Got a spanking good deal with a 98 kdx 200 ($800) with fresh tires. I rode it for a short bit, and I'm hooked.
My first bike since my KX100, stoked. I will post more pics after I clean it up.
-
One of those would be handy in my garage this Spring! ;D
-
Exactly. Man, I wish this guy cleaned this bike a bit more, filthy. :'(
-
GRRR, POS cross threaded one of the bolts that thread into tank, its just spinning. Any ideas?
Neve rmind, answered my own question.
-
is it just the bolt spinning, or the brass insert??
-
Awesome! Another KDX :D .
-
is it just the bolt spinning, or the brass insert??
Brass insert. And now (I am glad I caught it), the lower linkage bearing where the shock mounts to is fried, and has slop. At least thats a cheap fix.
-
That's the same price we paid for my '82 Husky, though it was in rougher shape than that Kawasaki. It didn't like to run unless you were really hammering it. Once we got it all sorted out, though, it's proven to be a lot of bike for the money. I mean, $800 isn't very much at all, and to get anything 200cc or more and two-stroke in passable condition, the fun-to-dollar ratio is going to be excellent.
-
Exactly jetz, even though the bike is still not ready to ride with the linkage completely destroyed... >:( It will be fun to ride with out having to spend a ton of money in the process. I will probably go to a 125 chassis or move to a 250 after I get used to riding bikes.
-
Looks nice and clean for the price. You sure it's a 98? I didn't think 98 came with a purple tank.
-
I wondered about the purple tank too. I knew the KX's didn't have it in '98 but I wasn't sure about KDX. I seem to remember them having the purple longer than the KX's. The VIN is easy to decode to know for sure.
RockyMountain ATV is about the cheapest places I found for the linkage bearings. I priced them and the swingarm bearings in case mine needed them, but it was good to go for now. Mine needed fork seals, which I am finally getting around to doing now.
I got my 2003 for $1000, but it was a friend of a friend deal.
-
"Brass insert."
I had that problem with my stock yamaha tank, here's what I did
I carefully cut into the plastic immediately around the insert with an exacto knife to free the insert.
right at the edge of the brass, then I cleaned up the hole with a round file. used JBweld two part to glue it back in. i applied the JBweld to the insert first, then some to the walls of the hole in the tank
If the insert is cross threaded, clamp it in a vise, and try to re-tap it, if it's really fried, drill it out and tap it the next size up.
Do this before you glue it back in. Also you might want to file a mm or two off of the back of the insert before glueing it in so it sets flush, also liberally apply some grease to a bolt, not the one you plan to use, and thread it into the insert before you glue in to keep the glue from filling in the bottom of the bolt hole. let it cure, take out the bolt. install shrouds, good luck
-
You can also use a soldering iron to free the insert. A little easier than cutting. My old KX125 had a stripped insert and I fixed it almost exactly like Myck said, only I used the soldering iron to free the insert.
-
So small update, The pro circuit silencer was trash so I decided it was time for another one.
;D see jetz, its not hard to make something work...
-
I am aware of this. :D
(http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/JETZcorp/DSC02448.jpg)
-
This is not looking good. :-X
-
I just need a linkage arm, side panels, and possibly bars. But it really isn't in that bad of shape, idiot simply forgot to check something, and he ruined a part by not doing so.
-
Well the linkage bearings are a common problem area on KDX's.
-
I take it because their not sealed right?
-
I don't for sure why. But on kdxrider it is a common topic.
-
Yes it is, I am currently looking at the countless threads of what water proof grease to use. ::)
-
might as well post how I got my bike home:
-
Yes it is, I am currently looking at the countless threads of what water proof grease to use. ::)
I use BRP triple Guard marine water proof grease in all my linkages.
Out of all the greases I have tried over the years on boat systems it has better water proofing then anything else.
As long as your seals are good it will last very well in linkages.
-
sounds good. However, the next linkage piece I get I am probably going to tap grease zerks in.

Another good Canadian product-can't go wrong there :D
As for the price you paid for the bike and what's wrong with it,given that our dollar is about on par with yours,it never ceases to amaze me how much you guys get for so few bucks.Around here, what you paid would get the same thing-with a wasted engine or just an engine alone with nothing else.
-
thats whats funny about Canada, if I where to simply take a crap load of bikes up north I would make a killing. And whats even more funny, is that for the price I paid for it I should have got a decent trail bike that needed nothing except maybe an oil change, or a rear tire. I was debating over this bike or two different 03 kx125's in portland/eugene for $1000.
http://eugene.craigslist.org/mcy/2147290412.html (http://eugene.craigslist.org/mcy/2147290412.html)
The one in portland is gone.

I'd like to go down with a wad of cash I don't have and smuggle some back.Take a few minutes and have a look........

Scroll down to the bottom and theres lots more pages.
-
there are some decent deals in there, but some ridiculous prices. It looks like prices have dropped somewhat.
-
Prices drop here in the winter time when no ones buying but come spring they get jacked up.Many don't even bother to post their bikes in the winter time.
I assume it must be a supply/demand thing given many Americans have a much longer riding season and 10x the population the prices are lower-maybe
-
well, I wouldn't say that, there are plenty of people who don't get it.
1991 kx250 $1500
1982 yz250 $1200
1988 kdx 200 $800
1999 cr250 $2200
-
That's true to a point but most here that seem reasonably priced and are in "mint" condition turn out to be roached basket cases.I looked at one that way once and the engine was locked up.When I said-How the H is that mint?He said it was fairly mint other than that ::)
-
I've met few people like that here.
-
It never ceases to amaze me how/why people do that.To me,mint is new. When I sold my Berg,it was immaculate and needed absolutely nothing-and I said so,but wouldn't call it "mint" as it had some plastic scratches and what not. Some people are retarded.
-
it gets worse in the cities, and the best deals are on the 100 mile trips...
-
Had to drive over to Mobile, Alabama to get these. $2400 for the pair, w/ full sets of extra plastic, 3 airfilters each, 3 boxes of plugs, a stock 14" rear rim, brand new front and rear springs for the RM85 for a 150lb rider, two pairs of boots, 8 tubes, and a bunch of other nick knacks. They had both just been in the shop, he pulled up at the house as I was with them in the truck, to have ALL the fluids and rings replaced, I also know a guy at that shop that confirmed it. Both have been revalved by Pro-Action, and the RM85 is armed to the teeth w/ aftermarket stuff.
-
here's the other
-
This is what happens when boys start liking girls.
-
you are correct sir.
-
the funny thing is that boys quit riding to chase girls, girls like boys that ride, boy turns into poser, girl goes after boy at local track.
-
exactly. Why you don't see chicks at enduro events.
-
they're there, just in a camper keeping some other guy warm. Sometimes they bring thier girlfriends, but that usually just causes trouble
-
exactly. Why you don't see chicks at enduro events.
You do around here.Unfortunately they are usually wives who would sooner be anywhere but there :(
-
When I started out riding enduro events there was a girl beating all the guys. She rode a Husky and was over 6 ft. tall (and she was blonde). ::)
-
Pics?In gear-or just riding boots :)
-
When I said-How the H is that mint?He said it was fairly mint other than that
ya, I've seen ads taht were like "Bike runs GREAT, excellecent very fast bike. Doesn't have piston. Can only imagine the power it would have with a new piston!"
I saw an ad exactly like that on craigs list once.
-

HAHAHAHAHAHA
-
damn, I almost had a lead 125 roller. :'(
-
There is a kid on a local for sale site that keeps posting a 1991 CR125 for $550. "Excellent condition, runs great. Just needs two things. Rings and second gear." I bet it would be "super excellent" if it didn't just need those two things...
-
Its like it doesn't matter that it doesn't run, its still a fast bike to them.
-
awesome, if all goes well I should have linkage by sometime next week.
-
I saw you on kdxr wheeling and dealing :) .
-
fo sho! $35 shipped is legit. I can't wait to go ride.
On a side note, I called up a local shop and ask for oem prices on linkage bearings, and this is what he said: "F%*!, their $14 a bearing! Just go to the local Bearing shop and spend $15 on all six." ;D
-
Sh#t I coulda told ya that
-
;D
-
Suzuki is bad for having odd ball bearing sizes - no buying them from the bearing dealership.
-
I hope its not the same for kawi.
-
Please lord, let me find a 03 and up kx125 roller for cheap, and I swear I will never touch a Honda again.
-
good luck w that. you'll have better luck finding a blown up 250f,
-
The 250f roller would be a great idea if there were any in my area let alone state. o-well, the waiting game it is.
-
I have been looking for a cheap roller (125 or 250) since I first bought my KDX. I don't care what brand. In fact a guy on kdxr used a CR and I thought that was cool because with the red plastic it was like a retro KDX hybrid haha. Does anyone remember the red KDX's from the mid 80's?
There are a couple guys over there that used 250f chassis. One of the nicest I've seen was with an RMZ.
-
The rmz one was nice, but you can't beat the simple fab work with 03 and up kx125.
-
The problem (for me) with the 03 and up is I am not set up to weld aluminum. I can only weld steel here in my garage.
-
Looks like steel to me, they use an aluminum sub frame? Here is specs on a 05:
http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/kawasaki_kx_125_2005.php (http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/kawasaki_kx_125_2005.php)
-
Correct me if I am wrong but the KDX200 motor is smaller then a 250F powerplant so if the swingarm matched up you just have to fab up some front engine mount plates? Didn't somebody make 240 kits for KDX200s as well?
-
yes, and thats why they can fit cr500 motors in there, however, the only issue is that you have to cut and weld in a Y piece on the frames. All you have to do for a 03 and up kx125, is cut the swing arm so the motor fits, either shim the swing arm so that kdx swing arm bolt fits, or drill out the cases so the larger KX125 bolt fits, and cut and weld in new motor mounts. :o 2002 and lower had issues with the gas tank hitting the head and you would have to cut the rear head stay and mold the tank inward with a heat gun. Now with 03 I have seen people cut the front head stay and others that leave it, so i am confused. lol

Yeah for some reason I had it stuck in my head the 03+ had an aluminum frame. Doh!

Small update: Just waiting on "Uni-track" to show up, Trx250r FMF Q silencer successfully installed(see bottom of page one), Installed Pro Taper Pillow top grips, and Cleaned/oiled the air filter.
Things to do: clean the carb, buy a new air filter(Twin Air filter?), head pipe seal, possibly new side panels, buy new chain after few rides, and grease bearings.
Very sad news at kdxrider.net(R.I.P Indawoods).
-
No_toil and moose both make nice airfilters
-
Very sad news at kdxrider.net(R.I.P Indawoods).
Yeah definitely a shocker, 47 and dead from a heart attack. Very sad.
It's funny Myck mentioned No-Toil. Every time I suggest them (because I can get them cheap) people bash me and say they are junk. I do like Twin Air a lot, but I can buy two NT's for the cost of 1 Twin Air. I like to have 2-3 filters so I can easily swap them out and always keep a clean filter in the bike.
-
I might buy a K&N, but idk. I saw no-toil at local mx shop, I might give them a shot.
-
I am not a K&N fan for dirtbikes. You need to ensure you clean your filter often when dirt riding and K&N's are a hassle to me to clean.
-
thats why you buy a screen or outer wear.
-
You still have to clean them often. That filter skin only helps a little. I have used them.
-
true, o-well the oem filter will have to do for right now. That was the dirtiest air filter/air box I have ever seen. Looks new as of now.
-
I use the pre oiled no-toil filters now, I've been using the No-Toil filter cleaner and oil for 10 years on twin airs, Moose, and some maxim ready filters a couple years ago, the twin airs gave me less than a year life span switching every week, short lived for a $25 filter. The ready filters lasted two cleanings. The Moose filters are still in good shape a year of cleanings every other weekend. I have a sponsorship w no toil so I got a couple of filters for my bike this year.
Funny thing, the look exactly like the Moose filters but with a No-Toil logo.
-
Ride ready, woot. :P Rode up and down the street, and its awesome. Now to make it street legal..
-

Another bad pic, will get a better one tomorrow.
-
It's looking good.
-
I'm not sure but I think somebody spiked the punch.
lol
-
We'll need some videos (on trails of course) of the scoot in action! ;D P.S. Looking good!
-
Have a helmet cam for such an event. ;D
-
Well riding was blast and I don't think I need another quad or trike. Helmet cam died while I was riding so I will see what it got.
Lame, ran all of 3 seconds.

Only issue while riding is the clutch getting stuck and won't release sometimes, mainly when it was warmed up completely. Will fix it before next ride.
-
Looks good. Any other symptoms with that clutch issue?
-
well, it acts like the clutch lever is not pulling hard enough? Probably notches in the clutch basket. I will adjust the cable and see if that works, if not will pull it apart to see whats going on. The bike sat for more than a year after idiot wrecked and broke a few ribs. I am so done with quads and trikes after today.
-
I had the same problem with my RM.
Changed brand of tranny oil and was fine.
How old is the oil ?
-
idk ;D Looked fresh, but I will change it before next ride.
-
I am so done with quads and trikes after today.
Lol :D Looking good 8)
-
idk ;D Looked fresh, but I will change it before next ride.
Haha, always start there. The first thing I do when I buy a bike is change the oil so I know it has the right stuff, I don't care if the seller said they just changed it.
I'm happy to hear you are staying with bikes now. :)
-
definitely change all the fluids in any used bike, chances are that it still has the stock fork oil. :o
oil breaks down over time especially without use, condesation in the cases occurs and with out running the heat from the motor doesn't evaporate the water and the oil becomes contaminated.
Check the cable too, there might be a kink in it somewhere, then lube the crap out of it, lever pivot, and even the ball on the clevis.
I also noticed from your photos, that you are a rather big fella. :D
Springs should be your next investment. When changing the fork springs change the fluid and use a heavier fluid this will help the action considerably without revalving.
If it were me and have the $$$ at the time I'd get the whole set overhauled and Gold Valved with the proper spring rates. Race Tech is the place to go for all that. the kits are easy enough to install by yourself. but with the amount of wear on the rest of the bike I'd just send it off.
I know a guy here in Pensacola great dude, great work, fairly quick turn around. He did my buddy's KDX up w gold valves, springs and and a complete rebuild for $500.
man let me tell you, after I rode my buddys bike with the suspension work, I was very dissapointed with myself for buying the KX250, when there was a brand new KDX sitting next to it, , I had no idea how good it could be. ::)
Oh well.
-
I'm only 5'10, ;D as for the suspension $500 is a hell of a deal. However, if I don't end up doing a hybrid, I think buying a set of kx125/250/500 kxf250/450 forks would be a better deal to work with as it would update the bike completely . The other idea is to ride it a bit more and get a 250 and keep the kdx for a trail bike.
-
I was very dissapointed with myself for buying the KX250
That's a common sentiment. :P ;)
-
lol
-
key word "WAS" :D
very much satisfied with my decision now.
-
Dope bike.
Changed tranny fluid, will see if it fixed the problem this weekend.
-
Went riding again today put in about 10.7 miles, still having some clutch issues. However, it is not as bad as before, so I believe the fluid change helped.
As for suspension, the forks feel great, and the rear shock sucks.
-
On my '03 I feel the opposite. My forks are way too soft but the shock feels pretty good. I have the forks off for new seals and I will go with some heavier oil. i can't afford new springs right now.
-
either way I'm simply stoked that I don't have to do much.
-
That out in bend desert?
-
Yep. This was out at china hat where there are a bunch of small riding areas/trails, but this is small compared to east fort rock which is up the road 20 or so miles.
-
Never been, had plans to go a few times but never made it out China Hat or East Fork Rock. I heard if you go past end of May it's too dusty
-
well it depends when summer decides to start :-\. It was not warm till July last year, and then we got snow in September. :-X.
-
Checked compression, and its 140psi. Anyone know what stock compression is?
-
My service manual says 95-151psi under the section for top ends.
You can download the owners manual from Kawasaki's site. I see stuff like jet sizes in there, but didn't see compression numbers.
-
Anything under 120psi and the KDX will start to run poorly.I'd guess you should see about 150psi with a fresh engine.I've tested CR250 Honda's at over 200psi and had Yamaha's still run at 70psi.I think with an aftermarket pipe and silencer and a slight bump in compression that Kawi would be just about perfect for those long desert rides. :D
-
Actually the E series KDX's have higher compression number's than the H series. So you can expect lower numbers with an H, which is what you have. It is fairly common to see guys on kdxr posting their E's numbers and they have 180+.

Way ahead of you with a Pro circuit platinum pipe, and a fmf Q silencer. Already thinking about milling the head. ;D

Figures, Stock compression ratio for h series is 7:9:1. I heard it was worse on the 220's.

Quick question, what is the proper way to ride a kdx? I don't think riding it like a 125 is correct... :-X
-
Quick question, what is the proper way to ride a kdx? I don't think riding it like a 125 is correct... :-X
You are supposed to ride it with both pinkies in the air. When you stop you should pour yourself a dry martini and put some grey pupon spread on some crumpets. You should then proceed to trail ride, both pinkies in the air.
-
;D
-
Keep your toes pointed up and in towards the cases, stand up as much as possible and find a bunch of fast guys to go riding with, you'll get the hang of it in no time. ;D
-
thats kind of how I ride, but what I am asking is, is it okay to rev the crap out of this bike? Every youtube video I've seen so far, everyone rides this bike super slow, and barely getting out of 2500rpm's.
-
thats kind of how I ride, but what I am asking is, is it okay to rev the crap out of this bike? Every youtube video I've seen so far, everyone rides this bike super slow, and barely getting out of 2500rpm's.
That's just the rider and style. Second, the larger the bike the deeper it is and less it revs. I know that some videos sounds like my Maico isn't revving when it's actually screaming.
You can scream the bike but generally for trail riding you don't want to keep the bike pegged, it will heat up faster. That's why race bikes don't make good trail bikes, a 125 that's constantly pegged and working hard in the trails can overheat.
So when you going to bring the KDX up to Portland for a ride? :)
-
Already in the works. I think the main issue is that this bike is made for terrain like browns camp or mc cubbins gulch ohv. Here is are examples of what type riding there is here in bend..
East Fort Rock OHV - trail 12 (http://vimeo.com/5170965)
East Fort Rock- Not So Secret Place (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnlHUDLIujs#)
This trail looks fun and I wish I knew where it was.
East Fort Rock Helmet Cam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbO7IB4xd7M#)
-
Ya, I'm not much for browns camp, those trails look better for wide open than even browns camp. Been trying lately to update suspension and brakes. Trying to go to disc brakes, at least in the front.
Diamond Mill 4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oth3nhveIIw#ws)
Diamond Mill 5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M273B2bR1O4#ws)
-
If there were trails like that here I wouldn't be complaining. O-well, I think I will ride the kdx till I am 100% comfortable with bikes and I will move up to a 300.
-
Oh ok, I see what you're saying. Sorry, around here McCubbins Gultch and Browns Camp are considered WOT trails :) for the most part, what I showed was Diamond Mill which is technical single track, none of which is at browns. But your trails like I said are really WOT, would be nice to open up some of my bikes there as they're made for that terrian, they just happen to work well in single track (minus the CR500, which is why I got rid of it).
Ya, if you're looking to ride WOT in that area, KDX isnt the right choice. I know I made the comment before that KDX's were seen as a "dog" to me, and that's just because where I grew up was all farmland (Trax Farms), open fields, no technical what so ever, no trees even. Just had to watch out for ditches. So I was easily in 5th gear WOT all the time. Thats another reason its hard for me to be WOT in the woods, there's trees! So any bike that wasn't a quick race bike is left in the dust and felt like a dog in that respect. Thats just my opinion that a KDX isn't really meant for WOT and is meant to be ridden on trails. It's not for the desert. But That's my opinion, maybe someone else has a different opinion.
-
exactly, I want mainly single track or a kick ass technical trail like some at browns camp that go on forever. However, I will be also riding so mx track(hopefully) at my friends house up in sandy. Which is why I thought about maybe doing a kx125 chassis. Would changing the gear ratio help?
-
Here's the thing. If you lower the gear ratio, the accelleration is faster but the top speed is slower and the power is moved down in speed. if you raise the ratio, the accelleration is slower but the top speed is faster.
A big bore like a 500 can maintain accelleration as the gear ratios go higher for much taller gearing than a smaller bike could obviously.
You should buy my KTM 495 and put some modern suspension and brakes on it :) That bike has some wicked accelleration.
-
KTM 495 Responsive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeQjF6nrzy8#ws)
-
lol, I think a 300(GasGas 300 ;D) or a modern framed 500(cr/kx/wr) would be a great choice for around here. As for the ktm 495, great idea, but I have had my fair share hunting down rare parts, and have no reason to do it all over again.
-
I think some of your problems just might be lack of experience on bikes. I ride with guys who ride a YZ250 and a Husky 360 and I can get the KDX to hang right with them in the tight stuff, but when the trail opens up or we hit a big climb, I can keep them within a few bike lengths. Granted a lot of that has to do with the rider not the bike. But I think taking time to learn some good technique will help much more than thinking you need a faster bike :D :P.
-
I always try to conserve my machinery:less wear and tear on the bike, less wheel spin, less gas burned and less fatigue on my part.Your KDX is a torquey machine and I would take advantage of that (more traction/less wheelspin) and ride it in the meat of the powerband and not rev the guts out of it.
Often the final 15 minutes of a ride is the most intense, everybody thinks they are in a last chance qualifier as they try to get back to the trucks first. ;D
-
As for the ktm 495, great idea, but I have had my fair share hunting down rare parts
Haha, ya I know, that's why I include complete second bottom end :)

I understand that, and by all means it is not slow. I don't want to blow this bike up right away as it is a fun bike, but dude I'm 19, ;D.

Hahaha good point... :D
-
If I was riding with jetz or opferman over on the other side of the alps, I wouldn't have a problem.

It's like a 4 hour drive from Bend to get to trails that are trails and not desert WOT.
-
was a joke...lol and mc cubbins is only 2hrs away. browns is about 4-5 hours away. Plus there is stuff all over I just have to find them.
-
2hours is still a pretty far distance :)
-
I guess.
-
Jesus, that kips valve is loud.

So loading the kdx into a minivan was both annoying and time consuming, so I went and got myself a hitch carrier:

Got it local for $100, retails for $150-$200.
-
nice, I've known ppl to have those, work out well and easy to load
-
I know quite a few guys that use those. They are nice.
You always hear people that don't use them say they are bad for your vehicle, but everyone that I know that uses them have zero issues.
BTW: After your facebook post about wanting/needing a faster bike and then I saw this thread back at the top, I thought I was going to read here you sold the KDX :) .
-
how could they possibly be bad?? That's retarded.

I agree. Every time on our local forum when someone buys one or asks about one, people always chime in about the weight at the hitch, blah blah blah. I know at least 4 people personally that use them and love them so if I had a vehicle I could use it on, I would have one.
-
Weight at the hitch??? :o
Shit man I'm screwed with this 18' enclosed trailer, if 260lbs on a trailer hitch it over weight. ::)

I would never sell this bike, it is one of the most reliable bikes I've ever owned.
-
Well, I am currently debating over getting a YZ250, or another KDX(if its still for sale) that is possibly in better shape than my bike currently. Thoughts?
-
Tough choice. what year is the yz?
-
well the 03 needs a stator(supposedly), and the 04 is hammered. Lame.

Well, I bought a tusk clutch and not 5 minutes into a ride I was having problem with it slipping while in gear. I went back home, took it apart, and the pos fibers are to skinny. So, I throw one of the old fibers in and it finally started working correctly? Next ride will tell if everything is fixed. Anyone have this problem before?
-
Don't think tusk makes clutches for Maicos. That's all I own
-
I always grab my calipers and measure new plates because I heard of this happening. I never found a new one out of spec though. I would contact RMATV, their customer service is good. I buy a lot of stuff from them.
