So I've heard a lot about holeshot devices and how they prevent "diving". My question is what is "diving"? when I hear diving I think of the front end compressing when you drop the throttle......but two strokes have very little engine brake. I'm a little perplexed by this. Any Insight would be appreciated.

It's supposed to help control the front-end during the blast out of the startgate.
If you don't compete for important race-points every weekend, you won't need it.

Holeshot devices have nothing to do with the fork diving,all the holeshot device does is hold the forks down about 1/2 way off the start so the bike doesnt wheelie as much.Then when you hit the brakes going into the first turn it releases back to full travel

I never had that problem... back in the day (when I still raced MX) we only had 5 inches of travel :o so no holeshot device was necessary... 8) :P :D

I still think that a holeshot device is pointless, ive pulled holeshots without one, i still think theyre a gimmick, if your got enough grip to wheelie off the line then your sat too far back is what id say..

I don't have one but I want one. They really help if you know how to really use them. With a holeshot device its better to sit closer to the middle of the bike but try to focus your upper body weight over the bars. That edge is enough to get a holeshot.

there will be the day that a rider wont need any skills to ride.
if you're a good rider and control throttle/clutch the right way, a holeshot device is pointless.

Not really. Consider the guy to the left of you. If he is just as fast as you are off the line but he does have the holeshot device, I believe he will indeed get the holeshot. This has given me an idea for a new show. Mythbusters motocross

Sounds like a good show......puting 4strokes through the same gauntlet as 2strokes could be fun....
EDIT: staying on topic, I'm by no means at that level of competetiveness just my inquisitive streak getting the best of me.

i want one bad i race harescrambles so we start dead engine so sometimes its not so easy to sit all the way up on the tank to keep the front end down and start the bike fast enough to pull the hole shot i still get it done either way tho

That's the best description on a holeshot device given! They do really help alot in MX/SX races.Just imagine a concrete starting pad.They work great on the concrete starting pads & really good on dirt ones also.Todays Pros as well as class A & B racers are using them to get the holeshot. If they were a gimmick the pros definetly would not use them. Those guys do everything possible to save weight & we all know how important it is to get the holeshot in Professional AMA events. :P
