Title: A kids first time on smoker
Post by: Sapper on September 12, 2011, 06:15:03 AM
Took my boy and his friend riding yesterday. There was a younger kid, maybe 18-19 y/o, there riding a RMZ 250. He was actually pretty good. But come to find out, he had never ridden a 2 stroke. :o

So at the end of the day I talked him into riding my boys KX250. I clearly explained to him how a 2 stroke reacts and is pretty violent and to imagine he's riding a 450 but with real power. Well, he chalks up the 3rd rider to take one lap and come back scared and shaking.
He said, " My God, I jumped stuff I didn't mean to jump. That was scary.I never got out of 3rd."

The 125 is down for a complete resto/powder coating otherwise I'd have put him on that to intoduce him to 2 strokes. But he got trial by fire. :D

My boy is 16 and runs that thing 4th & 5th pinned as much as he can. This actually makes me very proud that I taught my son that 2 stroke is the only way and he knows that 4t's are for the mild hearted. He rides 450's and has no problem opeing them up. but he just doesn't like them.

Great story sapper. Its becoming more and more prevalent when speaking to riders, that they have never swung a leg over a two stroke !!

I agree....  if they ever have, itâ??s been so long ago, they forgot just how much fun they are...

A few years ago, similar situation, local track, experienced "B" level rider, 18 years old ride a 250F.  I remember watching him on an 85, he was smoking everyone.  So I let him take my KTM 300 for a few laps.  I gave strict instructions, 1st lap slow to remember what a two stroke is like, 2nd lap, 1/2 throttle, to regain your two stroke legs, then, and only then "IF" we were both comfortable he could then let her rip...  He did as I asked, and it did take two plus laps to get comfortable, then he let her rip... its amazing to watch what your bike do things you know you cannot do....  On his 2nd full lap, he was flying...  then on a down hill jump as he landed, he hit the gas...  the bike wanted to launch out from under him as he wheelied after the landing...  He then coasted, turned and came back to the pits...  I thought something was wrong with the bike....  No he said my arms are 3 inches longer now...  I forgot how much power there is, and hit the gas too hard too soon .and was barely able to keep the front wheel down.  No, you can have it back... but he had a smile from ear to ear, as he said â??that bike is insane, but that was so much fun....â?

i think the thing that scares kids almost as much as the violent acceleration is the lack of engine braking.

Two stroke bikes definitely take a little time getting used to that's for sure! My 1st 2t was a 1981 Suzuki RM-80 & once I got used to the wicked powerband & lack of engine braking I was hooked on the smokers 4 life!....... ;D

Articles in magazines I have read where they took 4 stroke riders and got them to ride 2 strokes, usually Ktm or husaberg 300's, a lot of the test riders comment that lack of engine brake is the biggest thing to overcome. They report overshooting a few corners trying to figure it out

Haha... Last week I had to figure out engine braking while riding a friends Ktm450. It had really nice suspension but felt to be built for goat trails...

I'm 38 and grew up with two strokes,so when I decided at the beginning of the year to get back into I went with a two stroke,a 125 which I think is a fun bike to run. So I am the opposite as these kids today as I've never swung a leg over a 4 stroke mx bike. well unless you count my sons klx 110.  :D

That's awesome! I used to have a 99 Cr 80 I rode and then got an 03 cr85 big wheel rode that for a while then started riding my dads 03 crf450...I've been riding that fir a few years racing it and whatnot and I decided I wanted to get a 125 to ride and ride it yesterday. WOW! so much fun! The torque of the 450 was nice and all but just railin that 125 around berms and pinning it, got the juices flowing for sure! I really think riding the 2t's will get you surprisingly better. Goin from the 450 to the 125 was actually nicer, WAY lighter I'm 150lbs and 5'11 and that 450 takes all the energy outta me. I'm super pumped now I'm actually thinking about racing the 250 (125) class here soon after I ride it a few more tines and get my suspension dialed.

i was talking to a few guys at work the other night and they said that they ride and i was looking at a new bike. one of them told me that he was at the repo auctions and a 2010 yz 450f went for 3 grand. i looked at him and told him thats great but i only ride 2 strokes. thats when his face and another guys face lit up and they both smiled and said they only ride 2 strokes and they are just so much more fun
