Title: hard to start cr85
Post by: iancr125 on April 28, 2012, 08:46:04 PM
Hi

Thought Id joing this forum for some help, I have a 2002 cr125 and my 11 year has a 2004 cr85 which is hard to start since getting the bike Ive stripped the carb down and cleaned it all out and set back to standard but its still alot harder to start than my cr125 which even my 11 year old can start within 1 or 2 kicks from cold.
Its had a new coil pack and we go through a plug in it everytime we are out on it

Does anybody have any ideas what I can check next? ::)

When you say hard to start, do you mean hard to kick over, or you have to kick it over more than you should? And fouling a plug every time you ride is a sign of jets that are too rich, or the air/fuel screw is to rich.

yeah its hard to kick over i usually start it for him but normally takes a good few kicks and sometimes needs to be bumped, we went out put a new plug in and it started 3rd kick, but time after that it was a pain to start, my son had a rt100 just to let him get used to gears before the cr85 and he could start that no problems

Ive been told a new air filter might help so going to try that next weekend, The silencer has been repacked so not sure if that will make any differance.

I would do a compression test and see where it's at. Low compression will give you hard starting problems.

If it's hard to kick over, take the spark plug out, and move the starter with your hand, just to make sure the piston isn't hooking up anywhere it shouldn't be. If that checks out, then do a compression test like Toadmeister said.

Yeah X4. Run a compression test and check your jetting. If its 3 kicks on a brandnew plug then after a bit of riding alot harder then I would say jetting. Good luck
