A 2000 KTM 300 EXC.

No I'm not an MXer, but I do like to follow the MX action.  I prefer to blast down the trails, with my bars banging off the trees.  As long as its on a 2 stroke, its all good.... ;D

I just want to say, THANK YOU twostroke motocross.com, for opening up a forum, i have been waiting so long to be able to voice my opinion on the articles on this site, and to share my ideas with this site. By the way, my rides are a 2001 cr125r, and a 1984 xr200, (and maybe a 250 two stroke in the spring, we'll see what my mom has to say).

CR500 conversion here....
Oh, cool, would you post some pics? I was thinking it would be fun to take a 2010 frame from the crf250r, put my cr125 engine in it, bore the engine out to 144, port and polish, and, hopefully, i would have a bit of an easier time, keeping up with bikes double my bike's displacement, but it is definetly at my level, 90% rider, not machine.

Hi Guys,

You can post photos, it's enabled on the forum.  8)

At the bottom of the box where you type your message is a link to "Additional Options" as long as you keep the size pretty small it should work great.

Otherwise, like most forums, you can host a photo on a site like Photo Bucket (or others), copy the image url, click on the button "Insert Image" (right above the smilies on the left) and paste the url in between the (http://) links.

Like this. Here is a photo of a bike that I just sold, I'll post my new machine when it arrives.

Have fun!

Amazing looking bike John......

I'm just a poser....didn't convert this bike, just bought it from an area guy converted as a running "woods bike". I have changed the wheels/brakes/sprocket/chain/seat/tank/tires/pegs/carb and now running a 250 ignition and flywheel. The crews on the CR500 forums can get you headed in the right information. Awesome information on conversions there and CR500 2T in general.

It looks faaaar faster then I actually am!

Two Honda CR125's, both 2007. First bought september 2006, it now has 298hours. Other one bought as a leftover in october 2007, 107 hours so far, in a middle of engine overhaul right now (crank, bearings etc). Usually ride little over hundred hours between engine job.
As anyone can guess by the hours, I like 125's a lot  :D

I've got two rides.

My primary steed is the 1982 Husky 250CR.  My neighbor used to own this bike and it ran horribly.  He had to rev it to the moon or else it would die, there was not really that much in the way of power and it looked like a 400 year old sofa.  Then, my dad and I bought it from him for $800, fixed it up with a proper CR gas tank (a purple one from a 360) and we had a fairly decent bike.  This is my first 250, and it became my regular every-day bike when I was about 14 or 15.  There were problems, though.  The front suspension felt like it was made of granite, the seat still had a tear in it, and it liked to sputter when given more than 1/2 throttle.  So, during the winter of '08 we removed the packing in the silencer, bought a new seat cover, replaced the useless front wheel bearings, put the proper amount of oil in the forks, and painted the tank a new color.  We wanted something that would stand up well to gasoline, but still stand out from the crowd of older Huskies.  What we found was brake caliper paint, like the stuff you'd put on your Porsche 911 GT2 or something, and we chose yellow.  The result is a truly brilliant 250.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/JETZcorp/DSC02105.jpg (http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/JETZcorp/DSC02105.jpg)
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/JETZcorp/DSC02203.jpg (http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/JETZcorp/DSC02203.jpg)
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/JETZcorp/Husky250.jpg (http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/JETZcorp/Husky250.jpg) <-- Before tank, seat, etc.

My next bike, I like even more.  I don't ride this one nearly as much, only once or twice a year, but it's such a treat whenever I take it out.  She's a 1967 Kawasaki 120, and it's still running the original piston.  And don't think the 120 is a museum piece that's only been ridden lightly.  This bike has seen more off-road miles than an Abrams Tank, and still runs strong.  I rode this as my regular every-ride bike for at least half a decade, putting on at least 100 miles per weekend, every weekend.  Let's see a CRF150 do that 40 years from now.  When I say it runs strong, I don't mean that it's got surprising power for such an old machine.  No.  The torque that this bike wields is downright scary sometimes.  On the 250, there's not really much of anything I can do with the clutch or throttle to get the front-end up, but not so on the 120.  If you want to loft the front wheel over some log, all you need is to give the 1/8-twist throttle a zap and it will respond like 490 Maico.  When I was using it regularly, I would ride next to my cousin on his Hodaka Ace 100, and would often have to wait for him whenever we got to an up-hill of any sort, even though I had 4 gears and he had 5.  When we do our annual 4th of July ride, my dad takes his '72 Yamaha 100MX, and he says riding that next to the 120 is like riding a normal 125 against a 250 (sound familiar?)  This bike is, by the way, not even close to stock.  It's got a hand-made straight-pipe with a stinger and no silencing to speak of, so it can only be ridden in areas where no one is there to hear it crackle (which would be possible 10 miles away.)  The forks are probably from a '76 or so Suzuki, and the shocks are forward-mounted Girlings.  It also happens to be the easiest-starting engine of any sort on the planet.  Given proper choke, it will start first-kick after sitting in the garage for 2 years (yes, that's a true story.)

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/JETZcorp/DSC02383.jpg (http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/JETZcorp/DSC02383.jpg) <-- Notice the forks use 95% of travel.
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/JETZcorp/DSC02385.jpg (http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/JETZcorp/DSC02385.jpg) <-- The shocks use about 130%  :(
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/JETZcorp/Bikes.jpg (http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/JETZcorp/Bikes.jpg) <-- Slightly lower than the Husky.

And, I just couldn't resist posting this.

I have two machines right now, but only one is in running.  My primary bike is a 1982 Yamaha IT465.  This is the bike that I started racing post-vintage motocross with in 2007.  I hope to one day restore it to what an IT is supposed to be.

My second bike is a 1989 YZ490 which I was told was a 1987.  This bike was rough when I bought it.  Painted black with grim reaper decals on the tank and a bike week t-shirt for a seat cover.  The side plates and fenders were hacked up to give it that freestyle look.  There was no master cylinder and the front brake hose was cut.  No silencer either, instead they cut up an FMF Power Bomb and had that attaced to the exhaust with a hose clamp.  Real nice work!

No motocross for me, But a lot of love for the two strokes!

I am a senior d37 racer, I had not raced since 1985, and my son wanted to run some d37 hare and hound races this year so I joined him.

I have only raced twice this year, and only on the CR250. I hope to get my confidence up and run the open class in the comming months.

Especially when you have the bawls to remove the silencer.  Never done it yet, but I heard (so to speak) that the effect was Biblical.  I am, however, running a straight stinger on The 120, and it's got the best noise of any engine I've ever heard.  I love me a good top-fuel Hemi, and an open-class Maico is excellent, and I've always been a big fan of jet noise, but they all pale in comparison to the 120.  The crackles, the pops, the underlying growl; it all adds up to a sweet yet menacing excellence.  The fact that it's loud enough to echo off the trees and create a ghostly wail at higher revs also adds when you hear it in the distance.

Torque Master 120 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vktjFN9haI#)

Not the best recording, but it's what I have on hand at the moment.

I had both a 1978 and 1979 Honda CR250R's in those years. At the time they at least looked just like the factory bikes. They just were so cool! Anyone remember the Claw Action tires that were mounted on the 1979 CR's?

Hold on, stop the presses.

A 2004 Maico 500?!  I need every detail of this bike that you can possibly provide.  I've heard the 21st-century 500 is the most beastly of 500cc beasts ever created.  Maico Brothers said in their test that it's the only bike of any make they've ever tested which could out-accelerate a 490 Sand Spider in a rolling start.  I would kill to get an air-cooled version of that engine in a '78 bike, but of course that's just an idle candy-store fantasy.

JETZcorp - you are in luck!! madscientist is working on writing a long term test on the new style Maico. He tells all the good, bad and confusing about these relatively unknown machines. He is working on polishing up the details and the article will be published soon!

On another note the Maico brand will most likely be available here in the USA at the beginning of 2010. Negotiations are now in process and with any luck there will be an announcement in the coming weeks. The cool part? The new distributor is planning on have test ride days across the country! I can't wait to ride one of those beasts!

Second little tidbit of information that you might be interested in, you can actually buy a brand new 1981 Maico 490 directly from the factory!! I'm sure that the price is high, but it's possible.

That should get your Maico heart boiling a little bit!  ;D

All I remember about those tires was to remove them and replace them with something
that worked as soon as you got the bike home.  They didn't work in the Florida sand.
Now, 30 years later, I wish I had kept a set because they are worth their weight in gold
for an OE restoration.

The '78-'80 Red Rockets were the bike to have at the time.  I raced my first year as
a pro on a '78 with good results.  The '78 and '79s became sweet bikes with just a few
modifications.

The claw action tires on my 1979 CR250 were removed before I even started the bike! I know I replaced the front one with a Metzeler, but I'm kind of fuzzy on what I put out back.

About a year ago I stopped into a local shop and there was a 1979 CR125 sitting on the floor and it still had the original Claw Action tires mounted on it. It brought back memories!

Hey dogger315 - How did you do in the Nationals? Do you have some photos? Which race tracks did you compete on back then? What else did you modify on your CR250R's?

1978 and 1979 were the best years in the history of motocross.  When you look across the spectrum at everybody's MX efforts, everybody did it right.  There wasn't a single bad review anywhere to be found.  The Magnum Maicos have the reputation for being the overall best-handling bikes they ever built, having the perfect balance between the turning of a low CoG and enough suspension travel for almost anything.  The Red Rockets are just about the only Hondas I would consider buying if I wasn't boycotting them - they actually look very good and were well-reviewed.  Yamaha finally got their weird monoshock almost totally sorted out and became a major force on the field - the 1979 YZ250 was the most popular test on motorbikearchives.com for quite a while.  There wasn't a bad bike in the bunch.  Even Bultaco pulled out the last great hoorah for the Pursang.

I have a very soft spot in my heart for the YZ465.  It was the bike that made Maico narrow their eyes and say, "Oh yah?  Vell, ve're going to mehk ein 490!"  Aside from that, I think they were the best YZ's ever made.  I hear they were a bit hard to start, but once you got past that you had a great thing going.

Yamaha did a lousy job with the jetting. It took me about 4 months to get it right. Now it takes 3-4 kicks hot or cold.I've had the bike 10 years now and it still brings a big smile to my face.I've raced against modern bikes and did well.Hoelshotted all but the big KTM 520's when the AMA let them run. Some tracks you just stick it in third and roll from there occasionally burping the clutch.Lots of oil (32:1)+VP race fuel=tons of power.Still no fix for the brakes so you learn to turn with the throttle.

Hey dogger315 - How did you do in the Nationals? Do you have some photos? Which race tracks did you compete on back then? What else did you modify on your CR250R's?

I never competed in the Nationals.  I started out in the Florida Winter-AM series.  It was good racing on
tracks like Sunshine, Diamond Back, Palm Valley, Hialeah and Gatorback.  I also raced support class (250)
for the Trans-Am, later called the Trans-USA series and any other race or series that had a pay out.

I had a bike and parts deal with a local dealer.  I would head to the races with my van and mechanic,
and whatever I won, that was what we used for food, lodging and gas money.  The factory riders had
started using box vans by now so the pits consisted of passenger vans, box vans and trailers.

It only lasted two years when I had to decide if I could make a living like this or go to college (which the
parents were pushing).  In 1980 College and a subsequent stint in the military won out and I took a 12
year break from motocross.  When I got back into MX in '92, I had a steep learning curve.  I went from
twin shocks, air cooled, drum brakes to a modern MX bike.  I had to change my riding style and learn
to take advantage of all the improvements.

The modification we made to my bikes centered around the suspension.  The stock rear shocks were
about as good as the Tiger Claw tires so we replaced them with Fox Airshocks.  The forks were modified
to improve oil flow and bottoming resistance.  The engine was ported, cone pipe, some trick FMF or
Mugen parts were added.  Stronger rims, good tires (Dunlops or Mettzlers), I don't remember everything.
I do remember the Hondas were generally more reliable than most of the other bikes at the time, I can
vouch for that from the personal experience I had fielding an open class Husky 360 in '77.

I have some film pictures lying around someplace.  One of these days, I'll have to see if I can find and
digitally scan them.

Hello Everyone,

New Guy here. This is my 185. Not exactly straight up MX material, I know, but as far as I'm concerned, some of the best bikes ever made for what they were desighned to do. These bikes both haul around south Florida for hundreds of miles at a time, always rock solid and trouble free. The 250 is much rougher than the 185, but she's still my sweetie!

I think this things going to be a lot of fun in the Florida Vintage MX races this year at Hardrock Cycle Park and some other places this season, just gotta change those tires.

Thanks,

Jim Hart

Man what a cool bike. The TS's were always great bikes. I gave one to my brother a few years ago. Lots of fun.

just took a picture of my 86 YZ250. waiting on a carb. only paid $20 for it. invested a little over $1000 so far. did most of the work myself. this bike was frustrating to fix. kept on jumping into gear from neutral. ended up being the shift drum. i let it sit for the last 8 months but after the holidays my wife says i can finish it. my wife actually bought me the CR500 while i was deployed to iraq as a welcome home present. also a pic of my 01 YZ250 in its current state.

No pictures on hand, but I have:

89 KDX200
91 KDX200
84 BW80
80 XR80
99 z50
73 F11 250
70 CB750four

I like the old bikes, can you tell? The 89 is my baby. Completely rebuilt and runs like a champ! I think there's nowhere that bike won't take me. The 73 is really fun to get out once in a while too. The BW80 is getting restored for the kiddies, and the XR is the first real dirt bike I ever owned. It still runs too! The 750 has been neglected the past few years since I got back into dirt hard and heavy...

Bought it from Gregg Schnell years ago while the guy was racing for Riverside Yamaha here in the Country. Complete Factory engine work with all the goodies...Was running on VP exclusively. Sold it to a guy and 2 days after he broke his arm lol.... My next purchase will be an RM 250.. Best handling bike ever...
Title: KX250 yr 2000 Road Legal
Post by: westyzkx on December 13, 2009, 12:37:24 PM
Here's my pride and joy - it's a KX250 2000 year and its as good as new, I bought it off a guy who had it imported from Japan after it had been stuck in a crate for years. The funny thing was this guy was 65 and he had bought it as a retirement present for himself he must have been mad this bike is seriously fast!

That guy somehow got it road registered so I'm different to most people on the site cos I don't race - I just ride mine on the roads round London - I have a cool route I take every weekend that goes past Buckingham Palace / 10 downing Street / Soho / Covent Garden & Notting Hill and its such a blast ripping it up past the tourists. I was at the lights against a Honda CBR650 or something last week and I had my first 'drag race' - starting on tarmac you gotta fight to keep the front down but I beat the guy up to 50 / 60mph ish - at the next traffic lights I could see he was pretty shocked that a dirt bike could do that lol

Wish I could find another smoker to ride with out here but I've lived in London 5 years and I've never seen another 2 stroke motocross bike on the streets - it's a really unique ride. I recently gt a KTM 250 sx 2004 and it doesnt have the same poke as my KX so I'm selling it this week on ebay and keeping my KX..
