I have been debating about moving on to bikes, since discovering the total cost to set my trike or a quad up for MX :o. I have some experience with bikes just not a whole lot, the question is, what bike should I get? I am 19, 5'11, 190-200lbs, I will be riding track, trails, dunes, etc.. Any help would be great.

Well factoryX I hope your looking for a 2-stroke motocross bike & if you are the choices you have for a brand new MX bike are basically a Yamaha YZ-125 or 250 or a KTM-150SX or 250SX....There are a few other European brands besides KTM to such as TM's, GasGas , Husqvarna's and hopefully the ultimate 2-stroke brand will get here to the U.S. soon which would be Maico & they have a 250mmx,320mmx,380mmx,500mmx,620mmx and even a 700mmx to choose from!!!... ;D

two stroke for sure, wouldn't have anything else. well thats just it, right now I can't afford new, so its going to have to be sloppy seconds for the moment but I am not going older the than 97(tired of working on older bikes :-X), so I have quite a few choices. But my main concern is not trying to rush into things and get my self hurt.
The yz250 is the most likely candidate.

You can't go wrong with a good YZ-250! I would just look it over really well before buying it so you don't get it home or on the track or trail & realize it has worn out swingarm bearings or wheel bearings or something like that before you go ripping around the track on it! Also & I'm sure you know this but make sure it still has good compression & ask the seller for any parts receipts. That's just what I would do before slapping down your money on it... ;D

Since your looking for a used bike, really any color would suit your needs. As with any purchase of a used machine, condition, condition, condition... What was the owners schedule of maintenaince. How often did he change / clean the air filter, change the tranny fluid. Did they every repack the swingarm and wheel bearings. What has he done to the engine, replace the top end, or bottom end bearings... There are the questions you want to get answered
Any of the different brands of bike will be fine, search around for the best condition for the money. Sometimes it takes a little while to find the "right" bike, but its out there waiting for you.

Just find a 2t in good shape as recent a model year as possible in your price range and enjoy.

already have that in mind, just looking for the bike that fits my needs. right now the best deals in oregon are the 2000 and up yz250's. $1200-$2300 even though they are over priced.

Wheel and deal with the seller as much as you can factoryX.Look both of the bikes over really good ask about the maintenance schedule as emprovenzano mentioned and anything you see that will need a little maintenance bring that up to the seller and whatever you think the bike is worth make them an offer and keep sbout $1650.00 in your wallet and the rest of your money in your pocket and when you pull the money out of your wallet say "Well all I have right now is $1650.00 cash"and you'd be surprised at what straight up CASH $$$ does at times!But definetly make an offer you feel is fair.... ;)

I wouldn't want to buy a bike without at least hearing it run first. If you'll be buying local, when you go to check it out you'll want to see how it starts, idles, revs up, etc. Maybe even take it down the street through a few gears (not too fast though, don't want to run over a baby) and make sure that the basics are working. Maybe ask around beforehand on what noises to listen for that might be indicative of trouble on that particular kind of bike, so you can spot potential trouble and ask some questions if you hear something fishy. And as always, it's good to know why the person is selling the item.

I would like to recomend looking for a used two stroke Honda. :D
Perhaps an 2007 CR 125 or CR250, which ever size fits you.
If money is an issue I think the bikes mentioned above would be an excellent buy until you can purchase a newer bike.
And my experience in trying to find a used two stroke Honda is that its very rare, that tells me that they hold their value, reliability and race well.
I believe all parts can still be found for rebuilds ect.

2 totally different motors.....1 is a normal cylinder reed motor(01) and 1 is a case reed motor(02)and it all depends on who you talk to on which is better,alot of ppl like the older(01) motor better beacause they claim the 02 has less balls because of a to big reed area,and not as much bottom end but i have had both and yes the 01 has more bottom and so it feels stronger to some but i personally like the 02 motor better because of its strong midrange and top end pull but only after u fix the jetting issues.......just my 2 cents worth

I dont know the engine changes and pro's and con's but I think some of the other Honda 2t owners maybe able to help you out there.
I have heard that the last year model CR's were great handling bikes.
I think RideRedMx2 might be able to talk about the different engines and even SuperTrucker also.

Right. I knew the motor changed at one time and had heard the earlier motor was better. Well acording to some people ;D
So the 02 motor is the same as 07 ?

Pretty close yes they added a Throttle Position Sensor to the carb in 04 to 07 different reeds and and some porting differences from year to year but yes there all pretty much the same 02-07.......Ck this link out it gives all the specs on the CR-250's from 1998 to 2006

Holy balls, them's some thorough answers right there. All I ever heard was the 01 was awesome and the 02 pulled big numbers but lacked real grunt. But it would appear, and as always, that things are not as simple as they first seem.
