think a port job on my bike would be cool, although it already is pretty damn snappy! It blows my buddys CR out of the water, when it comes to the powerband. That CR is kinda boring...

Have you tried the CR Hi bend? they are by far the most comfortable bend I have tried. I use a narrow version of that bend for woods riding, it is commonly known as the KX80 bend, or from Moose racing , the Burleson bend. It is identical to the CR hi but 29 inches wide.

I guess an RM-Z front fender will fit, but why would you want it too look like a thumper...
It's still goes good in comparison to the new bikes.
But yea, if you do some good mods to your bike, like some already mentioned, you will ride it with
equal enthousiasm as you would with a new bike. There's not much wrong with an RM250.
A great bike in it's class. Oh, and i think Suzuki lowered the seat height with 5mm by 2005,
and the footpegs placed 1cm. more to the back. And some wave disc rotors.
That's all that has changed, plus the things in my previous post.

Nice RM250 there alot of fun to ride. The later rm 250,s if I remember right  had more lowend, they tried to make it easier to ride-less explosive, they had less top end  all so. For better clutch action riders  rounded the ends more, on the clutch push rod, after market basket and stuff. You might want to get a rg3 4 rubber mount tripple clamp, with pro tapers-the bars flex, so if you have something wrong on your upper body, the impacts are lessed. I  run a higher and farther forward rg3 clamp, with windham bend, but I,m kinda tall. I  got a rg3 clamp for a cr125 last year, I bartered with them and got  over 200 bucks off.

Welcome sideways.  Yeah that's a nice RM you've got there. Now if you just paint it green and call it a KX it would be perfect.  :P ;D

X2,CR highs are my favorite and I cut them down to 29.5 inches.
I'd keep the bike you've got, nothing else out there handles like an RM.I had to laugh when I read your post though.Only a biker would be laid up from a bike related injury and be using to time to decide on a new one-lol.
Welcome aboard.

Personally I like the rm 250 plastic, not really keen on the newer F model front fender designs. I was thinking about putting the new KXF front fender and # plate on my KX but the more I look at it the more goofy looking it is.

 I love the sport!
My wife thinks im crazy!

Case 1.  When the EMT's were loading me in the ambulance last time I guess I kept asking how the bike was(don't remember)
My buddy that was helping said one of the emt's said-"you know, they always ask about their bikes but I've never been to a car accident where someone asks about their car"

Case 2. When the same buddy broke his neck in a riding accident,I dropped of all the issues of the latest dirt bike mags at his mother in laws place before I went to work as she was heading up to the hospital that morning. She looked at me like I was a retard and said-"he won't want anything to do with those stupid things now" Sure he will,I told her-just give them to him.She did...and he did.

It seems to be a common theme-or mental deficiency. :-\

Looking solid ACMX, track looks great too. I wish I had a set of whoops like that to ride, my local track had whoops they took them out :(. Whoops and corners are my favorite, the great thing about whoops are that you can try so many technics thru them and progress. When no ones riding I ride the whoops forward and backward, my 04 is valved for clay whoops, the forks are right on, the shock is a little off, I don,t like the shock to rebound quickly, I like the shock to feel slower rebounding. If I jump 4 whoops in I want the shock rebounding slow, so I can skim the whoops instead of the shock kicking the wheel up and loosing my drive to skim them.
