Just found out my magazine sub started the month right after this one =(
OT: Why does it take months for magazine sub. to send out your first issue? Shouldn't they be able to put your name in there computer right away and send the next issue out?

That cover is bristling with pro-two-stroke material!
"Best bike ever made."
"Twice the power, half the cost."
"Killing 125 was a big mistake."
As for the reason it takes a while, I would hazard a very speculative guess that they send orders to the printing press quite early, so that the printers can work out an efficient schedule without having some fool magazine editors throwing surprises at them the day before the magazines ship. So when you ordered your subscription, the order to the printers for this issue was probably already sent and circled on the calendar. Again, this is pure speculation.

That is literally my dream bike.

What is with these people and the ktm electric bikes? They are lame. 25hp with 1 hour of ride time.

Yes but it is about exploring new ideas, it allows for urban riding because it is so quiet. I personally don't think it is very practical, but the internal combustion engine was not practical at the beginning I am pretty sure.
-
I emailed mxa to put it on there website! :D

How long does a moto last? Probably quite a bit less than an hour. Although, the recharge time might get in the way if it's long.
I really don't mind electric bikes. They've got a place and as has been said before, I think the best place for them is the place that's not accessible right now. You simply can't have motocross with internal combustion engines in a densely-populated area. But electric bikes, which don't make noise, don't make smoke, and have a phobia of being too far-separated from the power grid, are perfect for that application. I wouldn't mind them racing internal combustion engines, either, as long as they're at equal-displacement. "Ah, but JETZ!" I hear you say, "Electric bikes don't have displacement!" You're right. Therefore, they shouldn't be racing against internal combustion engines for official scored events. There's just no standard you can point at to compare the two, unless you want to declare that all bikes must only have 35 horsepower and no more (which would be stupid).
Now that that rant is done, here's an idea. I don't know how big and unwieldy regenerative brakes have to be in order to be effective (in other words, this idea might not work) but I think that if they can get them to work on a bike, they'll massively increase battery life. Instead of spending a bunch of battery power and turning that into movement, only to burn it away with the brakes, you can keep that energy in the system by recharging the battery(ies) when braking. They're already doing that with electric cars, and diesel-electric locomotives have been using regenerative (they call it "dynamic") braking for ages. I believe the electric motor itself is used as the brake in those cases.

i wonder ,when the electric bikes will get better
will they do the same to the 4 stroke as they did to the 2 strokes?
-
Answer this: What is it solving?
1. Bikes are loud!
Put a better silencer on them? Its really not worth noise for the extra 1-3hp("Cough" JETZ "Cough"), and even now there are silencers that fix that problem. This goes for both 4t's and 2t's.
2. Global Warming!
It doesn't exist! Get over it!
3. It doesn't pollute!
No, but Lithium-ion polymer plants do.
4. Its more reliable!
Rofl, my friends 2 stroke nitro diesel rc car has lasted longer than my 4 of my brothers brushless motors and twice as many batteries.
5. More cost efficient!
Really? Check your electric bill after riding 5-6 hours a day.
Another problem is power to weight ratio which is equivalent to a rock being pulled by a rubber band.

I look at electric bikes this way. They will not race 2t and 4t for a long time to even worry about it. (10+ years) But they would be great for hitting some bmx jumps, riding at my school =), or riding behind my dad's shop (100x100 with houses all around it). They provide an extra way to train and practice for the real MX every day, that most people can't do normally. Its a add on to MX not a replacement.
-
1-3hp means a lot on a 15hp bike.
-
they dont look too bad. this guy apparently rode all day on his electric bike. yes i really was that bored today that i had time to look this up

I like at the beginning where he's basically wearing a hoodie to hide his face like hes in 'I rode an electric dirtbike protection'
-
Little do you know he had to recharge his bike 3 times in the making of this video.
-
I am just tired of everyone saying that electric power is the future, when clearly its not.
-
i didn't say it's the future
but they push it on the market
ktm allready does
-
As with any MXA article, the KX125 article is a let down. It's just a bike that Mitch had and let Weimer ride. I think I have this at home. I'll look.
-
I do have this article... I was going to type it out for the site, but never got around to it. I'll try to scan it in a few days or so...
-
Well, sadly the electric bike will get treated like any other dirtbike when it comes to banning it from riding areas and such. They might not make a lot of noise, but they'll kick up a lot of dust, and contribute to soil erosion and all that wonderful jazz.
Plus, I'm sure people will hit the angle of it being so quiet it's a danger to others on trails, etc... They'll find something, and this green tech will be just as evil as the rest of the dirtbikes.
-
Well, I think the electric bike is cool for urban riding and while it is not close to being ready for the trails, it could be ready for local motocross tracks if you have multiple batteries and chargers at the track. Eventually in my opinion the electric bike will be the future, unless the algae fuel which Jetz pointed out ends up becoming popular which I really hope it does.
-
another thing if you thought 4 stroke where expensive, :o.

Oh i know dude.. but it is still a cool idea in my opinion. It won't fully replace gas bikes, but, I think it will be a nice and welcomed addition.
-
I find it very interesting that every time the subject of an electric bike, there are so many reasons why it won't work.
Now to be clear, I'm not saying that the electric bike is the future, but I think it's an interesting idea that warrants examination. Its true that no one knows what the future will bring, but I think it's important to keep an open mind.
To put all of this into perspective in the 1400's it was KNOWN that the world was flat. If you lived at that time you had no doubt that this was the case. Even when the evidence was overwhelming that this was false, many people continued to believe that the world was flat.
What kind of person are you??
Open to new thoughts, ideas and creativity? Or closed minded and positive that nothing will ever change?
-
al i know if the future is writen as electric bike
i whant onw with speakers who plays 2 stroke sounds ;D
-
I could live that. :P
-
The world being flat is objectively false. But electric bikes being superior to gasoline bikes, is a subjective matter that varies depending on who you ask. A lot of people will like them better, a lot of people will be forced to use them based on their circumstances, and a lot of people are simply going to prefer gasoline. It's like two-strokes, we can't say flatly that they are better motorcycles, because there will always be someone who prefers the way a four-stroke does its business, even if the field is equal-displacement. It's natural to hear nothing but opinions, when the issue at hand (electric vs gas) is almost purely a matter of opinion. The same is true when debates about electric cars arise, it's rather remarkable how similar the conversations turn out.

Uh-oh,I think you've just P'd off all the old Maico owners on here John :D
As for electric,I'm all for new technology and anything that keeps riding areas open but they have a long way to go yet.Recharge issues aside, they begin losing power almost immediately so the charge duration is irrelevant. So you made the double on lap 1?Good,'cause you ain't gonna make it on lap 4.
Jetz's idea of the charge braking works but adds to much weight to a bike to be feasible.
What really, really gets me about the electric debate,is the "good for the environment thing"The fact that end user sees it as being clean means nothing in the overall scheme of things.Over half of the U.S.'s electricity comes from burning coal. Here in N.S.,the figure is over 80%.The fact that you yourself see no emissions doesn't mean that some of the dirtiest emissions out there weren't generated in the production of your "clean energy"
I'd love to see figures of emissions generated to produce 1kw of energy for all the alternative fuels-as well as gasoline. The solution may well be electric but with a clean way of producing high enough amounts to meet everyone's needs.
We were at one of the Nat parks this year and one of the Rangers saw me looking over their electric car and came over to sing it's praises to me.When I mentioned the above she said"geez,I never thought of that-but I'll look in to it" I'm not sure if she ever did of course but it's surprising how few give any thought to where it comes from.

its a trend, ;D.
