Title: Chrome Frame CR250
Post by: ashpeat on January 26, 2013, 03:04:55 PM
I was thinking of a project bike i would like to do in the future, and one idea i cant get out of my head is buying a good condition cr250 and getting the frame chromed completely something like this http://surfcitychrome.com/files/page0_4.jpg

What do you all think, do you recon it would add a significant amount of weight? (not gonna race it, just want it to be rideable)

Talk about bling  8) I don't think it would add too much weight doing just the frame

Back in the old days frame manufacturers, like the Rickman brothers, nickle plated their frames. Not sure why, but it would be something to look into.

I remember the nickel plated frames. You were talking about a steel framed CR weren't you ash?

Haha yeah i know, but i'm a sucker for a trick looking bike, and id love to be able to pull a wheelie like those baltimore lads (not that the chrome is gonna help me do that ha)

I was actually thinking of the newer frames, think there ally, they have a bit more surface area, although now you say it the old frames could look a bit more tasteful ha

Aluminum frame could be polished out to achieve the same bling factor

Lots of people polish out their perimeter frames and swing arms.  Looks good if you're into the bling.  I am not, but I've seen a few I liked.

Get some Mothers mag polish and some 1200 grit sand paper.  She'll shine like a new penny.

I think you'll find chrome would quickly crack and flake off as frame flex's.

Powder Coat is available in Chrome as well. Won't crack from frame stress and is much lighter than most other coatings.

I agree with EVO...  I'm not a fan...  I keep thinking it would look great until after the 1st ride.  whats it going to look like after the 1st ding / scratch...  is going to make it look bad???  Last winter I rattle canned my frame.  It looks good, was inexpensive, and best of all it protects the steel.  I guess I'm old school, but I vote no.  sorry,

From personal experience, IF you go down the polished aluminum look, you can get it to a mirror finish. I have done it to my swing arm, but if you do it and want to keep up the "nice" look to it, be prepared to clean it, and re-polish it after every few rides. If your going in the woods with it, forget it, I wouldn't even bother, unless you plan to polish it after every woods ride.
