Title: Left Side Kick!
Post by: opfermanmotors on March 09, 2013, 06:34:57 PM

Still a fan of the left side kick, I've gotten good and creative at starting it in tough places but accidents happen!

Left side kick is interesting, first day I got my 79 cr250 I kicked it over with a pair of skate shoes and it slipped and cut my ankle open haha.

Good stuff man. When the bike first flipped I actually said "Why the heck did he click it into gear!?" LOL. Then you explain it was an accident  :D .

Hey Opfer, if you noticed your Maischco fired on the first kick and then it took a bunch of kicks to get it going. What I've found with my Maicos is if, after stalling, the bike doesn't fire up on 1 or 2 kicks I'll prime it with the choke for 1 or 2 kicks and then it will fire right up with a kick or two. The big bores seem to lose their intake charge if they don't don't fire up right away.

I actually got rid of my KDX because kicking it was too hard on my back (two surgeries in case you don't know). My next ff road bike will be e-start as well. My Gas Gas trials bike is kick but I don't ride it nearly as long as I did on trails rides with the KDX, where I might stop and re-start several times over the course of the full day of riding. I usually only start the trials bike once and ride an hour or two, then park it for the day.

That's a good advertisement for having a ES. Even a RH KS on a smaller 2t may have problems getting a decent kick in a rut like that.

Just think if that stall had happened in a timed special test - well, even a transport section. Not all starting situations are on level ground - some (well most, in my local area) are on the edge of a cliff.

Nothing at all against the LH kick start of a Maico. I had them, Maicos and other lefties, and it's just a matter of getting used to it. At the moment, my RH knee is so kaput, I'd have an easier time kicking over a LH KS bike whilst sitting On   the bike - I'd not have a hope in hell of kicking a LH KS levered bike standing off to the side........

Magic Buttons are OK by me - I'd love to have one.

I think I see the riders knee on the top of the rut wall?  I've had to do that, a fair bit. ;D Though, thank goodness, I never followed through with a foot onto the gear lever.  Now that's bloody Fear and Loathing. :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o.
