Title: Maico 620 SM
Post by: FrenRob on December 02, 2011, 01:14:21 AM
Hi all,
My name is Rob and I am new to your site. I have joined in the hope of finding more info on the above mentioned bike.
It is a 2010 Koestler built Maico 620 Super Motard and has been a bit of a lemon from day 1.
The main problem is that it " 4 strokes " when it is running and rarely comes on the "pipe".
Does anyone here have any idea what my problem may be ????
Thanks in advance.

Rob :)

When you say its not running the pipe, I am assuming that you mean lacking power? In any case I would try cleaning the carb and maybe consider checking your power valves. I'm not a big Maico professional, so that's all I got :-X   Best of luck to you  :)

Thanks for the reply, :) but when I say on the pipe I mean hooking into the powerband :o

These pistons are huge, so basically its got a crap load of torque but not as revy as some of the smaller bikes. First thing I would do is a compression check and check jetting(plug chop etc.).

The problem Rob is that none of the Maico types on here like to see the "best bike ever built" referred to as a lemon-even if it's true. :D
Welcome aboard.I'm sure some of the Maico guys will be along sometime.

If it isn't hitting power band by bogging down, then you may want to check the compression as factoryx had mentioned. Or maybe your main jet is clogged. If it has sit in storage, or just hasn't been cleaned in a while, then after a quick compression test, the carb may be a good place to check as well. I have never ridden a big bore Maico so I couldn't tell you how revy they should be for such a large engine.

If the main jet was clogged it would have seized already. Power valve could be a good place to start then I would check the ignition timing, by that I mean strobed with a timing light v's marks made on the flywheel graduated from mm BTDC

You could check the timing, it wouldn't hurt. But the main jet has a series of small holes that go up the length of the jet, if the higher ones are clogged but the whole jet isn't completely, then that could also be your reason that the engine might not be getting enough fuel to hit power band.  At least I think the jet should have those holes, my bike doesn't, but like I said, I'm not a Maico pro by any means.

Hi guy's,
Thanks for the replies.
This engine does not have a powervalve so thats one thing I don't need to worry about. The carby has been meticously cleaned and appears OK. It has a brand new complete PVL ignition installed and this certainly improved things. i don't think compression is an issue either as it just wants to throw me over the bars when I kick it over :D I will be trying to fire it up over the next couple of days and I will see how I go and report back.

Cheers
Rob

Good luck on the knee.

Wearing braces? (I'm asking because a buddy just got surgery from an injury gotten while wearing worn-out braces.)

still having dramas Rob?

knowing that maico generally re-use parts on as many models as they can to save money, perhaps the pipe is off a smaller cc model and is therefore too short... so you can never properly get "on the pipe"
take some measurements of the different segments of the pipe and post them up

That carb bowl is trick, does it literally just pop off? Also, I know this bike already pulls some nice HP figures, but does the pipe look a bit restrictive?

I don't know, the pipe is 50mm ID at the head and is a lot bigger than it looks in the pics.

It has been a while since my last post so I thought I had better do an update.
As you have seen it looks ok in the video but that is where it stops. As soon as you load it up it dies and goes and dies and so on.On friday we realised with the help of a timing light that the ignition was "walking", that is is was firing up to 15mm outside and on either side of the timing mark and so it seems that the issue is the CDI.
The bike has been sent to a workshop that is more qualified than I ever will be and I will have a clearer idea of what is going on on Tuesday.

Cheers
Rob

Rob, are you in Australia?
The sticker on the swingarm is from an Australia company, which is why I ask.

The 'issue' is those PVL shitter ignitions throw that away and get a proper DC/DC programmable and the world will be your oyster.

I had a little test on it today after getting it back on Friday and did the holy shit thing straight after dropping it into 2nd gear. About 30% throttle and the front wheel came off the ground, so I short shifted into 3rd and had the same reaction. With a little bit of luck weather wise I will get to test her out at Symmons Plains Raceway (Tasmania) on Sunday week.
The ignition problem turned out to be incorrect installation instructions from the manufacturer apparently.

Rob, this is a crazy coincidence!
There's very few Aussies on this board, yet two of them happen to own late Model Maicos, and both live in Tasmania.
I reckon there would only be a handful of late model Maicos in Australia.

What are you plans with the bike?
That thing would be a beast around Symmons, it'd hit a decent speed down the back straight.
In motard form there isn't a whole lot of places to ride that in Tassie.

Would love to check it out in person one day.

Hi Bio,
I bought the bike because I wanted something radically different and could not be f@#ked building another motard. 8)
And I don't like road bikes. ;)
The plan is Symmons Plains and Baskerville amd hopefully a round of the Vic's. :-
Where in this tiny little state are you ??
And we should catch up. ;D
