Title: 2004 KX125 Build!! +Intro
Post by: Josh#663 on March 13, 2013, 09:31:07 AM
Thought this would be a perfect way to introduce myself as my first post haha.

So first off i'm 17 years old living in Australia, i've ridden all my life but started racing 4 years ago on an 07' cr125 on which i was lapped by everyone, i was your normal gooner with the monster energy gear who thought motocross would be easy. This photo should give you an idea of what i was like hahah ;) Im embarrassed to even put this on the interweb...

Being the competitive person i am in all the other sports i did, i couldnt take that, i worked my a## off, mostly off the bike as i never got time to practice, and at the end of last year i was just off the lead pack in my junior class (which are some of the fastest kids in the state)

But even with that huge improvement, i still wasnt happy, i felt like i had way more left in me. Since we didnt practice much as i only had one bike which my parents paid for, I thought i would save up and buy myself a cheap KX125 and use that as a practice bike and race it in the two stroke class here. So around about September last year a pretty beat up 2004 KX125 popped up and i snatched it up straight away.

The throttle cable was snapped and i wasnt planning on riding it until i tore it down, so i kept on riding my 250f until my school holidays when i have time to work on it.... Until, while out practicing late November last year... well i let the photos give you an idea...

I had a freak accident where i whiskey throttled a berm after coming up short on a triple, launching what ive been told to be 8-9metres, i made the split second decision to jump off, landing flat on my feet which broke both my legs and compressed 2 vertebraes in my back. I was in a rehabilitation hospital 450kms away from home for 8 weeks, i came home, got out of the wheel chair as fast as i can and got off crutches after a week, i was walking around 12 weeks after my accident. Im still recovering now, i can walk normally but i cant do anything more then that :)
So now that you have some background info, this build thread should make a bit more sense hahaha :)

Ok now onto the bike :D The plan was to fix what needed to be fixed and just run it, that mostly being due to me not having a full time job hahah  :P But since my dad had secretly wanted a two stroke, he helped me out with the parts that i needed to get it running and handling like new.

So the first things we did was replace all the swingarm, linkage and headstem bearings. Replaced the throttle cable, tore the engine down and replaced the piston rings as everything was in surprisingly good condition. He also surprised me with a set of rims and got powdercoated the frame black. The engine was stained brown so i polished it up also.

So now that all the main priority stuff was sorted it was up to me what i wanted to do to it, and since we put all the effort it to getting it to run as if it was brand new, i thought i might as well go all out on it haha

So the first order i did was:
- Pro Circuit Style plastics (green to black) with the 2012 KXF front fender and number plate
- Pro Circuit R304 silencer and Platinum Exhaust
- Blue Radiator Hoses

The bike sat for awhile and then i had my accident, so as no one was in town the build obviously stopped there, but about a month my dad went back home and slowly worked on it as i was in hospital, sending me photos on his phone as he did it.

After the 8 weeks in hospital which was then late January, i was home and once i had caught up with all my mates and other things, i thought i'd go to my dads work (which was where the bikes were kept and do some work on it). So i slowly bolted things on while i was in my wheel chair haha and by the end of the day i had something that resembled a bike again! :)

And this is where it is at today! Still needs some small things done to it before it is ready to ride. After about 6 months it still hasnt been started either :( i want to hear this thing going hahaha but i still have a least a month or two before i will be able to ride it, im absolutely dying to ride this thing :'(
Still needs a few things done before it is ready to be ridden, also the seat cover isnt on yet but im still happy with the way it turned out :)
Once its ready to be ridden i'll post photos with a decent camera, but these should do for now.

Forgot to post an update on here hahah.

Had a carby issue stopping the bike from starting, but after a proper flush out I got it going. Rode the bike for the first time along with my first ride too. Gotta say, I don't know if it was the 6 months of no riding, but it was the most fun i had ever had riding. Don't think my 250f is coming out of the shed hahah.

Here's a good pic of the bike+ a couple of action shots, I'll post a GoPro vid once I get up too speed ;)

Blue seat cover is going on this week :D Definitely need a gripper seat on it, seat cover on it now has as much traction as a dog running on a polished floor ;) Cheers guys

Seat cover is finally on!! Also buffed off the stock grip and put fresh grips on there, with those two things it feels like a brand new bike haha.

Still little bits like replace some old bolts, chain guides, disc covers, frame guard, handle bar mounts and some other little things. Might also get a new ignition cover to replace the plastic one, but then that its finished!

Try to get some GoPro footage once I'm up to speed :)
