i picked up a 83 yz 100 was told it just had a top end rebuild. I was riding around a sand pit and it started to slowly lose power eventually just bogged out. im thinking maybe need a new piston or rod etc. any ideas would be greatly appreiciated.

Check the compression.

Check the compression.
and then if the compressions low, off with the top end

The pressure is Basically gone. I pulled the top end off one of the gaskets were pretty worn out , a dowel was missing, the piston looks scored and the engine was making a rattling sound before it shut off.

So the top end wasn't just done? It's amazing how many ads claim a fresh top end

Exactly got to love people .
