Title: Anyone have problems with HotRods crank assemblies?
Post by: Watson777 on December 08, 2010, 08:57:18 PM
We are rebuilding my wifes 125 and I was going to do a HotRods crank assembly but then it seems like I saw a few people say they had them snap. Was gonna do a Pro-X but they don't make a complete crank assembly. Anyone have any input or suggestions?

I would stay away from hot rods.  Never used one myself, but I've heard it from too many people that the coating will come off and they break easily.  I heard they are made in China.  I would try OEM or Wiesco.

I've used them both, rod kits for rebuilding cranks and whole cranks. Never had an issue. Guess there always could be an issue, but never have had one so far.  The only thing they don't seem to do is balance them very well. I have balanced them before if they were way off.  That also could be from handling from warehouses etc.  Some get dropped, some get tossed, but that is the same with direct from manufacturers as well.  I use to work at a Honda warehouse. It was called American Honda but was in Iowa. Just for the dumbies who wanna call bs, just because it is an American Honda place, it doesn't mean it's in California, and it doesn't mean it was for the racing teams   :-( .  Anyways, I saw things being tossed around, like pistons etc, because there were bins that each part had to go into.  Well, lazies would just toss parts from their group of parts, as they seperated them to be shipped to seperate dealers.  By the way, didn't know Weisco made cranks or crank kits?  If that is the case, sure they do good stuff..

Actually lately over on TT more guys are having problems with Wiseco cranks than Hot rods. Made me nervous because I put a Wiseco in my nephew's KX60. But it's been holding up fine.

I have used Hot Rods before also without issue.

One question I have, is the people saying they are having problems. Are they on 2 stroke cranks or 4 strokes?

2 Stroke (with the Wiseco). Apparently there have been some issues of the cranks not being true as shipped. This is just what I read of course. I spend a lot of time on the Kawasaki Two stroke forum over there.

I did hear a few months ago an issue with the machining of a wiesco crank on one of the vintage forums.

I won't run Wiseco anything. Never had anything good come from Wiseco in my 2 or 4 strokes. Always non stop issues. Also to anyone who is reading this NEVER NEVER EVER run Namura pistons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used one once, and it was not balanced right, my dad has installed several of them in his shop, 2 and 4 strokes, had issues with most of them.

I will not use one again.

I will buy a OEM rod kit, and have someone put the new rod on and balance it, we have a machine shop here that does it for $40.00, and they do a perfect job, and if you go that route should not be anymore then a hotrod crank.

And I agree with Wiseco, I only use OEM engine parts now, or I have had good luck with Niks ProX pistons.

Watson, you are in my area so I can reccomend the guy who does the work on my stuff.  Infact, if you go to a shop some of them outsource to him (like motosport) and charge you double or even triple what he charges.  He has his own machine shop in his garage and I've had him do resleeves, bores, cranks and even make engine parts or special parts for projects.  You can ask him what he thinks since that's what he does.

That guys carb and head mods are VERY popular on kdxriders.net. They even have a separate forum set up to ask questions about the RB mods.

I have used Wiseco, HR, and OEM. I have never had a failure problem from any of them, although I have heard some stories about all of them.
I try to use OEM if possible. I have parted several bikes with locked up Hot Rods bottom end components.

I would love to use OEM but all the Yamaha shops around here have been ran into the ground and there fore I no longer have a sponsorship on OEM parts and all be damned if i am gonna pay retail! Thats the only reason I was asking about Hot Rods. We have always used oem internals but don't have that option anymore at this point.

I know Service Honda is cheap for OEM parts, and they also build some of the best two strokes on the planet. Hit them up Watson !!

They have decent prices...... Nothing like what I was getting from the Yami shop here and nothing like what I can get HotRods and the other aftermarket stuff for :-(

You can also try mrcycles.com and bikebandit.com what parts are you trying to get?  If your also looking at bearings I'd order direct from bearing supply, you can get great quality bearings for a good price and should be cheaper than what Honda or Yamaha would charge for the same bearing.

I don't know why you're ready to change the crank... did you have a problem with it? If not, why not just rebuild the stock one with an OEM rod kit?

The crank seal went out and fried everything! the whole inside of the motor is gold and all messed up. It is an 05 and has never had a bottom end so I would rather just do everything now and not have to do it again cuz she doesn't ride it much anymore.
