The jury is in. TRIALS TIRES KICK ASS! Pouring down rain, going up hills that are now creeks like it's dry out, front end comming up easily. Even if you stop it just keeps going. NO TIRE SPIN at all. You can fly around the trails in the mud and the thing just GRIPS, never slides out from you. I need to get front trails tire now!

Glad to hear you like it. I have been meaning to try one for the last couple of years.
18" rear right?
-
lol, my dads friend did this with his crf450r, worked great.
-
Yup, 18" rear, all my bikes have 18" rear, they are older and 500's. 19" started happening I think in the 90s and most of the 500s never went to 18" since they killd the 500 class.

Starting to like the look actually. When I first put it on I thought it looked retarded, like a shaved cat.

Put some lights and license plates on the thing and I think the tire would start to fit, aesthetically speaking.
-
Is that tire a Michelin and does snow shut Tillamook down in the Winter?
I was once on a long trail ride with the youngest rider being 18 years old and the oldest 65 years old. The 65 year old was on a new YZ125 with a trials tire in the back. The terrain was fairly demanding (Mt.St.Helens).By the end of the ride the 65 year old was ahead of every rider under 30,where the young guys were clutching and spinning everywhere that YZ went up like "a cat on a hanging carpet".
Those hairless cats must catch a chill easily.

Yup, Michllen
Not that I am aware of :)

Trials tires are very popular here in SW PA. Most guys say a front isn't much of an improvement for trail riding, but won't ride with anything but a trials tire on the rear.
-
I've been wanting to try one on my KTM300. I hear its really great in all aspects expect coming down steep hills. I think I may look for a 2nd rim and mount a trials tire on it. This way, I can then switch between a knobby and trials whenever I get the itch....

Technically, it should have those it's a GS.

I can't go down steep down hills on a knobby! I have heard tho that the trials tire you stay in a striaght line though where as the knobby you usually go off to the side.
-
There were several KTM smokers at the last hare scramble I went to with Trials tires, seems like quite a few people have good things to say!
-
From what I've researched, with trials tires, the inflation pressure is key (8-10 lbs). You need to run low enough pressure to alow the tire to flex and bite, but yet enough to guard against pinch flats. I've been thing about trying one for a while... I now know what to ask Santa for Xmas.. :D
What are the recomended brands?
-
I got "4.00x18 Michelin Trials Competition Tire (Tube Type)" at Rocky Mountain for 80 bucks.
Ya, that is the key. I put mine around 8 pounds. They don't even fill up with mud like the old enduro tires because they flex. They're so soft and very easy to put on you can almost put the tire on the rim by hand they're so soft.
-
A lot local guys in our dual sport club run the Perelli MT-43 because it is DOT. They love it. I am considering d/s'ng my KDX for next year and if I do, that is the tire I will be using.
-
The Pirelli trials tire is lot more "substantial" then the Michelin.
-
Wow! I was not expecting that out of that tire.
-
I've been running the pirelli for over 2 years. I can't seem to wear the thing out! It's about half tread and still grips as well as when it was new. I'll give the dunlop d803 a try next. You won't ever catch me with a knobby on the trails again. There's simply no comparison.
-
I use a Michelin Tubeless tyre, with a tube.
It's thicker in the side wall than the tubeless, but the tubeless lip on the inside of the bead does make it harder to fit. You could trim that off, but I've left them on, on the thought that, if it makes them difficult to get on, it should make it less easy to come of when punctured. Never got a puncture.
The last one I got almost 3000 Ks out of, with still about 3mm of tread - It still stuck to rocks, hard pack like a limpet, but I felt it was time to change it. I have 2 wheels, I used to have 1 with a knobby, 1 with a trials tyre. I now have both set up with trials tyres.
The bike that this is used on is a CRE500. In all types of terrain.
-
wow. :o
-
Has anyone run one of these in sand?
-
they do surprisingly well in the sand. Not as good as a paddle, but better than your average knobby.
-
I must be old fashioned but I like trials tires on trials bikes and knobbies on everything else. While the trials tires have proven themselves durable I'm always afraid that I'm going to "pop" them slamming off stuff at high speed.I also like the "feedback" of a quality knobby tire much better - in a non trials application of course.
-
A few people used them around here and the consensus seemed to be better in some ways, worse in others. To my knowledge, most have gone back to knobs.
-
To my knowledge, most have gone back to knobs.
Is that slang for Canada ? ;)

Western Canada :)
-
LOL.
The guys around here that have tried trials tires are on their second or third and swear they will never go back to a knobby. My back tire is worse than I thought and will need a new one. I am not sure if I am D/S'ng the KDX now or not, but regardless I will need a tire for this season. I am undecided if I will be using a trials or knobby tire.
-
I wonder how the weight of a trials tire compares to a knobby?
Western Canada is a region of great natural beauty characterized by large, modern cities inhabited by sophisticated, well educated citizens.Ford's just jealous.
:-*

Great Beauty indeed,as told by the late, great Stan Rogers.....http://www.google.ca/url?url=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DRD06cFIwmQs&rct=j&sa=X&ei=vxguTa3eB8SLhQfr5en7CA&ved=0CCQQuAIwAg&q=stan+rogers+the+idiot+youtube&usg=AFQjCNGdH7NxVsi5RIrBt2GX3edpddJRUQ (http://www.google.ca/url?url=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DRD06cFIwmQs&rct=j&sa=X&ei=vxguTa3eB8SLhQfr5en7CA&ved=0CCQQuAIwAg&q=stan+rogers+the+idiot+youtube&usg=AFQjCNGdH7NxVsi5RIrBt2GX3edpddJRUQ)
As for weight,if I remember correctly, trials tires are heavier due to heavier construction for running with lower air pressure-I think ???
-
I've yet to meet a person over here who has mounted a trials tire and gone back to a knobby for any reason. Seems like every time we hit the trails, there are more and more of them out there. Northwestern NC, btw.... Lovely mountain riding!

That is a real eye-opening test, Opferman. I'd not have believed it had I not seen that. I'm impressed and surprised.
-
I put a cheapo trials tire on my KDX. A friend gave it to me because I needed a DOT rear tire. It came with his GasGas trials bike. So far I like it. Even for a cheap tire it works really well. Takes awhile to get used to the look of the skinny tire on there though LOL.

I've been giving much thought to trying one as well, just haven't had the extra cash to build a spare 18" wheel for my KX250. I am currently running a Dunlop MX31 120/80-19 on it, and I think I like it better than the 756.
Maybe this year I'll start piecing together an 18" wheel I'm eager to see
