Title: Robby Marshal's Lap Times
Post by: citabjockey on May 31, 2013, 02:45:58 PM
in the first round of qualifying Robby's shortest lap was 2:27. The fastest guys out there seem to be in the 2:07 to 2:10 range. Hope that's enough for the show!

Their other guy Mike Sottile wasn't on pace, he will have to race his way in.

Top 4.  Timed qualifying fills 36 gates, the LCQ fills the final 4.  So he will need a good start, he'll be up against 30+ guys.

What a bummer.  He was running near the top 20 on lap 1 and landed on Canard's downed bike.  Early report is a separated shoulder, so his day and season could be done if he needs surgery to repair it.

No shortage of bad luck on these two stroke national projects. But I think qualifying today was better than anything from the first effort a couple of years ago.

I hope it not eitheir the guy did great and when I see that he qualified ahead of Chad reed and Jake weimer it's pretty cool. Well if he is out for the remainder there are a lot of good riders available, Seeing that the economy sucks.Well the TSM guys have put in great effort and I'm sure that they'll be able to pickup some very good riders especially after showing the the Bikes are the real deal.

Watching the race right now, before the start they gave a "shout out" to Robbie and mentioned him qualifying on a 2 stroke and about 2/3 the way through the race they mentioned him qualifying 16th on a 2 stroke ahead of Stewart, Reed and Weimer   :)  :D  ;D

... Emig should slap himself! Hope you guys can get a solid rider to jump in for him.

Did you mean to type, "get a solid announcer to jump in for him"?

WAIT.  You meant Marshall.  Nevermind.  Sorry.

Depends on the degree of the separation.  Often the pain will go away in a few weeks but it can cause long term problems.  Usually without an operation to close the joint back up it will pop back out of place when stressed.

So I feel I MUST step in here.

The Flagger: The flagger on the jump is waiving the yellow. Pretty vigorously I might add. He is definately not just standing there picking his ass. That means (for all you non-racers out there) THAT YOU DO NOT JUMP THE OBSTICLE. It is in the rules and grounds for disqualification/elimination from the event. I don't care what everyone else is doing. The AMA, event promotors, and riders are all at fault and should step up and correct the problem by ENFORCING THE RULES!!!.

This is getting ridiculous. When we talked about the kids race at the Moster Energy Cup, we had the same thing. A BLATENT DISREGUARD FOR THE SAFETY OF THE RIDERS.

Now I couldn't see in the video if the turn before the jump was a yellow or not and that should have been the case but regardless, when a flagger has a waving yellow at a jump, the rule isn't jump at your own peril, the rule is DO NOT JUMP THE Mo$&er F&@^ing OBSTICLE!

Robby, dude. Get well soon. You are our hero and we all hope the best for you.

The jetting issue was more of a fuel issue, which we got resolved shortly before the 2nd practcie session.
The Smart carb was not run at Muddy Creek, we have done a little testing with it, more coming soon.

It is hard to argue with Larry63r's post.

Having flagged pro events (Daytona, St. Louis, and others) that was not the case 'in my day'. Yellow was always "wheels down" and no passing. Flaggers and flag stations rarely have more than a blue and yellow flag (and more often than not - no blue!).

I was one of those guys that would jump out on the track to protect the rider and ponited and waved like crazy. I was landed on in St. Louis during one of the LCQ's. Although I do it, I don't expect others to be so stupid and I expect there are insurance liabilities for the track owners/promoters as well. The flagger was on or next to the jump, in plain sight of the on coming riders waving the yellow flag. Although he ain't a "super flagger", he was doing his job.

Coop said,
Quote
Riders at the pro level are extremely focused, a flagger needs to do something to get their attention.
but my response to that is that BECAUSE they are at the pro level, they see EVERYTHING in view. It is that kind of focus that allows them to go so fast, see lines developing, and reacting to changing situations. Look at Bubba withthe photographer last year (or me with the photgrapher this year - I empathise with Bubba for that one). They saw that flagger and decided "I'll keep it pinned and make up a few seconds on anyone who lets off" or " If I let off and be safe, I'll get passed and the organizers will not defend me and give me my position back".

I commend Robby for "trying" to do the right thing and hope for a speedy recovery - but this is a PERFECT opportunity to drill home some basic riding skills anda safety - and the idiots in the booth missed it completely!

Well pulp is not taking a shot at Robbie but at TSM, They see and know how popular the website has become which means they believe they are losing advertising dollars and revenue and any clout they think they have.I hope TSM buries them.

You're right, they just want some of the traffic coming their way. We'll just keep going and show then it's not a fluke or cheating. We have some great low double digit riders asking to ride. We're making the call for the 3rd rider soon. But I promise you, we'll have at least a top 10-15 this year. :)

Can one of the mods please rename this thread? My original post was based on session 1 practice (with bad jetting and getting to know the track). Ever since session 2 I have regretted the title and it really pokes me in the eye now knowing how fantastic Robby was doing on the SX up until he hit the bear trap left by Canard in moto 1.

Thanks!

We have some great low double digit riders asking to ride.

Which just goes to show what a great job you guys have done in a short period of time.Good stuff Charles and crew. 8)

It also makes you wonder how many riders are now looking at a 250 2t as a viable option due in large part to the TSM effort.
The next couple months should be very interesting.

Charles - you have done a herculean sales job -- going toe to toe against the four stroke oligarchy.  An amazingly heavy lift. Congrats on the success to date and best wishes for the news to come. KtmTalk and Vital both have lots of posting against RM82's (and his bike's) accomplishments. Better publicity I would think is tough to come by.

Warms my heart.

Thanks!

Charles,

I know you have better things to do but I'd be VERY interested in your preparations for this endevour. I noticed you tore the bikes down to the frames and had them recoated. Was there a specific reason for that (gusseting, xray etc) or did you just want a different color. I wouldn't want to get any trade secrets for free but some of the changes - especially to the KTM's would do wonders for your fans. It would suffice it to say "send the head to Cycle Playground because they proved their worth" or "We decided on Talon hubs because not only did thy make the bike look sick and were free but actually shaved a couple ounces off". It would also be good to hear the stories of licensing and entries to the series. Most non-Pro riders don't know the half of it!

Maybe an interview of YOU, by one of US. Now that would be cool!

I have no problem with that and I would love to share details about the entire effort with you guys. It's tough doing everything by myself and time is hard to come by right now. Hopefully I can get something up in the off week after high point this weekend, between testing/tuning sessions.
A few quick answers:

We had the frames Powder coated, and a little foam fill for damping. Swapped the metal T coolant fitting with a single piece silicone unit. (The stock coolant T is the ONLY part I didn't like on the KTM's). It just looked like it belongs in plumbing section at Lowe's, 3 piece threaded pipe and T fitting. I'm much more comfortable with the single silicone T.

Cycle Playground does have a great reputation with KTM's, we have been dealing with them for a while. Having them help wrench at the races is a huge added bonus.
For the motors we went with a broad powerband, built for reliability. (There is still plenty of power to squeeze out if we wanted/needed it.) Doesn't look like we do ;)
Case clean up, matching, intake/exhaust porting, altered port timing and a re-cut bowl is about as far as the motor work has gone. The PWK has a 37x39 oval bore.
All bikes are built the same, except Robby's has the Factory WP A kit. The rest have some goodies inside but not like the 82.

The wheels are for looks, but also much stronger than the stockers. (And they weren't free) :)

We are using the DT1 aluminum filter cages, which we HIGHLY recommend for the KTM owners. They seal much better and offer great piece of mind. I know I have read some issues with the KTM stock plastic design sucking dirt if not installed correctly.  Feel free to ask anything you would like to know and I'll answer as I can.

I finished freshening them up for High Point last night, heading out to do some testing/tuning/filming with Robert Kraft here in a bit. We'll have some GoPro/Video and pics coming.

Everyone that has twisted the grip on these bikes gives the same reaction.. Fast and Fun. That's what it's all about right? :)

Sottile is out, racing his 450. His father told me he wasn't riding for us.

Would have been nice if he told you that before you had graphics printed with his name/number for Muddy Creek. Oh well, move on and move forward! That just meas there is a spot open for a fast guy that wants to ride for team TSM!

Oh, but then KTM four stroke sales would plummet.

Conversly, if Dungy was left in 20th place or worse, didn't make the grid, 2-stroke sales would plummet...

That would suck for everybody!

Upside fo Charles' strategy -- pretty good.
Downside to cCharles' strategy -- not much at all.

Upside  to Dungy strategy -- even better.
Downside to Dungy strategy -- catastrophic.

you are quite correct.

Think of all the press KTM would get if that actually happened -- even if Roger D himself threw a two stroke under him. If he podiumed on the bike in the 450 class.... Even if he got into the top 5! The buzz would be amazing in the moto-sphere. KTM would be a household word (well, a household random 3 letter combo) in the general public!

Oh, but then KTM four stroke sales would plummet.

Yes, dreaming......   ::)

Dungy? I think he is used to KTM hardware....   :o

Sure I think Roger and the rest of the crew will allow him to cross over to the dark side...

Cita you are a dreamer...   :o

Business strategy is a bitch hey.  >:( Can't blame them really. But they've got an awesome little spot in the market. Their four strokes sell well and their two strokes just as well. They'll do what all the japs will: Milk the four stroke market dry. I would too :D
