A few years back I built a vintage bike... after being away from racing for many years. It was started as a fun low-budget project and slowly turned out quite a bit different!!

Here are some photos of the bike (which was just sold)

I just noticed something whilst looking at the 4th picture of John's Yamaha.  Look at the Primary Ratio on that thing!  The front gear is tiny, while the clutch basket looks to be (appropriately) the size of a basketball!  Looking at that, I imagine you could rev the bike up to nine grand and still watch each individual gear tooth in the transmission as it went around.  Crazy.

I'm used to looking at Maico equipment, which has a much more mild ratio, resulting in a fast-spinning transmission.  They did this so that the RPM in the transmission would be higher, and thus the torque would be lower, allowing them to use a clutch you might expect to see on a 100cc trail bike, rather than one of those big monsters you get on a CR or similar.  That's why they could get away with such small cases; everything inside was small and fast.

Here is my 1974 Honda CR250M.  I bought it new in 74, and sold it in 2004. Check out my "trick" stand...  When I pulled the bike out of storage, (15 years worth), it fired up with the old nasty gas..  it ran but not well...  I replaced the carb, and added an after market exhaust.  When I was young, I re-ringed the bike twice, so it still had the original piston...  until I was racing my son on his YZ125, and I cooked the piston...  so a 2 over bore, new piston and rings, and all was well.  I sold it to a local gentleman who wanted to race in the vintage class as I was ready for some modern suspension...

Cripes, most of you guys' bikes I'd have sitting in my living room :o

I'm not sure if this qualifies but it came to me in boxes with some parts missing, most rusty, and the rest seized.Still,it was just a fun little winter project and I wanted my daughter to have a two stroke and not a dime a dozen z50.Something you don't see too often anyway.78 jr50

I must have missed this thread the first time around,
some very nice rides!  Kind of like a vintage eye
candy store.

Here are some pictures of my two vintage Hondas.
These were the first two bikes I had ever restored
starting with the '73.

It's amazing how much change was made in such a short time.  The amount of time that separates those two bikes is similar to the amount of time separating identical modern YZs.  Just imagine what would happen if such rapid development today.  We'd be using tires with magnets instead of air pressure!

Even though one is a 73 and the other is a 79, you could argue that they could represent a 1976 and 1978 at least in looks and height, so its really only 2 years apart.

Well, maybe in Honda Land that's true.  But I can name at least one factory that had just about doubled its suspension travel by the time the 1976 model year came about.  For fairness, I should mention that this same company was a few inches behind the leaders by 1979.

Sure, but thats what the original comment was looking at.

This is a 76 I had like 20 years ago, before I got it running.

The bike was actually submerged and the crank case was full of mud.  I used a garden hose to clean it out.  The points were bad but I drilled holes into a magneto + CDI unit from a 1981 CR250 and bolted it on.  It did some nasty kick back sometimes, but it actually ran, timing was prolly a tad bit advanced from what it should have been.  We painted the frame flouresent orange.  Bent back shock, bent rim, dry rot front tires and no breaks.  I took that thing wide open 5th gear down the road, rear tire wobbling all over the place.  Then I sold it for $200 because the crank bearings were pretty bad in it and the front sprocket was welded on.

Anyhow, here's anoter vintage bike.

Can't say I've ever seen yellow like that on the fenders.  But like I've said before, everything I've heard says the '86 is a winner in the performance department.  "It will stay with anyone, on any bike, on any road or trail, on any day, anytime of the year" is a rough paraphrase.  That's an exaggeration, of course, because there are people on this planet that can take a Harley Davidson and tear people up in places you'd never think possible.  But still, it obviously made an impression.

The fenders are essentially custom.  I bought the bike from DC Plastics, they basically riveted a cut out of a yellow fender over top of the red fender.
