Title: Dual Sport Fun
Post by: SachsGS on August 19, 2012, 03:44:18 PM
Recently went on a much needed vacation that involved over 700 km (400 + miles) of rough gravel roads into remote areas of western Canada and was amazed at the number of guys on dual sport bikes. I'd say 70% of the traffic I met were motorcycles, the KLR 650's, big BMW's and Vstrom's being the most popular. It looks like fun and is something I'd like to get into. I also need 8 ply tires on the Ford next time, three flat tires is no fun when driving on blast rock roads! ;D

I've had fun doing that. We like to vacation in northern Ontario. Typically, we'll camp, and canoe, but I started bringing the KLX, and doing a little exploring that way.
You never know what you're going to find
Looking for a little fixer-upper? ;D

This is the ferry crossing the Abitibi river, between Cochrane and Moosenee

There's a lot of riders down this way that have converted from off road to the Big DS or "Adventure" bikes.
Most of these guys have gotten a little older, the old bod is pounded and they want to travel and see the sights.I keep looking at it myself.I just got back from a trip through the White Mtns in New Hampshire and thought about what a great trip that would be in the fall while camping in the national forest.Maybe someday......
One of the local ex off road guys just got back from a DS trip.It looked like fun to me.

I'm planning on purchasing a dual sport bike and I'm trying to make my mind up about what to get. Two guys I know bought the BMW boxer monster enduros so I have to be able to keep those in sight on the highway yet preferably have something a little more dirt worthy. A used (if you can find one) BMW GS800 might be just the ticket. Another friend bought the Suzuki V-strom but apparently it's not staying in one piece. ::)

I used to have a BMWF650GS (pre china engine) and it was a great bike. Got almost 70mpg and I could commute to work or go exploring off-road as long as it wasn't too serious. My current dual sport is a 2008 Yamaha WR250R. I think I will probably always have a dual sport in some for or another in the garage for their usefulness.

I had a KDX200 dual sported for awhile but it wasn't very good unless the road sections were very short. I miss that bike though, great woods engine.
