Title: Husqvarna TE250 compared to 2 strokes? What is this!!??
Post by: YZ250 on May 01, 2011, 06:41:34 PM
My dad recently bought a husky te250 and its really cool. we haven't got it in the garage yet because we still have to pay for it before it leaves the dealer, don't ask, its just a deal that my dad made. anyways we have heard some really cool things about it, and also some really bold and almost unbelievable claims about its performance. My dad talked to the mechanic at the dealer and he said that this bike will do 100 mph out of the box. now while that is pretty insane, it still is believable. what i find to be too big of a claim is this: the mechanic had owned the same type of bike before and he said that there was so much top end power that it had the power of a 2 stroke power band in the top rpm's. Now i ride 2 strokes (hence my account name) and i have only ever owned 2 strokes -5 bikes to be exact- ever since my first bike and i know first hand the sheer power of the 2 stroke power band. Everyone knows that the power in the 2 stroke top rpm/power band is unmatched by any four stroke. If the displacements (cc's) were the same on a four stroke and a 2 stroke bike, the 2 stroke would smoke the four stroke no questions asked. So I find it very hard to believe that this husqvarna is capable of what these guys at the shop are saying. I'm not saying its a bad bike, i love it as a matter of fact, but this just seems ridiculous. I'm not very experienced yet since i've only been riding for 6 years, so tha'ts why i'm asking the people on this forum that have the "know how". So do you think this 4 stroke has the top end power of a 2 stroke? I'm thinking maybe, if the 2 stroke they compared it to was a 65 or 85, but in my opinion, its nowhere near a 125 or 250 2 stroke. Even with your knowledgeable answers, there's only one way to find out. ride it. but still, do tell me what you think. : :P :)

Is it turbocharged, or have a ridiculously dramatic "VTEC" kind of thing?  If it's not, I don't really see it happening.  I can imagine they could make it like a 125 if they really went to town on making the powerband crazy, and that would of course give it a bit more power than a 125 (a 250F already peaks close to a 125, so if you remove all the low-end you'd expect to have a higher peak) but if they're claiming it will match a 250 two-stroke then I'm very skeptical indeed.  As you've said, there's only one way to find out.

I rode a brand new TE310 4 stroke two weeks ago. It is not as fast as my stock yz250. it will barley pull the front wheel off the ground in third gear.
Most dealer sales guys are dishonest and ill informed.

All salesmen are full of shit.
Ask the salesman if it will beat the WR250.
Be interesting what he says. ::)

Or better still trade it in now for a WR. :)

It will beat the two stroke in only one type of race....

Back to the dealer for major service.

And that most probably holds true even if the contest we're talking about is the type of slanted field that get's Davey Coombs and the rest of the brown-nosed corporate servants and the empty talking heads on the industry dole all wet in the sweats, 125 2T vs. 250 4T.

Pitiful!

could be he is comparing it to a KDX200 or RMX250 but will definitely not beat a 250 motocross 2 stroke. it will rev higher but not make more power

My dad has a 2011 Te250. The bike is just like other 250f's power wise. Handle's like a dream though (for a four stroke)

100mph is all in the gearing. In 1972, my Dad's Husky 250 WR would do 100 across the dry lakes in the Mohave with little more than the countershaft sproket changed. My YZ125 set up for Eastern Enduros would do 70 (which is faster than a KTM200 stock!). I geared it different for a race in Nevada and hit 83 before it tried to seize but I still wasn't geared tall enough for the terrain.

I see no reason for a test between the TE250 and a 2T except to make whomever made the claim look stupid - but then again, just by making the claim, we already know it.

Having ridden a TE250 all I can say is that salesman is so full of s**t  I'd report him to the better business bureau. I like Husky's but any KTM 200 etc. will leave that thing in the dust.

Gearing up will usually get you more speed, but you still need enough horsepower to push the bike and rider through the air, 37 horsepower will not get the te250 and a rider anywhere close to 100mph.

I sense a scientific experiment coming on!  How much horsepower does it take to propel a dirt-bike and rider to 100mph?  It would be fun to find out, if for no other reason than you'd get to ride a lot of bikes fast as hell.  I think, if 37 won't get it to a hundred, it would get it close.  I don't know how much power my 250 has but I doubt it's as high as 42, and when it's maxed out in sixth (which is an overdrive, BTW) there's still a lot of pull.  If a '72 250WR can do 100, then the TE250 should at least be close.

I remember hearing long ago that it took 32hp (if my memory is correct) to propel an unfaired motorcycle and rider to 100 mph.I recall at the age of 16 I was riding an 1966 Ducati Mach 1 250 and it would reach a 101 mph on a slight downhill grade. ;D

Depending on the weight of the rider id say 37 would do it or be damn close, my 2000 yz 125 with a full pro circuit system, v force 3s, a 13 tooth front and 51 rear will do between 85-87, and i weigh 140 in gear

37hp at the rear wheel will get 100mph with gearing changed and sat on the back mudguard with head down on the tank, but unless they are geared stupidly high it wont do 100 out of the crate, and if you have cash in your hand in a showroom the salesman will tell you anything you want to hear to rip the money out of your hand :D
