Title: Bike testing at Budds Creek - TM/KTM/Yamaha
Post by: Charles Owens on April 05, 2012, 03:10:58 PM
Hey guys, on May 12th we will be testing some bikes at Budds Creek.

Bikes will include:
TM 300 MX
TM 300 EN
TM 125

KTM 250 SX

Yamaha YZ 250

Let us know what you want to know about. We will give real impressions and write what you guys want to know, rather than what is allowed to get printed by other mags.
Should be fun!

I would love to personally drag race the TM300MX up the hill that is after Henry hill right next to a 450F, which would mean stalking a guy around the track, and just hammering out of that corner and up the hill.  Pretty much everything is rider preference, but I really want to see what that thing will do next to a 450 up that loamy ass Budds Creek hill.  Everything to me should be relative, as "it's fast" and "it's nimble" doesn't really tell people much.  An 84 RM125 is "nimble".

I'll contact Wozney, He'll come out and cover it for the hell of it I bet, if you want some film.

How many people are testing the bikes and what are their skill levels? Just curious of the range of impressions.

I emailed Wozney, told him to come out and film that day.  He makes some of the slickest MX videos on the net.  We'll see what he says, pretty sure he lives around here.

He lives in Delaware, I think I read he moved to NJ though. Either way traveling is what he does. If his schedules open I'm sure he'll be there.

As for testing we will have Ryan Blizzard - Pro
Brennen Weindel (waiting to be confirmed) fast B rider
Still waiting on confirmation from some local am. riders as well.
More info soon.

I think we know what the answer will be to TM125 vs TM300

I am most interested in the 250SX vs 450 and the TM300 vs 450 since NO ONE will do a straight up comparo, not even MXA.

Do lap time comparisons among all the bikes you are testing. Publish the lap times of every rider on every bike.

Publish the MSRPs. If they can't give you the MSRPs, then publish that. At one time, you had to search around to get the price on a TM. It may be better now.

I wonder if Budds would let us borrow a few transponders.  I bet they would if we asked nicely, Charles.

My 300's as fast or faster than the 450's i've dragged it against.

as said above, how the 300 compares with the 450 and lap times of each bike with each rider. that is really the most telling of a bikes performance and set up ability

Im not so concerned with the 300v450 debate.

Id rather hear how the 125/300 TMs go up against the YZ and KTM 250's in every aspect.

-price
-finish/componants/features
-handling/weight
-performance (hill climbing, draging, corner exits, top end, bottom end etc etc)

-and if only you could stop by at a dyno center on the way home that would top it all off!!!
if thats not possible then give us a bum dyno reading of each bike haha compared to the yz/ktm which have known power ratings.

I'd like to see the TM 250 drag race the YZ 250 & KTM 250 SX. Also drag race the 300s against the thumper 450. Make sure there's plenty of traction. A few third gear roll-ons would be great too, for the above mentioned machines. Any of them can do good around a track with a good rider. If you're near any dunes, that is a great natural dyno test. Takes good power to pull a high gear up a long, steep dune without bogging. The bike that does those things best would be my choice. I've no doubt that all of then handle well.

I am going to sweet talk the old lady in the registration building and see if we can get transponders on all the bikes.

Ha! You should! Let him see a real test, and not some phoney baloney MXA/ TWMX test.

So I spoke to Matt Woz at Snake creek this weekend. He said he will unfortunately not be around for the 12th. He will be in California getting ready for the outdoors and covering all the goings on at the local SoCal MX tracks. He took some great shots of me on my TM300EN this weekend though.

some guy on vital named Denn bought one, and the first time he rode it, the throttle stuck and he broke himself badly.

HE, along with all his chronies literally put 100% of the blame on the bike, sold the thing, and bought a KXF250.

He's probably better off of a 37hp trail bike with no attitude, anyway.

There are quite a few posts on the net about KTM throttles sticking.
Something to do with the cable jumping out.
Could happen to any 2 stroke that uses a Keihin carb. Which is 95% of bikes.
I wouldn't be blaming TM for that.
Could have been incorrect cable routing. Who knows.

Fast bike, panic whiskey throttle. sounds more likely scenario.

not a hard fix to stop it from happening. I noticed this hazard the first time I pulled my first PWK carb apart. so when I put it back together I did the following:
There is a rubber sheath on most PWKs where the cable enters the carb.
I firmly zip tied the top of the rubber sheath to the throttle cable cable
and tightly zip tied the bottom of the sheath to the top of the carb (the brass spigot I guess you'd call it?).
This firmy keeps the cable where it should be.
Then I zip tied my throttle cable exactly how I wanted it so it wouldnt get pinched by my tank etc.

15minute job including stripping the bike down etc, and could save your life ;)

if you dont have the rubber sheath just get some hose and some small hose clamp, but be carefull not to clamp the throttle cable via over-tightening.

How is he a tool?  If something that bad happened to me on my bike i would probably be scared to ride the bike again too.  The guy still has his 2012 sx250 which he said is the best bike he has ever ridden.  So what if he sold the bike and got a 250f, hes got the best of both worlds now.

Sure did, although they didnt show with the 250 or the 125.  There was a 300MX and a 300EN.  nice bikes.  I'll let Charles fll you in on the details.  It was a long day.
