Title: Stupid Or embarrassing things you have done on a bike
Post by: TMKIWI on September 01, 2011, 09:43:43 PM
As the title says, What is the stupidest or most embarrassing thing you have done on a motorbike.
There are a few "seasoned" riders on here ;D that must have some good stories.
And you young fella's.

Mine:
Stupidest: When I was 17, my cousin and I left work at 3am to go home on his CBR1000.Traveling thru town in a 50kph zone I thought we were travaling a bit fast (I was pillion) and pulled my head out to look at the speedo. 280kmh. Past the hospital. It took about 400 meter's to pull up before the next set of lights. STUPID STUPID STUPID.

Embarrassing: Showing off to some girls when I was 14. I was doing my best Ivan Mauger ( Speedway Champ) impersonation on the beach and was going quite well until the bike gripped and high sided me into the sand. Bike landed on top of me and the foot peg put a hole in my leg. The girls had to carry me back to the car park.. :-[
I didn't even get a sympathy kiss.

Last year, I entered a local race set up on a soccer field. It was basically flat with berms and a single jump so I entered my 1971 Bultaco (boat-tail) Pursang 250. I had never ridden it before but I figured if I could kick it with my left foot, I was smart enough to shift with my left foot.

The organization ran qualifying as the fastest two laps in the 15 minute practice session and surprise, I qualified 2nd overall! Mind you, this is not a vintage race but modern machinery, the oldest being a buddies 1999 Honda CR250 - that everyone considered old and out of date!

So I get up on the line in the second position as they use Grand Prix style staggered starts, bring up the revs on the unmuffled exhaust to near redline and at the drop of the starters flag - bawaaaa! I hole shot and lead into the first turn! On a 40 year old motorcycle! As I approached the left hand hairpin berm, I grabbed a hand full of front brake and went to down shift and rear brake slide into the turn but IN THE RED MIST OF BATTLE, got my feet confused! I couldn't find the brake, down shifted and I had no more time to react and correct myself. I just pinned it and hit the berm straight on.

Now on most motocross tracks, there would be some kind of runoff, or another part of the track, or a hay bail (tough block), but again this was an old soccer field so 3 feet  behind the berm was a 4 foot concrete wall and beyond that, the grand stands - where I landed.

Unfortunately, the old Bull didn't. It hit the top of the wall at about the middle of the front tire. Bent both triples, the steering stem itself, both fork tubes, and the front axle. I got a nice bruise on my thigh (from going over the handlebars) and a larger one on my ego.

I've since repaired the bike and tried to race it on another (quad friendly) MX track where I qualified 6th fastest but ran into intake problems and ended up running my Penton 175. Someday it'll scare the kiddies and lead the pack again!

A friend of mine borrowed the first CBX1000 Honda in western Canada from his father's shop.I stopped by to see him and, being the nice guy that he was,he told me to take the Honda for a spin.I rode the bike to a rural area and decided to open it up.I looked in my rear view mirror and other then one grey car, the coast was clear and I put the Honda through it's paces.

I marveled at the effortless power the big six made and through one "s" section braked to about 190 kmh and lofted the front end over a railway crossing.I then returned to my friend's business and gave him back the big Honda remarking that if I owned the bike I would probably end up in jail.

Just then a grey, unmarked police car came sliding into the parking parking lot. This big, burly cop got out, grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and threw me in the back seat. He started telling me the consequences of my actions ,his voice shaking. All the while I could hear that old pushrod interceptor V8 going "clink, clink", the kind of noise such an engine made when pushed too hard. Finally the cop blurted out "What the h#ll is that thing? It's so fast I only got one reading on you when you slowed to 190 at that railway crossing!".

The police officer then offered me a deal, he would either throw the book at me or, if I promised to keep off street bikes until I could behave myself, let me go with a warning.

All these years later, I kept my promise.

I had not been on a bike in years (too many years), when my nephew just got an early 90's CR85.  He was messing around in a field across from his house just goofing off.  I of course had to take her for a spin....  I start down through the field, (about 600 yards long) and its not long before I'm in 6th gear WFO...  I'm thinking damn this little bugger is fast...  Coming to the end of the field, I reach down for the rear brake....  OH %^&* it's bent up under the case, and my foot is too big to use it...  Now the fence at the end of the field is coming up fast....  I revert back to my old days...  ( you have to realize, when I quit riding the front brakes were still drum brakes, and most of the time they were horrible. They were only to be used in an emergency, as they would grab, lock up the front end and down you'd go)  I stuck out my leg, shifted down into 3rd, laid the bike over, grabbed a handful of throttle, and did a perfect 90 degree turn, wheeling out at the end...  I took the bike back to my nephew, as he was amazed...  I just smiled and went back to the house.  My wife said wow you can still handle a bike...  I didn't say much as I needed to go change my huggies...

Think GOD it was an 85, and I could man handle the little bike...  I still don't know how I didn't slide out on the turn, as there wasn't a berm to rail around, all I can say is someone above was looking out after me...

Pack up all the gear, bikes, quads, kids, etc.  get to the track, fire up the bike, and it just doesn't want to run right...  It was perfect the last time out...  WTF is going on...  I'm about ready to load up and go home, when my son says hey dad, try turning off the choke.... boy did I feel like a dummy....

Funny you should mention police chases Sachs. I have a couple.

1990, Myself and some workmates went for a 2 week holiday around the South Island taking in the "Brass Monkey" bike rally.
There was a FZ600,GSXR1100,GSXF1100,CBR1000 & Z1100.
Cruzing down the coast into Christchurch I was leading the group doing about 140-150kph.
As we entered the outer city I slowed to about 70kph (70kph zone) and stood up to stretch the legs  (sports bikes are hard on the legs when touring).
At that time all the boys went flying past me. I tried to wave them down but they were off. WTF ???
So I put the hammer down and we went weaving thru side streets for no appartent reason.
Finally after a few km's we stopped and I asked WTF is going on.
Terry said didn't you see the 2 cop cars chasing us. :o
Well obviously I didn't. ::)

Another time ,I had just arrived in London and my mate Jason took me for a tour of the city on his Guzzi.
We were stuck in traffic so Jas decides to drive up the wrong side of the road to get past the stationary traffic. We finally stop at a traffic island where we couldn't go any further because of 2 buses blocking the road. As we are sitting there I happen to look behind us to see a cop on a horse galloping up the road pointing at us (true story).
Now I thought that was a bit funny so tapped Jas on the shoulder and said 'hey there is a cop chasing us". Jas says bullshit but looks around to see the cop about 50ft behind us blowing his whistle.
That was like a red rag to a bull so Jas takes off up the footpath around the busses, and in and out of the traffic. The cop was still behind us and we weren't getting away from him.

(The funny bit is this was probably one of the slowest police chases in history. We would not have gone over 40kph.We could have run just as fast.)

Finally the traffic opened up a bit and we managed to get away abit, but at the roundabout ahead there were 2 cop cars waiting. He obviously radioed ahead.
As luck would have it there were 2 trucks on the double lane roundabout side by side, and we managed to sqeeze between them and get around the roundabout without the cops seeing us.
It was then a mad dash up the expressway and away. ;D
First and only time I have ever been chased by a cop on horseback.
Still funny till this day. :P

Far too many too mention but the stupidest would be passing out at a party and coming too at about 2am and deciding to ride my month old bike (yamaha radian)home in a rainstorm.I sold what was left of it for $300.I then continued to pay off a 5 yr loan on nothing.I had ins. but didn't dare claim at as around here,I never would have been able to afford to insure another one.At least it was only 4.5 months until the cast came off.
I've had many of people laughing at me from-"yeah,I could do that" or "watch this " moments but the one I always found funny was when I crashed my SX trying to go crosscountry through a clearcut chopping.I almost made it too.when I finally cuffed it about 10 yds short of the tree line,I went down in a heap with the bike on top of me.I wasn't hurt in the least but my right leg went under one branch, over another and under another-locking me there.I could push the bike off me with my left foot but couldn't push it over as the wheels were jammed between branches and it would fall back on top of me.I was effectively pinned and couldn't figure a way out.I layed there for about 15 min while my left leg was shaking trying to hold the bike off until my buddy came back. After P-ing himself laughing for a while, then sitting on a stump for a while until my leg gave out and the bike fell down on me again,he got bored and pulled the bike off and got the center branch on my leg out so I could get up. :D

It's funny how mates are like that ford.
On the South Island trip I fell off on some black ice and all the boys wanted to do was take photos of me pinned under the bike.
Wasn't so funny as the exhaust was burning my leg. >:(
I only hurt my pride.

Hahahaha,I guess things are the same all over.I remember once we were riding just after most of the snow was gone and a buddy went sideways trying to skirt a stream on the icy bank and went down on his back, through the ice with the bike on top of him.Just half of his helmet was above water and he figured the bike was about to push his head under and drown him.He was screaming for help so naturally I leisurely parked mine against a tree and looked down at him while laughing my arse off. That stream had a solid bottom and was only a few inches deep but he didn't know that-not at first anyway. ;D

I've got a similar one - back abound '91 I went trail riding with some friends who all had 250 MX'ers, and I was on a fully modded '84 RM 125 that made absolutely no power until about 10,000 RPM and signed off at about 12,000 - not an ideal trail bike!!  We came to a brook crossing on a power line, and they all torqued through, splashing through about 2 feet of water and throwing roosted mud about 30' in the air.  I was the last one through, and knew there was no way to make it through without some serious approach speed, so it hit it 4th gear pinned.  About half way across, my front tire dropped into one of the 250's ruts and over the bars I went, into the water.  My leg was pinned under the bike and it was all I could do to keep my mouth above the water level.  I thought I was going to drown, but like most buddies, instead of helping, they just laughed hysterically......

...and another time, when I was young, I thought it was a good idea to ride my Husky down the railroad tracks...in the middle of the night to access...THE GOLF COURSE! Yeah, I on my 175 (not the same one I have now - my brother has that one) and my buddy on a CZ400 (he wishes he still had that one!) out having a ball! It was all I ever dreamed of and more; smooth, grippy, super fast, long jumps with pillowy landings, and carving berms in the sand traps. Everything was going good but we decided not to press our luck and we headed back to the rail road tracks to make our escape. All of a sudden, I was thrown over the bars! It felt like the school dean just hit me in the ass with the paddle and I had nothing to hold on to! I got up and saw people running from the greens keeper's shed. I jumped up and picked up the bike to take off and pain shot through my back, butt and thighs. I had been SHOT! In the pooper! I freaked but got on the bike and raced outta there. Sixth gear, flat out down the railroad tracks and off into the woods. In the dark. On motocross bikes. Halfway home we had to cross a creek. It was narrow but deep and in daylight we often jumped it but this night, in pain, I thought it better to ride through it. As I splashed down into the water, tears came to my eyes as white hot shards of pure pain exploded on my tushy. I barely got home before I collapsed in a bloody mess on the driveway.

My buddy, as all do, just stood there laughing at me but eventually carried me in the house and to his credit, spent the rest of the night digging the rock salt out of my shredded hinny.

It was many years before I ever ventured timidly back on a golf course again.

I'm sure that I am no different than the rest of the older vets here, and like everybody else I could probably write a book about funny and not so funny happenings. One that comes to mind is falling over in the pits after practice in front of what seemed like everybody. I was coming to a stop, put my left foot out and then OH, OH, no ground. I stopped right next to a hole that I didn't see. So what could I do? I jumped up and had taken a bow. Talk about  embarrassing! Another time (a long time ago) I was tring out a new Lectron carb on one of my Jawas. Where I used to live there was a fairly long straight that ran from the street, between two houses which ended in a large back yard with a chain link fence at the very end. Anyway, I was making my normal Speedway start as usual when at approx. at the half way point where I always close the throttle, well, needless to say that damn carb stuct wide open with that fence FAST approaching. Without thinking I just moved my weight toward the rear and let the front end come up, which I then proceeded to mow down. As soon as I cleared the fence I jumped off therefore uncoupling the dead man kill switch which helped somewhat but I was still able to see that bike wheelie at 60 or so MPH to the next chain link fence that had a swimming pool very close to it!!! SAVED!!! WHEW; Miraculously it only got hung up in the fence and it did not make it's way through to the other side to take a bath. It did do a number on the front end. The funniest part was when my Dad came out and said "I was wondering when you were going to shut that G** D*** bike down, and I hope that taught you a lesson?" It sure did, never use a G** D*** Lectron carb ever again. I guess he still remembered the time I was riding another one in the back and crashed into the BBQ, or getting pissed off at the DMV because I failed the written exam twice for a street license and the woman behind the counter wouldn't cut me any slack when I tried to show her my AMA Lic. Or the time when...well that's another story for another time.

I love exploring offroad and one weekend I wanted to check out an interesting area.Given the distances involved and the fact that there would be  lots of campers in the region I selected a Yamaha XT200 - quiet and easy on gas.

It was a warm ,sunny morning and all was going well until the bike seized about 30 k into the journey.I had tools with me and I proceeded to try to figure out why on earth this thing locked up.My mechanic had installed a new clutch the previous week and, yup, the motor was full of fresh oil.More trouble shooting and I realized the top end was starved for oil.But why? The oil pump was fine.I removed the oil filter and there was the answer,Rick had installed the side cover gasket incorrectly and restricted oil flow to the cylinder head.

After about 10 kilometers of pushing I met some dual sport guys and they said their sweep truck could give me and the XT a ride back. The Toyota pickup arrived shortly and, being loaded to the brim with gas cans and camping gear, the lady driver and myself devised a tie down tow rope to get me home.

The gravel road had been freshly graded so I told the lady to take it easy. She didn't.As I fought to keep the XT upright in the loose gravel I yelled at her to slow down. She couldn't hear me over the road noise.I watched the XT's speedo climb and when it hit 100kmh I decided now is a good time as any to jump ship.Being the long legged guy that I am,I simply stood up and watched the XT disappear out from under me.To this day I still recall that fleeting sensation of skiing down that gravel road at 60 mph in my motocross boots.I then started to tumble,as was the XT behind that truck when finally the Mensa candidate figured out something was wrong and stopped.

A logging truck gave the XT and me a ride back to my van.Covered head to foot in road rash and the Yamaha no longer pristine I realized this day may better have been devoted to some other activity. :-X

Took a small jump and got thrown off the bike a bit. Gut reaction was to hold on tight with my hands and so i WFO'ed the throttle and slammed into a tree. :D
Only the front fender got hurt in that incident. I was lucky to jump off in the last second and the bike hit the tree right on the triple clamps.

At a race at Aztzlan in 97 on a NCY YZ125 95 Pedro Gonzolis supercross bike, supercross settings on shock, forks outdoor setup, no it didn,t handle right. The track is extremely competive, fastest riders in the midwest showup. In 125 b  with 44 racers, i,m in the top 10 , in a rythem section, cartwheeled the bike over the snow fence, and I blasted threw the fence. It was funny there was a excited kid there saying that was awesome, can I have your autograph. I laughed and just told him,let me finish the race 1st, then I,ll sign the broke rear fender for ya. At the RacerX vet race 9-11-11  they had 28 riders in 55plus, 60plus 13 riders, 50 plus expert 12 riders, 50 plus b,c 25 riders, that,s cool as hell that these older guys are banging bars yet. They also have 35 plus 125 class separate from the regular classes, redbud also has the same class this year. In 2010 0r 09 thet had 38 riders at Aztalan in 35plus 125 class. Ryan Hughs  was there this year, he raced 3 classes.

I'm and old dude, I was at a local mx track and was riding pretty well, for me anyway. Some of the young kids (15-17 yo) were impressed a -bit by an old dude getting around the track pretty well. After several laps I pulled off and up to the group of kids as I stopped I had my left foot down and my right still on my brand new footpegs( with good sharp teeth) I went to switch my feet and as I leaned the bike to the right and went to slide my right boot off the peg it hung up, so I slowly fell over and no matter how much I struggled I could not get my foot off that peg. They watched in disblief as I flopped over.
Needless to say they were no longer impressed. :o

At one of the riding areas friends and myself frequent there is a logging bridge over a creek and after the bridge the road forks. This makes it a natural place to stop and plan a days ride, get a drink etc. One day we stopped and one guy went to put his foot on the side rail to balance himself and missed!Over the edge he went with his RM close behind. Poor guy broke his arm! ???

Stupid; Me aged about 12 on my mates 1980 YZ 80 with no helmet, throttle stuck 3/4 open and instead of pulling in the clutch n stopping i bailed! Two stitches in me head and gravel stones in my hands! Plus a pretty bad concussion  :)

Embarrasing; Running out of fuel halfway down the start straight, first race!

I think you got those backwards. You should be EMBARRASED you were riding without a helmet AND that you paniced and bailed. It was just STUPID to run out of gas halfway down the start straight, first race!

I would have to say the one really stupid thing I did when I was 11 or 12 yrs. old & had a "81" rm-80 & I decided I was going up on the mountain to take a ride & on my way up I had to go through a couple alley ways to get on the mountain & needless to say I had to by-pass the junior high school I attended but I was'nt worried @ all about that because it was Summer time & I was on break, however on my way up I ran into a female friend standing outside of the school so I stopped to say hi & asked her if she wanted to take a ride up on the mountain with me? Her answer was no but @ least she asked me to stop up her aunts house later that evening because she had to babysit her nephew.Of course I told her I'd be there & I guess due to me being extremely excited about spending time with this girl that I had a major crush on I stupidly had to show off & I said to her "do you dare me to ride down the hill & onto the baseball field?"
There was a little league baseball game in progress so she told me that I did'nt have the balls to do that! I told her wrong answer & started my rm-80 up & took of down the hill towards the ball field & I rode a wheelie to the in-field & proceeded to ride around the in-field doing donuts & shooting roost all over the place! Next thing I know a couple off adults trying to watch the game got up from the bleachers & took off in their cars & one of the coaches ran up towards me & yelled that the police are on their way & told me I would be arrested! So I took off and rode up a street heading to the mountain & as I got to the gravel rode that takes me up on the mountain a City Police officer was flying towards me in his car with the lights on & thankfully I had a old style Scotts face mask & a old open face helmet so I know they did'nt know who I was I just had to worry about the girl who did know me & hope they did'nt go interogate her! Lucky for me I got up the gravel rode to a gate that's still there to this day & I had enough room on the right side to go around it so I made it around the locked gate & rode as far as I could up the mountain & hid up there until dark & then snuck down off the Mt. & locked & covered my rm-80 in the garage & went in my house to get cleaned up so I could walk up to the girls aunts house but by the time I got there her aunt was already home & asked me what in the heck am I doing at her house & I said as calmly as I could that I was looking for a buddy of mines house & I must have got the wrong address! She did'nt hardly believe me but @ least I ended up going back home & was very thankful that the PoPo did'nt catch me! After that fiasco I stayed off of my bike for about 4 months & then finally sold it to a friend & about a year & a half later I got a Suzuki 230 quadsport 4-choke four-wheeler! It was a total dog of a four-wheeler so I did'nt keep it very long............... :o  ???  :-X

Last fall I was going down a hill on my yz250 and probably doing about 50. Anyways, I looked backwards at something... so stupid of me :'( You know how they say that you turn the way you look? Well it doesnt work like that, I wish it did I would have been fine. But anyways, I was going down, looked backwards and didnt turn ENOUGH to avoid some waist high wooden poles on the side of the road. Needless to say I hit them... Just my foot and leg though, Thank God the bike was alright. In the end, I went to the hospital with an almost severed achilles tendon, and 15 stitckes, along with a million splinters on the leg that hit the pole. I was back on my bike in about two weeks though, lucky for me I wasnt out to long.  ;D

Sorry. I have to revive this thread.

So, last weekend was the last race of the year. I had just did a complete engine rebuild of my 1980 Can-Am MX6 400 (top and bottom) and was eager to see how much power I could squeeze out of it. The day dawned with drizzle and that boded well for me. The track had a new and considerably different layout than in the past and I hoped that my years of racing would be to my advantage searching for new lines as the track bedded in. It is very tight, great for the few 125's. I ran the whole practice (usually I just put in a couple of fast laps for qualifying) to get some groves going in the turns and test my lines. When the first moto came, I had qualified 5th fastest overall and 2nd MX1 (we run combined MX1 and MX2 classes). My start was poor but I made up quite a few positions after the first turn and looked to be in 5th place (2nd MX1). The next two guys were directly in front of me and I know I could get them and when I did, I started reeling in the MX 1 in front of me but stalled the motor in a turn and dropped back to 6th. Digging in and fighting harder, I got back to 3rd only to stall it again passing a lapper (a 125 no less!) and again dropped back to 7th. On the last lap, I passed 2 riders and was bumping the 4rd place rider in the last corner but couldn't get at the finish.

Not bad for breaking in the new motor I'd say and I was excited for the final moto. This would be my day. If I got a decent start and could beat the one MX1 in front of me, I'd win the day and might even be able to pressure the 250F that was running away with it.

My start was mid pack but by the 2nd turn, I was in 5th and had up to 2nd planned where the passes would take place. I made my move on the outside of the Kawasaki 250F in 4th but the engine bogged and I thought it would die! I fanned the clutch and we raced down the straight side by side but entering the next corner, the engine died. I kicked and kicked but nothing. I pulled the kill switch wire (my kill switch was in questionable condition) and still nothing. A spectator brought a plug and plug wrench, spark but no fire. I watched the checker flag come out and began the long push back to the pits. While waiting for stragglers to finish so as to cross the track, I just looked in the tank and...

There was no fuel.

Left a rag in my airbox the night before a race. Brand new 05 yz250. Next day at the track I had 5 different people try to start it, pulled it up and down the pits behind a quad. Changed the ignition, plug, cdi, had the whole bike apart almost but never seen the rag. I was so mad I went home. Took it to my mechanic the next day and was quickly called a dumbass  :P

On New Year's Eve (during the day before the drinking got started!) I had my son and daughter (he turned 4 that day and she will be 7 in Feb) out in our field working on teaching them to ride the PW50 and crf50 Santa brought them. My daughter decided she'd had enough and went inside so I hopped on her crf and played around a little bit. I spent most of my youth on bikes but haven't been on dirt in 10 years especially on a little toy 50. I start to get cocky thinking I can do whatever I did back then. Go out to the asphalt (No..I did not have a helmet on either. I should have went and got my street bike helmet). I then proceed to try riding wheelies on the 50. First attempt, got it up and held it for all of 2 feet then of course flipped backwards. Bike was nice and shiny with a new BBR graphics kit so my dumb as holds onto it so it wont get scratched (which it didn't!) and dropped ass-first on the asphalt. Broken tailbone! My son comes over and just says "You not supposed to ride on the street daddy it's dangerous".

Hahaha don't worry mate I did the same thing... Well I didn't take it to a mechanic but tore my old XR100R all the way down. Anyone who isn't completely biased knows these bikes are very reliable and I was confident it wouldn't just die like that. I ended up taking out the spark plug, cut a little bit off and rescrewed the cap, I changed the oil to check for metal shavings, attempted to clutch start it etc. Eventually I decided to strip it down to its bear metal and figure it out. This bike was half project and half fun for me at the time and I wouldn't normally touch the engine but as it happened I had previously bought a full repair manual for it so I was confident I would be fine. I was too.... But when I finally got the engine out I glimpsed at the rag firmly stuffed into the intake... I'm pretty sure I killed all the ants and mice in that shed with my language... As for stupid things I was doing wheelies in a dry paddock one time about a year ago and as people who have ridden in the more arid paddocks and country side of Australia know... Termites have a nasty habbit of building their massive mounds In the most inconvenient places possible. Anyway the grass was a decent length and the beige brown it goes in the dry times so I was quite suprised  to find myself leaving the comfortable seat of my bike and catching a brief glimpse of the silver handlebars as I was flung from the machine at a less then safe velocity... When I finally figured out that I was infact inhaling dirt and I got up (after several tries) The bike was infact by some miracle fine but I had a decent concussion.

A near death experience I had was getting highsided by my bike and was flung onto the ground. As I looked to my left because I wasn't hurt at all I noticed a starpickit about half a metre away from where I lay. Somebody out there must still like me cos I was in for a sucky death if I had come off just that little bit earlier.

Embarrassing things... Where to start xD stalling it over a jump at the track, and while taking off as I was still getting used to the bike. This was my old CRF250R dumper but anyway. I also had the smarts to wash the mud off my gloves before resuming riding one time.... You can imagine how much grip that gave me of my handlebars

haha me too, done that quite a few times with my 125, it doens't have enough power to shoot the plug out the back when i kick it over, so ive had many times where i just keep kicking until i check everything over and then notice the plug in the exhaust, then i bang my head on the bar pad and take the plug out kick it once and it fires lol

our 250 on the other hand will shoot the plug across the street when you kick it over with he plug in

Yeah mine to lol. I actually, no shit, hit the dog with mine. Poor bugger is lucky his ribs weren't fractured cos just for the fun of it, I put one of those heavy duty house moving boxes behind it. Took me 20 minutes to find the plug cos it blew right through it. I've really got to unfuck the jetting on my bike its dirtying plugs fast and being a slut to start.

My jetting is a bit off too, but it doesn't take much more to start than normal jetting, unless the engine is hot, then it takes a few kicks.

I took my plug out yesterday and cleaned it as thoroughly as humanly possible but its still not real flash. it just dirties up very quickly that plug couldn't be more then 10 riding hours old. Its a piece of piss to start once its warm but can take a fair few kicks otherwise

Do you mean its not sparking a nice bright blue? Because that could be something else other than a dirty plug.

When I take it out its just a filthy black color. I put some fuel in a lid of a jar or something and just dab it in and out, scrub it with a wire brush and repeat but it dirties up very quickly. I haven't actually looked at spark itself I plan on doing that when I get my new clutch cable

How long do you ride your plugs for before you take them out? I would've had about 5-10 hours on this one from brand new and it turned the fuel i had in the lid almost black. With a brand new plug in it, hot or cold it will kick up first time no worries. For every hour of riding on it, add an extra kick to get it started it seems. Im thinking this isnt normal
Title: Stupid Or embarrassing things you have done on a bike
Post by: cnrcpla on May 10, 2012, 02:49:52 PM
I ride 6 months before I take the plug out and test it. That's quite a few hours, unless I notice something that requires a plug chop or something. I wouldn't think that is normal for your bike though. Maybe try leaning out the jetting. Also, check your air/fuel screw. Start it at about 2 1/2 out from lightly seated and work from there.
Title: Stupid Or embarrassing things you have done on a bike
Post by: Stusmoke on May 11, 2012, 02:24:44 AM
I honestly don't know what im doing with the jetting so could you do me a massive favour and post up a little guide please? The logical place to start was drive the fuel/Air mixture screw all the way in and then go out from there but theres probably a smarter way  :P
Title: Stupid Or embarrassing things you have done on a bike
Post by: cnrcpla on May 11, 2012, 07:24:48 AM
Well start with the air/fuel mix screw. Turn it in to a lightly seated position, and then back it out about 2 1/2 turns. Run the bike for a little bit and then look at the plug. Here is a guide to plug chopping:
If the air/fuel screw doesn't fix it for you, then try the jetting. They are really cheap and easy to install, so buy a few sizes lean and try them all. Take the plug out and clean it between every plug test and compare your results to the picture above. Hope this helps  :)

my plug usually looks a little like a cross between The worn plug and carbon fouling. My choke operation is fine and its got a freshish air filter, so you're on the money haha. Thanks a bunch I'll get it done tomorrow. I've set aside this weekend for a major overhaul and tune up. I had a 2005 CRF250R that blew up so its in pieces and im putting the showa suspension onto my YZ for a couple of reasons all of which can be found: http://twostrokemotocross.com/forum/technical/problems-problems-problems-%28caused-by-my-lack-of-experience%29/

No problem  :) But if the electrode on the plug is worn like it looks like in the picture after only a few hours of riding, then there is an issue somewhere. The electrode should not wear down to that after a few hours hahaha

Well I went 2 turns in, and its never felt so good to ride that bike. Seriously not only am I getting a much harder hitting powerband everywhere, but its burning the fuel more efficiently and alot cleaner. The smoke is nothing like as thick, granted it doesn't smell quite as good but hey, the power and fun gains are godlike. Thanks mate. Oh by the way hows your YZ going after you got that cylinder back? yours is a 250 right?

The most recent stupid thing I have done was since my expansion chamber is out getting cleaned, I had a rag in the exhaust port. I was half asleep after work but I decided to do a spark test to see if I needed a new plug. I spun the engine over with my hand and the rag got caught between the piston and port. I forgot I put it there and I thought something in my engine seized, so I took the head off and was quite delighted to see the rag jammed in there...  :-[

Ye he's a mechanic by trade and used to race a maico 400 in the british championship when maico's were a relatively big brand, he just underestimated the speed that that cork could fly out of that exhaust

I did it again!!!!!

Got complacent today, had my 125 on the stella stand. Happily ratcheting away, got off my stool to get a 12 mil socket, thong caught on the lever of the stand. The bike plummeted, driving the handle of the stand square into my nuts.

Not. Effing. Cool. 5 minutes of groaning on the ground and dry retching. FML.
This has happened once before, except it was with my 2005 CRF250R. So an extra 15 KGs was even worse.

Also on todays list: tripped over aforementioned stella stand, over torqued a bolt and snapped it off, almost chopped my wang off with an angle grinder and dropped the ratchet on my already mangled toe.

And a happy new year to you all!

I had a YZ 400 1979 F model, it was more of a bike than I could handle but at 18 I thought I could handle anything, fast! A friend and were out trail riding in the forest trying to outdo each other, like you do. He went past on the back wheel up a long loose metal road so not to be outdone I went past him on the back wheel only I was in fourth now, you guessed it, over I went skidding up the road on my arse stones flying everywhere watching my 400 go end over end. Finally we all ended up together in a heap but the 400 was still at half throttle with its handle bar in the ground, middle of the road,  still in fourth going round and round in circles throwing stones at us. Kill switch had gone, what to do??? You try locking your throttle on half in fourth and let your bike go and see what happens, it's like a possessed monster with a mind of it's own, what to do???? So as it came round again I lept in on it thinking I I'll just pick it up, what was I thinking, all it did was wheel stand off leaving me on the ground with stones still getting thrown at me!! This time it when over the edge down a bank through the scrub mostly blackberry and gorse, now what to do??? If you have ever heard an air cooled 400 cc bike free revving at ???? revs it's not nice and all I wanted to do was shut it down before it exploded. So now we are standing on the side of the road looking down into the scrub, smoke rising, and an unholy noise coming up. I had no choice, It had lots of fuel on board, into the mess I went still not sure what to do I think a little shock had set in by this time thankfully it was up against a tree so as I picked the bike up this time I was able to run it into the tree and stall it. I must say it was all I could do to hold it there until it quit! Now finally the noise had stopped and in the silence all I could hear was my friend laughing, funniest thing he had ever seen. After I stopped shaking I had to laugh also, you know I had had problems with the throttle sticking some weeks earlier, something you probably want to sort out on a 400 cc twostroke sooner rather than like me, later.

Back around 1980 or so I had a RM250. Decided it needed more power and bought a 38MM carb for it (don't remember where I got the idea that this was the hot ticket). Managed to install it the night before race day but didn't have time to do much testing/jetting.

Drove to the track the next AM. Unloaded the bike and when practice started I kicked it over and rode over to the start line. Even doing this it seemed like it wasn't running quite right. I ended up doing a couple of laps and was amazed at the power gain. What I failed to recognize at the time was that instead of adding power it actually just removed what little low end and midrange that RM had. The hit was now so pronounced that it *felt* like a rocket ship. Those practice laps -- I am sure -- were some of the slowest laps that day.

So I decide to do a couple of starts to make sure I can "handle all this power". Line up, rev it up, feed the clutch and LOOP. Instantly. It was then that I decided that the half baked carb swap was probably not the hot ticket. The engine, on the other hand, was quite hot given how lean it was running.

Packed it up for the day and put the stock carb on it back at home.

I still have that 38mm on a shelf somewhere. A whole 30 minutes of run time on it.

Back in the early 80's (very early) was out trail riding with some buddies. I had a mazda rotary and a 3 rail trailer to get us to the national forest near where I was going to school. We had a great day riding, my new bell moto 3 helmet was finally starting break in (I think this was its 2nd or 3rd outing).

Anyway, we return to my "rig", have a snack and some gatoraid and load up the bikes.

We then get in the car and start driving. There is a short sandy dirt road followed by a two lane blacktop. I make the left turn on to the blacktop and floor the rotary (that car was pretty speedy).

We hear a "bump bump bump" from up on the roof of the car.

I look into the rear view mirror in time to see my Moto3 roll down the backside of the car and disappear behind the trunk.

Then the trailer "jumps" off the ground and the axle rolls over my new helmet at 30+ mph. My buddies are laughing their asses off!

I stop, turn around and retrive the brain bucket. I was so disgusted I heaved it into the field next to me and drove off.

Idiot. I should have kept it. As smashed and gouged as it was I could have come up with some amazing bench race stories for it if I still had it!  ;D

Yes we all do this sort of thing some time or other.  This one I'm almost too ashamed to relate!!
Just recent, bought a new truck, diesel. First diesel I've owned, salesman said " DO NOT PUT PETROL IN IT" . Off we go to the trail ride, stop to get fuel. I'm half asleep and end up filling not only the truck with Diesel but also the bike fuel drum. At the ride my bike has fuel already so I'm off only to get back to find my apprentice having real trouble starting his bike ( fourstroke ). I'm thinking useless  fourstrokes until I go to mix my own fuel and thought that smells odd??? The apprentice was not very happy with me to say the least. I made him keep it to himself for fear of no job!!!
Yes I've backed over a helmet before, just glad no one's head was in it at the time.

I am waiting (hopefully a good long time) before I pump gas into my F250PSD -- a mistake that will cost lots of $$$$ when it happens.

A friend of a friend bought a diesel truck years ago. He works as an airplane mechanic for a construction company to service their biz jets. Every now and then you have to inspect the fuel tanks so they drain the remaining fuel into 55 gallon drums. This stuff is kerosene thinks the guy, why not run it in my truck? He calls FORD to see if they will revoke the warranty if he puts jet fuel in his pickup.

They said "go for it"    :o

I made keep it to himself for fear of no job!!!
Yes I've backed over a helmet before, just glad no one's head was in it at the time.

All our diesel powered ground equipment run on JetA, works great as heating oil too.

I run my diesels on processed deep fryer oil, runs great and smells like fish and chips. I've heard of guys using used ATF from transmission shops.

I was 17 or so and riding an ancient (but nice) Bultaco my father had picked up cheap from a co worker. We were riding down this winding, heavily treed connector fire road and I was taking it really easy because the old Bul had wet brakes. I had just rounded  a corner when I saw this kid flying toward me on a Suzuki! He was looking back to see how badly he was smoking the old man, I veered right to try and avoid him but he still clipped my handlebars, sending me off the road and down this steep bank. The Bul hit a huge rock at the base of the bank, the forks bottomed kicking the back of the bike (and me) high in the air. I  did a perfect back flip landing on my feet in dense underbrush! I still recall standing there wondering what had just happened while my friends called my name as they tried to find me.  ;D

The crapiest part of that story, is that your friends didn't see the backflip you landed :D

What happened to the kid on the zook?

i was testing R1 superbike the day before i was due to fly out and race a GSXR 1000 in the Chinese endurance championship , i had done about 10 laps and when i felt the rear pads hit metal so pulled in . i had pulled it up on the back wheel come into pit road and had gone about 150 yards when i ran over a water grate , it went over the balance point i tapped the rear brake to get it down but there was none so it spat me straight off the back then cartwheeled down the pit road unit it hit a concrete pole , smashed the front wheel , bent the forks ripped off the end can destroyed the fairings . it was an expensive wheelie  :(

one of the guys at the race school got it all on film :-}} he was a canadian guy and it made one of there video's . they made DVD's like jackarse or nitro circus type deal  it was about 9-10 years ago

I guess the winning bonus went towards repairing the Yammie instead haha :D

While we're on the topic, what are the limits for motoGP engines? As in how many can you go through a season?

Moto GP can have 6 engines for the season
CRT bikes get 12 thats why the ART Aprilia engine puts out 15-20 less Hp than the WSBK bikes last year Aprilia went through 36 engines in WSBK and Kawasaki went through 32 , they are looking at the rules now trying to put a limit on wsbk engine numbers as is has got out right silly as far as money goes

I'm sorry I don't know anything about motoGP what is WSBK? But 36 freaking engines? That would have to be four stroke right? That could end up being over 300 thousand dollars depending on the number of cylinders  :o

WSBK Is world Super bike they race 1000cc and they are bloody expensive .

I have a Honda CBR 1000 that engine was 10,000 pounds to build , I just had it freshened up it cost me 3,500 pounds plus shipping from Asia to the uk to have it done , it puts out 190 Hp at the rear wheel I get 1 season of riding out of that I only ride it at Sepang about 15-20 days a year ,  the bikes in WSBK. Are putting out over 220 Hp at the back wheel they use an engine every race .

MX is so much fun a free compared to riding Superbikes 2 days riding will cost me about 1000 dollars all up with tires , track time , fuel etc etc

Next year they will have 5 engines for a season. Geez Shane a fellow here self tuned his ZXR10 got 194 at the wheel, big powerful bikes eat tyres and chains. Ducati's are worse for longevity

That, dear sir, is F**KING RIDICULOUS!

How the hell is anyone meant to do that? Even when it was two strokes, it was still expensive with all those cylinders. But what the f********k man thats crazy money! I wish the factory teams would send some of it my way :D

Indeed! Lets just say I've found some disturbing things in the mx park's pond... And bathroom stalls.

What was I doing in the pond I hear you wonder? Lets just say even the best riders in the world sometimes leave their bike pinned through a rut, don't lean enough and get high sided into the local water feature.
