Title: YZ 360 Aluminum Frame
Post by: SMPDaddy on August 17, 2011, 03:41:54 AM
I've been lurking here for a bit and wanted to introduce myself and my new toy.  It's a 2011 YZ250F with a 2 stroke motor and an Ohlins 360 kit.  Just picked it up today so I don't have any action shots but I do have these.  If anyone is interested I hope to add some info on how it runs and some pix of it after a good ride.

For anyone interested in this bike here is the company I got it from.  No I am not affiliated with them but I have to say that it was good to meet George and I have a really good feeling about this bike.

Hell yeah, i'm interested in a ride report. That things a beast.
I'd like to see some pics of the frame mods too, if possible.

Here are a couple more pictures that I have handy.  I'll get more when I take it out to the track this weekend and a closer shot of the motor/frame.  George did a nice job so the motor almost looks stock.  I have to admit the idea of having the power of the 360 in the newer YZ250F and the low weight is pretty intriguing.  I'm a 2 stroke guy and as much as people have tried to get me to buy a YZ450F I have kept refusing because I plan on riding 2 strokes until they are fashionable again.   :D

Like I mentioned in the first post it has the Ohlins 360 kit, Pro Circuit pipe, FMF silencer.  I threw a leg over it briefly today and I can say that it definitely has some torque and a smooth powerband.  I am looking forward to wringing it out this weekend and writing up about it.

Holy poop! That thing looks amazing, I wish I could ride that bike. The power must be insane! Definetly a four-stroke murderer, no doubt about it. Now if they only allowed that to 450 class...

I'm going to be sticking to mostly vet and open class so it isn't going to be a problem but I wish they would change the rules.

I am going to pick up a spare 250 cylinder so I can play with some 4-strokes  :)

That's what I'm talking about!!! I'll bet there wont be too many used YZs around after this beauty gets some exposure. Jealousy is rampant! Checked out the web site and there was no mention about the kit. Have fun, I know I would!!!

That is beautiful! That would eat 450's for sure, i would probly kill myself on that though.....

Very COOL bike, I didn,t know the 360 kit was made yet. They raced the 360 kit engines against the 500 2-st,s in the 500 class. So I,m sure it will pull hard.

The bike looks great but i am not a big fan of those plastics.  I would much rather have the regular yz250 graphics on there over the four stroke versions any day.  Also that back fender is way to freaking long.  Other than that please give us a report of how that bad boy handles on the track. ;D

I would like to call and talk to you about your bike. I'm building a Yz360af . I'm using an 05 Yz 250 for the build . You can't put a stock 250 cylinder back on the bike . The 360 has a long rod . Send me your phone number chevelleracer@AOL.com . I'm dieing to hear how it runs .

That looks awesome. I wonder how that engine compares to KTM's old 380. Does anyone have experience with the two?
The benefit of this one is the modern suspension and chassis.

I wonder if it would even work though. Isn't it designed for the backwards cylinder configuration?

I am biased and I haven't ridden the KTM but I can say the Ohlins 360 in my bike definitely has a lot of torque.  The power hits early and winds up nicely and I am getting used to it.  I will be doing some jetting and ignition changes to get the curve I am after.  I have been riding it now for a few months and am pretty happy with it and it is easily my favorite YZ and favorite two stroke.

On a different note I spotted a 1999 YZ250 on craigslist that was being parted out and snapped it up today.  It has a crack in the cylinder near the exhaust bridge but some work and TLC and this bike should be great again.  The guy even threw in a gasket set, new wiseco piston kit and swingarm bearing kit.  I won't even say the price because it was a steal lol.  I hate to see a two stroke die like that.  They deserve to be restored and ridden and not parted out.  In the next couple months I am going to post so pictures of the 99 and my 360 and do some side by side shots because it should be cool.

Same here, the ground was even thawed out in the sun for me, normally I would be riding in about 2 feet of snow this time of year...

I'll try to shoot something next time I ride.

In the meantime here are a couple pix of the frame of my 99 YZ250 that I am rebuilding.

It's a black powder coat

With a rainbow flake and clear coat.

The swingarm was also powder coated.

With a metal flake

I'm dropping off the hubs and rims Friday for their powder.  The bike should look awesome when it's done.

It's 82mm x 68.8mm so it's technically a 363.  Yes it has a power valve.

Be careful there. Cracked and welded Aluminum is WEAK. You can weld it and plate it but chances are it will crack again. Get a steel sleeve to keep the strength. Another option is weld it, then heat treat it, then plate and hone it to size.

I ended up having an LA Sleeve put in.  Today was the first day of break-in and it went pretty well.  The previous owner didn't know crap about maintenance and I got the bike in a series of black plastic garbage bags.  so I ended up putting new bearings all over the place, replacing bolts, complete frame up build, some new plastic, etc.  I still need to finish break-in, fix the jetting on the carb, change the suspension settings and so much more.  I found some great complete rims/tires on eBay for a good price so I swapped out the old rims.  I kept some of the old plastic on it because I expect to lay it down a couple times this week and then the following week it'll get graphics and fresh plastic on it.

Before

After

My two YZ's side by side for the first time

Here are a couple new pix of my pride and joy.  I love this thing, some tweaks to the jetting and suspension and it has been running like a champ.  Super stable, light weight, tons of torque and just too much fun to be legal.  Makes you wonder WTH the AMA and the big 4 were doing pushing those 4-stroke piece of crap machines onto our sport.  Anyway... Props to Motographix for their awesome work and MPS Racing for the bike.

I think if they got their head out of their a$$ they could sell a bunch of them.  They could easily mod their existing frames and drop in a 250 will little effort and they'd have one of the best bikes ever but they stupidly got behind the 4 strokes and will probably continue for a while.

Not only should Yamaha produce this as a 250 but also as a 360 like you have... I've long thought that a 350-360 two stroke was just about the ultimate open class 2 stroke...  Would love a bike like that as I also race vet classes where it's race it if you got it rather than displacement based. I am currently rebuilding my 2003 RM250 from the ground up but one of these may be next on the list.

2003 RM250
2005 RM65 (my son's)
2006 GSXR-1000 (my 4 banger)
