2004/2005 Maico 500, WP Front/ Rieger Rear, Hydraulic Clutch, HGS Exhaust, I got it from the original owner. It was actually plated in Washington, but don't think I will renew the plates.  Seems in good shape, have to set it up or trails.  He threw in the 83 maico 490 sand spider engine on the table in the back of the photo as well.  The saturday before last decided I wanted to get a newer maico so I got one :)

Cool!
Do you want to sell the 1983 Maico 490 motor?

I heard the side plates and rear fender are yamaha (but hard to get the rear fender in Red w/o going thru koestler) and the tank and rad shrouds are KTM.  I need to find that out tho b/c I want to get an oversize tank!

I have another 490 engine I have rebuilt and all new bearings but never put it back together b/c it's a 4 speed.  Want to see if the transmission is good and a 5 speed from this engine and put the gears in that engine.

My bark busters should be here soon but I tried to get a CR500 spark arrestor and its on back order (Ithink a late model CR500 spark arrestor should work).  I need to put a skid plate also yet.  Will have videos of it tho but will be trail riding it, so no motocross 50 foot jump videos just like me putting around on a 82 maico 490, same thing just witha 2004 maico 500 in the picture :) The brakes work though, so that will be different.

I did take it for a ride today just a quick one down the street, its pretty fast and powerful.  Won't be able to take it for a real ride until the weekend after next provided I can get it setup by then.  Started draining and switching the fluids now, need to put skid plate on and bark busters.  Spark arrestor also.  And the hydraulic clutch needs mineral oil, so ordered some and hopefully will be able to set that up and hopefully doesn't need any seals replacing.  Also need to clean and adjust the floats since the carb is overflowing.  Bike hasn't been riding in over a year so need to make sure everything's good.  It's all original, but still has good compression.  Even so if not now will prob replace at least top end at the end of the year.  I'm sure after 6 years it prolly needs it.

It's certainly a pretty bike bits and pieces wise.Very KTM-ish.

She's a beauty! The Mahle pistons wear like iron and I doubt very much it needs replacement. ;D

Sachs is it correct Mahle & Wossner are made by the same company ?
Title: Re: My NEW Dirtbike!
Post by: SachsGS on January 27, 2011, 09:05:50 PM
Mahle is a massive company (they are now building complete multi cylinder powerplants) and may provide manufacturing services for Wossner (a small family run company) but it appears that the two companies are separate entities.

Hey Opfermann, you can get mineral oil at your local drugstore. That Rieger shock on your new Maico is THE most durable, longest lasting shock on the market.Take the plastic KTM waterpump impellor and use a slingshot to fire it over your neighbour's house.Get a metal replacement. My hydraulic clutch slave cylinder used to weep a bit and the clutch would creep so I installed a one size thicker o-ring.End of problem.Install grease fittings on all the rear linkage pivot points.Keep a close eye on the rear drive side wheel bearing. If that Keihin gives you problems stick a 40mm oval bore Bing on the 500.The power will be silky smooth. The design of the radiator shrouds and gastank was such that I didn't have to make rad guards for this bike.

Stick your new Maico on a stand and put your 83 Maico on a stand beside it.Notice the difference in footpeg locations. If you move the 04's footpegs down and forward to a location closer to the 83's,the new Maico will be more comfortable and even handle better. The power on the new Maicos is smooth to the point that it will fool you. You'll find very soon that you are going much faster then you thought and you may get into trouble.Call up Drew Smith and order a W.E.R. steering damper.

These newer Maicos come loaded with high end components and are very well made. You'll find that the bike requires less maintenance then your friends Japanese bikes and you'll spend a lot more time riding.Enjoy! ;D

Actually it got a TMX Minkuni on it.  Thanks for the hydrauilc clutch tip, I am wondering if it may be leaking and was wondering a good way to fix is std. seals are not optimal.

Unfortunately, this has the KTM slave cylinder for the clutch and not the Maico version. Ya the power seems smooth but quite dangerous with even a little bit of throttle and thats with it geared very high.

I have a spare throttle stop from a PW80 if you need one. ;)

SachsGS, Any reccomendation on an oversize tank?  Been looking through pictures and things to see if I can find one that fits closest.  Koestler said the tank is original Maico (not KTM or Yamaha) and it's only available in 1 size.  I am thinking that there must be some black KTM oversize or something that might fit or made to fit.  Have you any ideas, would be great to go to a shop and just try a bunch of tanks but I don't think that's possible and at $200+ a tank I def don't want to buy 10 tanks on order and see if they fit!

You may be out of luck.ATK was supposed to offer a larger tank but I'm not sure if they followed through on it.I made an aluminum tank for my Merkle 500,lots of work but it turned out well. :D

Seems that way, Clarke Manufacturing sent me this:

Quote
I am familiar with this bike and am positive we do not have anything remotely close to fitting it

Clarke mfg co.

And just gas tanks.com said maybe a XR650L tank may fit, but not so sure on that one.  Ya, definately don't want to go metal tank though cause I'd like to have something that won't dent if the bike falls.

With rad guards and shrouds the metal tank is pretty well protected.I have yet to dent the tank and that includes getting smoked by a kid on a KTM 520. :o

How did you get smoked by a KTM 520 on a Maico?

The 520 stands for cubic inches?  That would do it.

Another tank option for you to consider.Back when I had my first KTM they offered an aux tank that replaced your rear number plate. There was a company that sold them for jap bikes as I saw one in a mag on a Yamaha-so,if you have yamaha side panels,it's a possibility.

I have seen these ones:

My problem with those is that you can't slip off the back of the bike if you loop out!

The side number plate ones are a good option, but they make them all for the left side!  That's where my exhaust is, I need it for the right side
Title: Re: My NEW Dirtbike!
Post by: ford832 on February 07, 2011, 11:55:40 AM
Too bad.Maybe you can make a big curl in your exhaust like the new YZF450's and route it out the other side so you can use the plate tank. :D
The only issue I see with the front and rear fender mounts is that that's a lot of shifting weight carried high.
On the other hand,I once strapped two 2l coke bottles to the front plate of my SX on a long ride once. They looked almost factory TM ;D

I'm a fan of carrying a backpack with a couple of Gatorade bottles full of gas.  Just stop over at some point after you've burned some gas and pour them in the tank.  If you plan on doing a lot of falling down (which seems to be fairly popular for some reason) then this plan probably isn't for you.

Well we all don't just cruise around in formation on dirt roads, so that plan IS probably only good for you  :o   :D .

Again, if you plan on crashing on a regular basis, then the plan isn't going to work very well.  But even then, those bottles are tough as hell and don't leak unless they get put through serious abuse.  Honestly, if I fell hard enough to worry about the bottles of gas in my backpack, I'd be more worried about the fact that half of my limbs were disabled and my bike suddenly looks like the letter J.

Here is a typical plan I put together and post before the ride so everyone knows the script:

8:00am Leave Staging Area
8:15am Do Trail #55
9:00am Crash into oak tree
9:30am Do hill climb trail #56
9:50am Down logging road
10:00am Trail #33 Smokey the bear
10:15am Bob crash head on into other rider, breaks colar bone
10:30am Do trail #34 Black diamond
10:45am Fall over half way through trail
11:00am End and go regas at staging area
