Title: 2005 RM250 Build
Post by: Brap on March 20, 2013, 11:50:51 AM
I bought my RM250 on May 16th 2012, I moved up from a clapped out 1998 RM125. I paid $1400 for the 250 and that was one of the best days of my life to finally have a "250". I was never very bike intelligent, i just rode the things. But I've always wanted to do a build and learn how to maintenance my own things, So after 8 or 9 months of no proper maintenance I got my bike back and the shock was blown which gave me the opportunity to finally rebuild it without worrying about missing a day to ride since there so scarce for myself. So here is my journey.... P.S I care about my bike alot thats why shes always clean and shiny but i had a choice between oil change and maintenance or go ride? And lets be honest, I'm going riding haha. I only rode maybe once every 2 months.
Huge thanks to [cnrcpla] for all the questions I had! Thanks Buddy.
Checking out the Pipe and Silencer!
P.P.S - I got my wisdom teeth pulled the day before thats why i'm all over the place. Mouths killing me and the pain pills don't do crap.
Here she is awhile before the rebuild.
My brothers dad put the bike up for me and just power washed it and put it up so she started to rust, needless to say i was pissed.
Can't believe I let it get this bad...
My first engine pull
Before:
Starting to clean the engine and cases up
Afterwards, Huge difference
All the reeds were melted, the bike idled very high
My first time opening the engine, I was very excited.
Rebuild time
Cylinder was in good condition
The new piston
Put everything back together
New chain and sprockets
New MX51's
Rear:
Before and after
Old ones:
New parts from motosport
Fresh grips
Cleaning up the swingarm
Ordered a new chain slider but it didn't come with washers and i have no idea where to get them.
New silencer
New pipe
Greasing them bearings
Forks are leaking a little bit
Found a circlip while cleaning up, hope to god its the old one
My workspace and pimped out lamp
Anybody know what the hell this is and where it goes? it seems to go on the carb but the bolts don't like up and there's none on the actual piece

that is the throttle position sensor. I've never messed with mine. Break out your manual and put it on correctly..... Good job on the cleaning. In the picture of the right side of the motor, the powervalve actuator, is that round disc piece on backwards? It looks like the backside is facing out? If I remember right, mine has two cutouts on it?

I'll pull the cover off real quick and check, it fell out when I spun the engine around so maybe I put it back in wrong.

I would suggest making absolute certain that circlip is one of the old ones before riding... Nice job though, awesome to see!

First time I did a top end, I had the bike all back together, seat and fuel tank on it was hot to trot. I pulled my shorts up to sit on it and kick it over and I felt a circlip in my pocket. Pulled it alllll back down had to buy a new gasket cos the sealant had set (mega pissed) only to find that it was in fact the old one Wasn't happy... Hey don't throw those circlips away by the by! If you ever need a pin for something around that size they slot through and you just bend em up. Fantastic stuff cos they are strong steel too!

Whats a Works pipe? Like whats the difference between the fmf fatty and the fmf factory fatty for example?
I'm not 100% sure, but with Pro Circuit it has the factory finish of raw metal and weld marks instead of the platinum finish. Maybe someone else can fill us in as i'd also like to know.

Factory pipe is bare metal, Fattys are nickel plated, nice n shiny n require bugger all maintenance compared to a factory finish. PC call em a "works" pipe FMF call em "Factory"

What do they do anyways when they "rebuild" your shock? I bought my 125 from a kid who weighed probably 200-250 (just guessing) and I am 150 pounds. He sent the suspension when he owned it to pro action, and now I own the bike and the suspension is really stiff for my weight. What should I do?
There is a lot than can be changed, but you would need it pulled apart to tell what had been done. Spring rates and compression and rebound shim stacks are the main focus of a revalve. Just twist that throttle harder and the shock will work better

Gonna send my shock to Race Tech and rebuild the forks myself, Anyone know the usual turn around on a shock being rebuilt?

This. Theres not much point in getting your shock all mickied up if you leave your forks in stock trim. Why? Cos one end will be differently valved to the other resulting in an unbalance.

Definitely something drastically wrong. Shock seal for sure. I would be very surprised if that shock had any oil or nitrogen in it.

Little update!
Got the shock back yesterday, she's all together just need to break a few links off the chain. I get the forks today, I also need a clutch lever and to get some oil while i'm at the shop. Pretty pumped my only dislike is how far over the R304 shorty sits over the tire, its really gonna get scratched up after the first ride.

Is your subframe bent? If not, you could always put a spacer between the frame and the pipe mount to keep it off the tire. That is if there is enough room to move it over between the plastic. But the worst it will do it scuff up the pipe with rubber. You can literally rub it off with a rag and it's good as new.

Why limit yourself to 05 forks? Find out what their diameter is and see what other forks you can put in the clamps. You could get lucky and find a nice set newer forks, or even a better set up all together.

Wreckers are your best friends for Genuine parts. Grab your phonebook, and look for motorcycle wreckers in your area. They've saved my bacon plenty of times. You guys work on that, I think I'm gonna go get some real bacon cos its made me want some now
