Title: Project Two 50
Post by: JohnN on February 15, 2010, 06:10:38 PM
Hi guys...

There are a few of us working diligently to build and race a YZ250 in the Pro Nationals this summer. We are putting together all the needed elements along with a sponsorship proposal.

We started up a web site... please check it out and let me know what you think so far. There is not that much information on the site yet, but we are working on it and getting stuff together...

I have a question about mods to the SSS suspension. I know this is about a pro bike you are building and I am technically a squid but I am interested in anything worth doing to the suspension. Right now at 225 lbs I ride with stock springs. Based on my current speed, style, and overall ability this works great even high speed sand whoops. It is awesome in the ability to absorb the big hits as well as overall bumps. My problem is I am afraid to adjust it since it is so good now (I did do the clickers to dial it in). I remember buying a White Power shock for my (first) 87 CR500 that totaly transformed the bike. My question for those in the know is it worth upgrading the stock SSS or should I leave it alone. FYI even though I am a squid the best set up for me was used CR500s I bought from a distict 34 rider who raced the Nationals. He was WAAAY faster but the set up worked perfect in my world (slow motion). Thanks for any input from those who know the Yamaha SSS stuff.

My suggestion would be to talk to someone that can really help you get it set up right. Jay at Get Real Racing is amazing and he'll watch you ride, talk to you and get it set up the way you like...

Just a silly question, did you buy the Pro Bike from Kurt McMillen??

I sent a PM as well...

I thought 250 two strokes were still banned from the Nationals. Did I miss a story?
Title: Re: Project Two 50
Post by: offroader on February 15, 2010, 09:17:28 PM
Nope never banned.Seems alot of people think this because everyone went to the 4jokes.A 250 2t has to race against 4 strokes of almost double displacement because of an old rule of when 4t technology wasn't borrowed from formula 1.

We have our schedule of Outdoor Races that we will be competing in listed below;

June 5 â?? Freestone Raceway Wortham, Texas
June 19 â?? Budds Creek Motocross Mechanicsville, MD
July 4 â?? Red Bud Buchanan, Michigan
August 14 â?? Unadilla Valley Sports Center New Berlin, NY
August 28 â?? Moto-X 338 Southwick, Mass
September 4 â?? Steel City Raceway Delmont, PA

This is going to be a great deal of fun for all involved. Our hope is that fun and excitement is contagious. Obviously the reason for doing this is for the fans that believe in the two stroke... we really would love to meet all of our supporters, so please feel free to drop by the rig to say hello and introduce yourself.

There will be constant updates on the Project Two 50 site as we go along... so you'll have an idea of who is involved and know a bit about us before the first race.

Merger Z - Thank you for all of your support, we really appreciate it. I've added a Paypal donation button to the Project Two 50 web site. Every donation will go directly towards this project to pay expenses.

How about Dowd?
Title: Re: Project Two 50
Post by: JohnN on February 16, 2010, 05:15:35 PM
We are working with a local Pro racer by the name of Mike Leavitt.

Sure it would be wonderful to get a name racer like John Dowd, but those guys want a great deal of money to race. Besides, if we do well this year, the possibility exists where we will put together a squad of two-stroke racers for next year (2011).

Quick story... at the 2009 Unadilla Two Stroke Invitational in timed practice Mike Leavitt was fast, so fast that John Dowd told him to slow down, not to make the rest of them look slow. If you read the story, Mike and Todd DeHoop came together and Mike got up last! In a two lap race Mike finished 4th!

As a great addition, Mike switched from the four-stroke 450F to the YZ250 two-stroke about halfway through the season at the local races. He beat all the local pros to win the coveted number 1 plate in that class (oddly called the 250 Expert class! ?) So he has quite a bit of experience racing a two-stroke against the four-strokes.

I believe we picked a great racer to compete on our two stroke machine. We are working on his bio right now and hope to have it up soon.

Brandon and I have exchanged e-mails already. Very nice guy and fast racer.

We already have a racer that we are committed to and who is fully committed to this project. He jumped on board when there was absolutely no money involved (not that there is any now either!) He also was willing to "donate" his machine to the cause and has made many contacts inside and outside the industry. A true team player.

Mike has been training for the past two months getting ready for the Nationals. He will be able to go as fast or faster in the closing laps of each Outdoor National moto....

In addition Mike is very well spoken which will be a huge bonus for our sponsors! 8) 8)

If this project is as successful as I feel it can and will be, we will put together a true two-stroke race team for 2011. Where we will compete in the AMA series and in the Two Stroke Series that our good friend is putting together. ;D ;D

Hey, think anyone would notice if it was a 270cc. LOL

Man are you kidding??? The AMA, MX Sports and the other competitors will be looking very closely for any infractions of the rules.

While the rules are set up so that the four-strokes have a huge displacement handi-cap we will ensure that our machine is within the intent of all the rules. In fact, one of the first things we did was to print out the rule book and go over it very closely to ensure we do nothing that can be criticized or interpreted as cheating on our part.

Our goal is to do the best that is possible within the handi-cap rules offered by the AMA and to be able to stand tall if anyone tears down the bike and know without doubt that it is within the rules.

With any luck, we will have a huge contingent of underground fans at every event!! And we will get lots of exposure for our sponsors.

Yeah, I was kidding. I'm sure, if he does well, they will have someone disputing him.  The OEM's will not like being beat by a 2 stroke.  I'm also not sure on the weight thing. Did they make the weight limits higher for the 2 strokes or anything like that?
Title: Re: Project Two 50
Post by: JohnN on February 17, 2010, 05:35:23 PM
Here are the AMA rules on weight.

1.16 Minimum Motorcycle Weight
a. 250 Motocross Class: 194 pounds 2-stroke / 212 pounds 4-stroke
b. 450 Motocross Class: 212 pounds 2-stroke / 220 pounds 4-stroke

1.17 Weighing Procedures
a. Weight limits must be met after qualifying and after a race.
b. The Chief Technical Inspector may require a motorcycle be
cleaned of excess mud or dirt before weighing.
c. The official AMA scale will be available before qualifying and
during the races for weight checking.
d. No fluids may be added to the motorcycle, except water to the
engine cooling system.
e. The fuel must be drained from the fuel tank.
f. Ballast attached to motorcycles is not permitted.

I think I now have a good reason to get to Buds Creek from FL this year. I want my kids to see the pro's since they have never seen anyone that fast before. The are 8 & 10 and are aware of the 4T displacement advantage so I thing they appreciate the 250 out there. Just need the ECO-NOMY to provide some work so I get the funds to do the trip. If not I will be glued to the TV. These are the new good old days.

Yay,go "chinese" Mike 8)Have you given any thought to running any of the Canadian national outdoor series? You'd get good exposure for sure. The series runs on sportsnet and is repeated various times throughout the year until the next years series begins. Many Americans have and do run it including Treadwell,Huffman,Carpenter,Dowd to name a few.Just a thought.See you in Riverglade :)

Nick Wey always cross the border as well..Carpenter just quit racing for good. Treadwell is a character!!!Like the guy! Remember him on the RM 250!!! I remember racing against Mike Mad jones @ 2 arenacross! BTW about CANADA because we have shorter outdoor racing tracks..I still remember JSR kicking everybody asses on his cr250 back then when everybody switched to 4 junk.

Alright back on track...

A bunch of product sponsors have already joined the Project Two 50 cause. Please consider using them when you purchase product for your machines... it would also help us greatly if you sent a letter or e-mail of appreciation to these companies for sponsoring us.

A new sponsor has signed on to help Project Two 50, we welcome Scott Goggles to the team!

Here are a couple of photos of the practice bike with the Project Two 50 graphics....

We sure could use some help from the two stroke lovers among you, that could help with donations. We have been fairly successful with getting product help, but not so much with money help. We are looking for some help with gas, entry fees, food and other small incidentals, every little bit you can help with goes a very long way!

Thank you!!
