Title: Bitter sweet...
Post by: Coop on September 22, 2010, 12:59:05 PM
I always have mixed emotions after selling a bike. My oldest nephew decided he wants a quad not a bike (egad!!) so I listed my 1988 KX125 yesterday for $500 firm. It sold to the first guy that came today to look at it. Guess I should have asked more, lol. Anyway now I can definitely go tomorrow and pick up the 2003 KDX200. But that old 125 was such a fun bike to ride I was sad to see it go. If I kept it though I would have 6 bikes in the garage. After today I have a 2007 Suzuki GZ250 (wifes), 2003 BMW F650GS (mine), 1997 CR80Expert (nephew), 1994 KX60 (nephew). After tomorrow evening a 2003 KDX200 will be joining the stable and 5 bikes is about all I can squeeze in there plus my wife's car once it starts snowing. So the KX had to go.  :(

Anyone else ever feel like this after selling a bike?

Yep.
I was sad to see the RM go early this year.
I had spent alot of time getting it to how i wanted it.
In the time I had it i fully rebuilt it from the ground up.
It had given me 3 years of good service and was a bloody good bike.
Same with the KTM i sold at the same time.
But life goes on and remember that as long as your stable of bikes keeps improving with each new edition, thats a good thing  ;D

P.S I have a guy coming on saturday to buy my TT600 which is fully restored.
Will be sad to see it go but i can't justify it sitting there doing nothing.
I fired it up last week for the first time in 12 months and took it for a spin around the block. Still goes great.

Just enjoy your new KDX and i am sure you will spend plenty of time modifying it  ;D

Definitely had the same feeling when i sold my first real bike, 2004 yz125.  Funny thing is though i was at the track last sunday and he was there riding it.  I talked with the guy and he said he loved it so i was happy. :P ;D

If you are really attached to a bike - just keep it. Most of my best loved motorcycles I still own and I live in the country on an acreage so storage isn't a problem. Two the first motorcycles I got when I was 15, a Mach 1 250 Ducati and a Sachs 125, are still part of my collection. My sister is concerned about me but is confident the affliction is treatable. :D

You can take comfort in that it wasn't a Maico :)

Are you getting a Quad now?

Oh I forgot about that. I still have my first ever bike, 1978 XR75. It's in the shed stripped down to the frame and the engine is pieces. I am having a hard time tracking down a cylinder.

At one point I had 12 bikes in the garage and Sami's car sat outside. I got tired of her whining about it being covered with snow in the mornings so I sold them all off but a couple.

Heck no! I don't support quad habits  :) . That $500 today is going towards the $1000 purchase price of the 2003 KDX200 I am buying.

My first bike was a 1971 Kawasaki 100 (KE), yellow thing.  I got rid of it in 1993 I believe it was, it may actually still be who I sold it to, at Bill's place on waterdam road in Clairton.  He's got a graveyard of bikes there.

Yeah Coop when I sold my 01 RM 125 in 02,I watched it go out of site in my friends pu,then when inside and balded my head off. I loved that bike, had a srs piston, pipe and silencer, fmf ignition,rg3 clamp, pro action suspension, etc. I  was having a serious back operation, had to learn how to walk again and wasn,t able to work for 6 months or so. I  broke my back in numerous places in 96 on a drill rig, I spent 100 grand on my back, after surgery 20 k indebt so the RM 125 had to go. Then I went trucking 48 states and Canada, with a tank co. hauling chocolate, veg. oil, etc., we ran 20 to 50 hrs. staight, Mainly Chicago to the east coast alot of hard miles. In 05 I bought a new left over 04 cr125, I go to pickup my maxi van that was parked at my Dads farm for 3 years. I didn,t know he reparked it in the back of the farm in 5 foot grass, it was junked. So now I just have a car, to ride 1 time in 05 I rent a pickup. I was lucky to live through that running hard in the truck,my best friend at that co. died in his truck in Carlisle PA. from extreme fatigue, yeah he worked himself to death. Spring forward to 2010, 1st ride of the year on a 06 cr125 I cracked my hip on a tractor tire without crashing, my back is screwed up also, constant nerve pain all the way down my leg into my foot, spent over 10 k trying to race and never made it to one. There,s alot more bad news, stuff that I can,t believe is happening, had a 3 tooth bridge pulled and a gold crown, infection into my jaw bone and blood stream,2 other teeth are crap.So I,m waiting for all my denture apointments to be down, it,s all from staying up 2 days trucking, sleep 3 hrs. and do it again. When my apointments are done,I have to get another driving job that will keep me out for 3 to6 months at a time, good thing I love America and truck driving.

When I was 12 I was planning on getting a new 1974 Honda Elsinore CR125M.  The only problem was there was none available.  But, a shiny new Honda Elsinore CR250M just happens to be sitting there...  so I went with the 250...  I rode the piss out of that bike, it was just plain fun.  Unfortunately, in 1975 is when MX bikes started to get "real" suspension.  Prior to the early 70's no-one neither cared, nor really paid attention to the suspenders, but now long travel was in.  Suspension changes were improving by leaps and bounds. This is when guys like Marty Smith was battling with Bob the Hurricane Hannah  I was able to hang on the MX track for a few years, but the long travel on the mid to late 70's made by baby obsolete.  Now I'm 16, and cars are more important, and of course girls...  So the bike got used less and less...  soon it was parked...
Fast forward 25 years...  My son is 14 and I agree to get him a bike. (TTR125)  I also get the Elsinore out of storage...  I kicked it 10 times, gas on, ignition switch off...  turn in the ignition switch, pull the choke, give her a healthy kick, and she fires even with 15 year old gas...  Now it runs but not well, gas is leaking out of the carb and of course all the pilot jets are clogged.  After tinkering, and a new air filter, replacement carb, and new exhaust pipe, she is in prime shape once again...  I ride it for a couple of years.  I would get the strangest looks, until I flew by them in the woods.  Then everyone wanted to check out the old Elsinore.  I did try to MX again, but with only 4 inches of suspension on modem tracks...  you get the picture...  I loved that bike, but longed for some modern suspension.  I did not want to modify the old Elsinore as it was still in original condition... (I still had the original partially dry rotted front tire on the bike).  I made the difficult decision to sell her as it was a sought after bike for vintage racing.  I had many calls on her, a lot of calls including several from the UK, while they tried to figure out the shipping and transportation logistics. Someone within a 45 min drive called and said I'm bringing cash...  if its what you say it is its sold...  I pulled it out of the garage, showed him the engine has not been started, pulled the choke, and she fired on the 2nd kick.  I took it around the house a few times to properly warm it up, and she stood there in all her glory, idling away...  He went around the house, and came back with a huge grin on his face...  OMG I forgot how much power these things have....He loaded her up, I signed the title (Yes I still had the title) and shed more than a tear as I watched her head on down the road.

As much as I hated to see it go, the old Elsinore funded my son's and my new (re-found) hobby of dirt bike riding. Because of the old Elsinore I was able to get back into bikes, and Iā??m not stopping until I canā??t go anymore.

Here is a picture I took just prior to selling her

If your nephew wants to go to a quad make sure its a 2 stroke or a 400ex, been there done that. What I would look at is a modern(03-10) yfz450 and put a banshee motor in http://www.yfzcentral.com/forum/13-images-other-media/62799-2-stroke-fans-you-like.html (http://www.yfzcentral.com/forum/13-images-other-media/62799-2-stroke-fans-you-like.html) which turns out to be super easy. You can find yfz's for incredible prices as well with blown motors ;D.  And as for selling the kx125 for the kdx, I say go for it. I would look into maybe a invert swap from a newer kx125.

Well it's a done deal. The bike was gone when I made that post yesterday. And trust me I don't even have it in my garage yet and I am already researching mods for it :-)

My Bike History (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziJoItOodYo#ws)

Since this video was made I actually got 2 more bikes, another 1983 Maico 490 and a 1986 Maico 500.

The 600 is gone. $2500 cash. :)
Now i need to find a new project.
A 84-85 YZ125 would do the trick i think  ;D
I will have to start looking.
The only problem i foresee is the prices they seem to go for  :o
The same era kx's & rm's seem to be cheaper down here so they might be a better bet.
Will see what comes up.
