In my area,in the early Spring, the top 1 or two inches of soil will thaw during the day but the ground underneath will remain frozen and let me tell you does it ever get greasy.I've observed in those conditions that a 4T will just sit and spin ,even on level ground,whereas a 2T will somehow find traction and pull away. It's actually a dangerous time to ride and I once got speared in the calf by a pine branch that found it's way past my safety gear. :-X

I rode an enduro years ago in the winter in CA. Cold enough during that week to completly freeze mud on a smooth and level fireroad. Would not have been as issue but when my minute came through that section the morning sun has shined on it for a few minutes -- thawed the top 1mm or so of mud, again ice underneath. Harder to ride on that pure ice! Went down 3 times in quick succession. Looked like a 3 stooges movie with my trying to pickup the bike with my feet shooting out from underneath me! That was on a WR500 Yamaha. A bit too much power for the prevailing conditions that day!
