Title: Small Exhaust leak? How can i fix it?
Post by: Braap257 on July 31, 2010, 07:13:17 PM
Me and my brother went for a short ride around our neighbor hood today and he noticed when i got back that smoke was coming out of where the pipe connects to the exhaust. And it also spits some of that famous nasty left over 2 stroke on the swing arm. I included a pic. As you can see it leaks right out of the boot. what can i do to eliminate it?

You could try hose clamps. Also make sure the silencer is fully seated.

Thanks Coop I might try that. I Know this is kind of a silly question to ask but i just wanted some opinions.

I've had problems with that pipe-silencer area in the past (and can you take a guess at which bike it was).  The rubber piece that was on the bike when we got it was totally chowdered, being the wrong size, clamped down to the balls and then run that way for about a decade.  I was starting to doubt if there was even any rubber left, and maybe the silencer was being held on by a big black glob of oil, which would explain the big streaks it would leave on any part of your body if you went near it.  In short, it was an ugly situation.

Got it fixed now, though, with a good-fitting piece of good quality hose material.

On my KTM there is a rubber boot where the exhaust connects to the silencer. KTM wants of $30 for this little piece of rubber...  I when to the local automotive store, and found a radiator hose that was the same size for $10.  Where the pipe connects to the cylinder, I added high temp RTV silicone to ensure a good seal.

I believe there are two boots on it with plastic hose clamps. Ive included a pic at the top of the thread so everyone can see exactly what I'm talking about.

That rubber part is a sleeve that loosend with age.
Make sure it is centered over the Pipe/silencer joint, and put a zip tie in each of the grooves, and Pull them down good and tight.

The boot seems to be centered and tight as it is. I guess i could pick up some new ties and cut the old ones and see if i can center it better...

The boot is not loose at all. I think my best bet might be some high temp sealer...

Like mentioned, I have had good luck with heater hose and metal hose clamps. It works for sealing both sound and spooge (black oily stuff that comes out of the pipe).

If it's spitting black spooge like that she's running bit rich.
You shouldn't get crap like that dripping out of your exhaust, and yeah just hi temp silicone and zip ties should do the trick.

Sounds like my dad's answer to everything.  At one point, our house and everything in it was practically held together entirely with silicone.  And you know what?  Nothing ever came apart or leaked.

I'm with TotalNZ (even though they just flogged us in the footy), your problem isn't the rubber boot, it's the overly rich jetting.

I have plugged the exhaust with some High temp putty stuff. I think it will do the trick. As for the spooge. The guy i bought the bike from said the gas in the tank is pretty old and that i should run it out as quick as possible and put some fresh stuff in there. I'm thinkin that might make it clear up a bit. He seemed to know a great deal about these bikes... How hard is it to jet leaner? Info please.

Jetting is easy. Seems scary at first, but once you do it and see how much better your bike runs you will wish you did it sooner. RockyMountain ATV/MC is a great place to get cheap jets (about 1/5 of what my dealer charges per jet).

So is it possible the carb just needs some adjustment? Cuz as i said before i haven't really been able to open the bike up or take it anywhere yet and I start it up every other day and its not fouling the plug.

Yes the bike is running rich, but there is still an exhaust leak that should be addressed.  As far as adjusting your jetting, you will need to pull the carb, remove the jets, and including the needle jet.  Once you have all the jets out, please write them down...  Many do not, and have no idea as to what their running.  Once you have a list of the jetting, we can help you with a leaner set-up.  Most likely your fix will be changing the needle clip one position .

Pull the carb, give it a proper cleaning, and write down current jetting.  While you're there, change out the rubber on the exhaust with a peice of a radiator hose and give everything a good cleaning.  Come on back with your current jetting specs and we'll get you straightened out.

If you give us an idea of where you are located, maybe there will be a member close to help out. My garage and help is always available to anyone in SW PA and I am sure most members feel the same way.

Get rid of the old fuel first.
NEVER run your bike on old fuel. Especialy if you dont know how old it is.
Throw some new fuel in it and try. You might be suprised with how well it runs.
If not pull the jets as explained above.

Yeah, before you do anything replace the plug, drain the fuel, clean the in tank/petcock filter, give the carb a good cleaning.
Otherwise you will be tuning in circles.

I will take all of these into consideration. As I said before I just picked up the bike "Haven't even got a chance to ride it. I'm still waiting for my gear to come in." The guy said the bike was jetted correctly for the pipe and the that the fuel was probably stale. And that once I replaced the fuel with fresh stuff it will run right. It seems to run fine to me. Just seems to run rich..  I would like to put some fresh gas and maybe a new plug in it before i pull the carby when it may not need it.

A lot of carbs may not "need" it but just a simple cleaning can make a huge difference. Especially when it has been sitting. :)

Some oils will seperate from the fuel when left for along time.
If the fuel is stale the bike is probably running on a "richer" fuel/oil mix.
Drain it and change it first. Throw in a new plug for good measure.
You will need to take the bike on a decent run to clean out the engine.

You should be good to go from then on. :D

So here's a question.  After the oil and gas have separated, is it possible to re-mix them by shaking the bike (and therefore the tank) or has something happened chemically and the two are forevermore divorced?

No point Jetz.
If the fuel oil has seperated the octane of the fuel will be so low its not worth using.
2 strokes will not get away with old fuel as well as 4 strokes will.

So how long does it take to reach that point?  When I put my bikes away between rides there's always a little left in the tank, and there's often some that sits in the cans for maybe two or three weeks between rides.  The stuff is so expensive I'd hate to have to get rid of it... how in the hell does one even dispose of unwanted gasoline anyway?  I can't imagine the city authorities would be too happy if you poured it down the drain or onto the grass.

I throw my fuel away ( I mean dispose if it in the approved manner) after 2 months.
As long as i havnt mixed it.
It will go off quicker if mixed.
I only mix what i need in the short term. But i use avgas which last longer then pump.
Modern fuel does not keep as long as it once did.
Keep it in a metal container because believe it or not fuel goes of in plastic. Plastic breaths. Thats why you cant paint a plastic tank.
2-3 weeks between rides is not a problem.
